DS school requiring masks on bus

A few have been off at DSs (16) college with covid. In response the school are now saying that to travel in between lessons (the sixth form is a partnership between three schools) you must wear a mask on the bus. All three schools have always been very covid cautious but I am a bit annoyed about this. Partly it feels unfair that adults aren’t required to wear masks but teenagers are. Secondly they seem to have just decided this themselves with no input from above. Thirdly I was under the impression that we were just allowing covid to rip and these mitigation’s will only slow the spread and extend the pandemic. As well as that DS has been vaccinated and I find it irking that what was sold to him as a “ticket out” has proved to be no such thing. Obviously there isn’t much I can do but I’m a bit irritated. There isn’t any alternative so DS will have to comply although he finds them uncomfortable. Aibu to be annoyed.

I've never met a single person who's said "Oh I can't wait to put my mask on, it's so comfortable".

Also, I've just heard from a 3rd person I know who has been double jabbed but has Covid.

I'd be inclined to be a bit more annoyed with myself, for not making it clear to him that his vaccination was never a "ticket out", before he made up his mind to have it.

Are you sure adults don't have to wear them if they're able? If so, that's something I'd be speaking to the school about.

Jeeez it's a mask, no harm done he should just wear the thing. People really do overthink these things. High covid levels = mask compliance, it's not a hard equation

I thought masks were still required on public transport? DS gets on a dedicated school mini bus and they have continued masks on the bus since they returned. I couldn't get upset about this.

Yes YABU to be annoyed, masks aren’t just about the wearer but protecting others. That’s why we have vaccines as well, to protect not only us but others. It wasn’t sold as a ticket out of anything.

Save your energy ,seriously, why get het up about something so minor that doesn't even affect you? Everyone wears masks on PT here ,no one likes wearing them but it's not a huge deal.

Yup, mine need masks on the bus.

Mine wore them through last year, even the one who was primary age and not required to wear a mask was asked to wear one on the bus.

Masks not required this academic year but we have now been asked for pupils to wear them in communal areas again. I don’t want my children to get Covid-19 or for for further lockdown, so I am encouraging mine to wear them again.

No one likes wearing a mask, but it’s better than the alternative.

Where we live masks are worn everywhere except in one's own home.
My teenage sons (bit older and younger than yours) have never complained and if they did they'd be told to get over themselves.

Masks are currently required on public transport. Both my DCs’ school require masks in corridors.

It's all theatre, like security at airports, its designed to make it look like something is being done.

Yep, completely agree. We really need to stop pandering the permanently anxious. Nothing except a full lockdown (which I suspect some of them loved) will never be enough for them.

Consider yourself lucky. Here in Cumbria we are already back to wearing masks all day, even in lessons and close contact isolations.

YANBU at all to be annoyed but as you say not much you can do about it 😞 (other than declare him exempt of course). Also you will not get a sympathetic response here, mumsnet is riddled with people who are obsessed with masks, believe that they are going to deliver us from the pandemic, and are totally unwilling to acknowledge that they cause any non-trivial inconvenience/ harm.

It's been a while since we've had a mask thread from an obvious name-changer to bring out people like this Honestly. You'd like to sit on a bus of maskless, potentially positive, coughing teenagers?

I don't think it is it? Where I live most 12+ are fully vaccinated and still wear masks all day at school, including on school buses. For my ds that means from 7:40am to 5pm every school day. I don't think anybody loves it but that's life right now, you make some sacrifices.

I meant to say, I don't think it is a big issue!

Masks being slowly reintroduced in the schools round here. Not DS but it won't be long. He's fine with it. I don't see it as a big deal but have been pretty compliant throughout. I see it as a small sacrifice in comparison with what we have all been through.

Just tell him to wear the mask - it can't be a long journey.
