DS school requiring masks on bus

DSBUSMASK · 26/09/2021 11:41

A few have been off at DSs (16) college with covid. In response the school are now saying that to travel in between lessons (the sixth form is a partnership between three schools) you must wear a mask on the bus. All three schools have always been very covid cautious but I am a bit annoyed about this. Partly it feels unfair that adults aren’t required to wear masks but teenagers are. Secondly they seem to have just decided this themselves with no input from above. Thirdly I was under the impression that we were just allowing covid to rip and these mitigation’s will only slow the spread and extend the pandemic. As well as that DS has been vaccinated and I find it irking that what was sold to him as a “ticket out” has proved to be no such thing. Obviously there isn’t much I can do but I’m a bit irritated. There isn’t any alternative so DS will have to comply although he finds them uncomfortable. Aibu to be annoyed.

Just get them to put the fucking mask on.

Remember it's not just a mask it's a 'fucking mask' and make sure you enjoy it.

HadEnoughOfBears · 26/09/2021 17:22

If he was in Scotland he'd be wearing it on the bus and all day at school.
The majority of them appear to be managing it.

Depplyaadhhegeg · 26/09/2021 20:42

Sends totally the wrong message schools NEED to be open NORMALLY. there is an effective vaccine available to all teachers we NEED schools to be open as normal even if this is “no big deal” it still sends the wrong message that things aren’t normal which they must be. We have a moral responsibility to ensure our kids have a NORMAL education.

Lou98 · 26/09/2021 20:48

Personally I do think YABU.

I personally don't like wearing a mask and it doesn't bother me if others don't but I have worn one since the start and will continue to while it's still required.
At the end of the day, it's not a major inconvenience. I also don't think he should have been led to believe that getting the vaccine was a ticket out of wearing one as that was never confirmed.

I'm in Scotland though and face masks are still mandatory everywhere, including public transport (unless exempt)

Megistotherium · 26/09/2021 20:57

They are trying to protect children from disrupted education. I really don't get parents wanting otherwise.

Silverswirl · 26/09/2021 20:57

I think it is a big deal. No one should be made to wear a bit of useless yet irritating cloth over their face now. It was always a big deal to me that my 11 year old had to wear a mask for 8 hours a day, couldn’t hear her teachers or friends properly or see anyone’s expression. Horrible way to spend your first year In secondary school after all the other stressful crap she went through trying to get used to a completely new experience.
How are the school going to be policing this? Is it a private bus?

🤣🤣 This is not just a mask… this is a fucking mask This is not just selfish… this is fucking selfish This is not just a jab.. this is a fucking jab

And trying to stop them catching covid so they can be in school will help that

  1. we are in a pandemic, and I think the kids are intelligent enough to have noticed that
  1. there's no such thing as "normal" in life, and it doesn't do anyone any harm to realise that
  1. masks keep infection down and they are a good idea

You’re only going to get schools open NORMALLY when children aren’t being infected. You’ll only get that when infection rates are far lower than they are now. Insisting on no mitigation at all will not get infection rates down.

And yes, things aren’t normal and you saying they must be doesn’t make it so. Your moral responsibility is to insist on much safer conditions in schools. But I guess that goes against whatever twaddle Us4Them are telling you to post this week.

I didn't see that on the label when I bought it Hmm

The effective vaccine available to teachers only works so far, at my school there are now double vaxxed staff off with Covid for a second time.

You're right there is an effective vaccine available to all teachers.

All but 2 at my school have taken it up.

It's been great at preventing serious illness and all have been able to return unaffected after their covid and isolation.

Unfortunately none are allowed in with covid so it still affects pupils education.

itsgettingwierd · 27/09/2021 04:25

And I'll add there have been 8 staff with covid and 6 pupils. 2 of the pupils have been very unwell and 1 hospitalised.

The children have been far worse affected than the jabbed adults Sad

My DD is the only Yr 6 who goes to wraparound so she has to sit in a room on her own before and after school. Maybe I should start a thread about how she’s being treated like a plague victim?

Well, yes maybe you should. That’s utterly horrible for her.

Starlightstarbright1 · 27/09/2021 04:37

Covid is ripping through mu ds's school. They have reintroduced masks in corridors. I am pleased. My ds has avoided it so far.

HungryHippo11 · 27/09/2021 05:02

@Againstmachine

I thought masks were still required on public transport?

Unless you are in London in most areas no not compulsory.

Even in London not everyone is wearing them. We went on the tube the other day and I would say mask about 50% of people were wearing masks, despite many signs saying they are required.
Orangejuicemarathoner · 27/09/2021 05:06

They just wear the mask, and stop creating such a fuss. Most people in the world are used to this now. No reason for your DS to be more special than the rest of the human population. The school is probably trying to stay open.

She loves it. She has been given the wii so feels special and can play ‘Just Dance’ to her heart’s content.

She also realises the rational behind this decision and wants to protect her school community.

Some people still harping on about masks? Here in Cyprus we have to wear masks every day, any time we are out of the house-kids are in masks all day at school and have been all through the hottest weather. The kids also have to have two rapid tests a week to prove they don't have covid, or are not allowed onto school property. We also have to show a safe pass in order to enter supermarkets, restaurants, in fact pretty much anywhere indoors!

Sounds sensible and safer than here

"Je finds them uncomfortably "

Not like the rest of us then. Hmm

Some people actually find COVID uncomfortable. Maybe the bus driver is worried he'd be one of them.
