DS school requiring masks on bus

DSBUSMASK · 26/09/2021 11:41

A few have been off at DSs (16) college with covid. In response the school are now saying that to travel in between lessons (the sixth form is a partnership between three schools) you must wear a mask on the bus. All three schools have always been very covid cautious but I am a bit annoyed about this. Partly it feels unfair that adults aren’t required to wear masks but teenagers are. Secondly they seem to have just decided this themselves with no input from above. Thirdly I was under the impression that we were just allowing covid to rip and these mitigation’s will only slow the spread and extend the pandemic. As well as that DS has been vaccinated and I find it irking that what was sold to him as a “ticket out” has proved to be no such thing. Obviously there isn’t much I can do but I’m a bit irritated. There isn’t any alternative so DS will have to comply although he finds them uncomfortable. Aibu to be annoyed.

YABU to all the above really, particularly, to the phrase "let it rip". The only reasonable thing I can see in your OP is that your son has been vaccinated.

I am finding the whole thing frustrating. I wore my mask on the Tube yesterday, it was hot and humid and uncomfortable, but I wore it because it's a requirement there. I'd say less than half were though, so is it a requirement or not?

However, an elderly man I know (early 70s and not at all frail) is just home from hospital after being admitted with Covid and breathing difficulties, despite having both jabs and someone else I know spent 2 weeks in ed despite both jabs, so I am a bit concerned about "letting it rip"

seb342 · 26/09/2021 12:57

Given that teenagers are all hanging around together outside of school with no masks the whole thing does seem pointless. My Dd school makes them wear masks on school transport, prior to getting on the bus they are all huddled together looking at things on each other's phones so I do wonder if it's just a useless token gesture from the education authorities.

santabetterwashhishands · 26/09/2021 12:57

I can't get worked up over a mask 🤷‍♀️
Wear it or don't use the transport simple👍🏻

motherrunner · 26/09/2021 12:59

My 10 year old is wearing a mask all day at school (from 7.30-5 as she goes to wraparound) as there have been 8 cases in her class.

I teach in a mask currently as we’ve reintroduced them because of the spiralling cases in my school.

No big deal.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 26/09/2021 13:00

A vaccination is more of a ticket to hopefully stay out of the hospital or worse...a morgue! It is more of a ticket in to hospital for the countless ill people who need hospitals for other illnesses other than covid who have not been able to get the medical care they need to live.

A mask, uncomfortable as it is, is also a ticket to keep a virus to yourself, rather than pass it to others.

We are still wearing masks on buses, just because I have 3 children in school. I would hate to pass the virus on to someone who could potentially die.

IMO YABU. Life atm is crap, it is scary for many who are CEV. Wearing a mask for an hour? Is it that much of a sacrifice?

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/09/2021 13:01

If there is a large outbreak schools are supposed to implement these measures so they haven't taken it upon themselves.

Absolutely. It’s in consultation with PHE.

My DD is the only Yr 6 who goes to wraparound so she has to sit in a room on her own before and after school. Maybe I should start a thread about how she’s being treated like a plague victim?

SpringheelJack · 26/09/2021 13:18

This isn't how it works. Covid isn't just magically over once everyone's had it once. The 'letting it rip' is because the damage of repeated lockdowns and restrictions is (arguably - I'm kind of on the fence) greater than the impact of the illness itself - and because it's here to stay regardless of how quickly or slowly it's spreading.

Personally I'd far rather my kid was uncomfortable in a mask than the school was closed because cases are raging unchecked.

CarrieBlue · 26/09/2021 13:35

Yes

YABU. VVVVVVVVVVV much so.

Kindertonguehappierlife · 26/09/2021 14:38

Oh diddums

sartorius · 26/09/2021 14:49

In Scotland masks are still mandatory on public transport, shops etc AND secondary children have to wear in class

Angel2702 · 26/09/2021 14:59

No different to using public transport we still have to wear masks on buses and tubes. Really not sure why you are so annoyed. It really isn’t a big ask at all.

MintJulia · 26/09/2021 15:07

Yabu. Masks on school bus have been compulsory & standard for more than a year here. The dcs no longer even notice. Ds prefers it on frosty days, it keeps his face warm Grin
It helps keep people safe. If you can't manage that level of consideration, take your dc to school separately.

Againstmachine · 26/09/2021 15:08

Mostly only in London.

This.

itsgettingwierd · 26/09/2021 15:36

We are back to masks everywhere except classrooms.

It's a safety measure.

No big deal 🤷‍♀️

gogohm · 26/09/2021 15:49

Yabu masks are being worn on buses still

JamieLeeBee · 26/09/2021 15:52

@QueenofKattegat

Its just another pointless covid theatre measure. For some reason it makes it look as though something is being done. People have bought into masks and so they can tick a box and say look, we're taking action, when they're just appeasing the permanently anxious.
Give over
DotBall · 26/09/2021 15:56

Just get them to put the fucking mask on.
Thankfully my school has gone back to masks in classrooms as covid is ripping through the school.

Sadly, I won’t be there to teach them for at least another week after my covid isolation as I’m struggling with fatigue and (bizarrely) dehydration which is fucking up my Crohns, I’m hoping the GP will suggest a couple of bags of fluid tomorrow to re-establish fluid balance as I’m fed up waking dehydrated and sick, despite 1l of ORS a day.🤮

herecomesthsun · 26/09/2021 15:56

YABU for thinking we are just going to "let covid rip"

Driftingblue · 26/09/2021 15:56

Masks required on the bus and all day at school here.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/09/2021 16:36

Surely your teenager wants to be public spirited and responsible. Of course they should wear masks on buses and any transport setting. I'm flabbergasted that you would think otherwise.
