They are an easy measure that are no real hardship and could help (even if just in a small way) suppress this virus surely we should just bring back our mask mandate now?

@CBroads

Sorry but why should everyone have to wear a mask because a couple of people are scared of leaving the house ? It's killing young people's best years! I am by no means anti mask but I am anti discrimination and that's all the mask mandate brings with it.
Exactly. Unless I absolutely have too, such as flying, but then you dint need tobif you're drinking 😉i certainly won't be wearing a flimsy face mask. If people still need these comfort blankets then that's fine by me, but please don't expect others to wear them as it makes you more comfortable
CBroads · 15/09/2021 14:56

@severusvape

Sounds like mandating it would be beneficial. Some have said they’ll switch to online shopping which is great, shops will be quieter so less spread. They have a direct and indirect benefit.
Yeah good idea, why don't we kill the economy more than it already is? The highstreets are already dying, bringing masks back will only speed this up. You want to wear one, do it. I don't want to wear one so I won't be.
Bobholll · 15/09/2021 14:56

Masks clearly don’t work very well. Have you seen the cases in Scotland?! Proper, hospital grade ones do but not the pieces of cloth the general public do..

Whammyyammy · 15/09/2021 14:56
@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr all the autistic people I know (and I care/clean for one autistic adult), wear masks! The world is right or wrong to many autistic people and the one I care for said he doesn’t want to die so will wear a mask.

The groups of bodybuilding men I see going around shops with sunflower lanyards makes me laugh the most- I’m sure they’re not victims of dv! But maybe they have anxiety Hmm
Or they have an ebay account....

Shops being quieter isn't a positive. The high street is struggling and quiet shops leads to more being shut down. Not great for the economy

Yes the world is very right or wrong to many autistic people. It is to me, I'm a rule follower, so much so that I was hitting myself in the head and scratching my arms till they bled as I tried to cope with the sensory overload and ensuing meltdown from wearing one.
Thankfully I was given "permission" to stop trying by a very nice pharmacist, who told me to take the mask off and start wearing my lanyard (funnily enough I already had a lanyard for situations where I am likely to go in to overload).

I can't say this often enough, but if you know one autistic person, then you know one autistic person. We are all different and we all have our own struggles and triumphs, just like nt people.

Bizawit · 15/09/2021 15:01

no real hardship

Do you have no understanding/ appreciation of the function/ value / importance of the human face??

You are free to wear a mask as much and as often as you wish, but , for the love of god , please, please, pleAse stop advocating that everybody should be forced to do so by mandate of the government. This is not Saudi Arabia.

Or someone who posts antivax nonsense on a parents' website for fun?"

We are talking about masks at the moment, not the vaccines. Just for your clarification.

Peteycat · 15/09/2021 15:03

"Doesn't mean they should be used indiscriminately, but trying to claim they're ineffective completely devalues your argument."

I never once said they were ineffective, I said they don't have the impact you think.

I'm glad that the autistic people you know are able to wear masks. However, as I'm sure you know, this doesn't mean that all autistic people can. Many with TN find masks a boon, because breezes can trigger an attack - however many with TN cannot tolerate even the lightest touch to their face. Like most things, it's not one size fits all.

As for your comment about 'bodybuilding men' - why are you sure they're not victims of DV? Or SA? Or have TN? Or are autistic? It amazes me that people still have an idea of how disabled people/victims of abuse 'should' look. What's troubling is that you're a carer and still hold these ignorant views.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 15/09/2021 15:10

Exactly!

IcedPurple · 15/09/2021 15:21

@Tal45

I have no idea why we got rid of wearing them at all, it's such an easy thing.
We didn't 'get rid' of wearing them. Everyone is absolutely free to continue wearing them, and businesses and other venues are free to demand visitors wear them. It's just no longer a legal requirement.

The fact that so many have stopped wearing them when given the choice would suggest it's not 'such an easy thing'.

MercyBooth · 15/09/2021 15:23

@Elphame I agree. I dont feel like trying to live a longer life if thats the way we are going.

Thewiseoneincognito · 15/09/2021 15:27

You’re right OP, I hope they do bring back the mandate ASAP, acting too late will be disastrous for us all. The governments piss poor communication that masks were not necessary and a personal choice gave the false impression that it was safe to do away with them.

I have been for a walk around my city centre this afternoon and I’d say possibly 80% had no face mask on in the shops, a wide mix of ages too which disappoints me even more. Seeing elderly people without a mask blows my mind, the same goes for obese people who don’t look particularly fit and healthy to begin with, do they have any idea of the risk they are taking?

ChristmasCurry · 15/09/2021 15:35

Just another pointless exercise - half the people wearing them had them under their noise or just had a useless bit of cloth.

Seems to have had little effect in Scotland who are still wearing them but cases are still rising.

I do wear one in the shops but no where else now.

Bizawit · 15/09/2021 15:40

Maybe they have different values and priorities and perceptions of risk to you? Maybe there isn’t only one way of looking at this situation? What a radical thought it that? Where oh where did this toxic arrogance and paternalism come from? Wind your neck in- you have no business judging the ‘risks’ other people take with their health, no matter how old or fat you think they are Hmm.

Whatever9999 · 15/09/2021 15:44

As for your comment about 'bodybuilding men' - why are you sure they're not victims of DV? Or SA? Or have TN? Or are autistic?

So true, I'm not a man, but thanks to strength training and exercise (which is one of my autistic hyperfocus) I look extremely fit and well built. The was many with autism have a tendency to hyperfocus and the fact that bodybuilding/strength training takes a lot of dedication means the 2 meld quite well.
Under most circumstances no-one would look at me and automatically know I'm autistic (unless I'm in overload/meltdown), or that I suffered years of horrific dv (another reason I've focused on getting so strong is that no-one is going to do that to me again). Or that I've suffered any of the traumas I have in my life.

Most people would see an, admittedly short, muscular woman, who trains hard, runs a lot and punches pretty hard. I have actually had the "but you don't look autistic/disabled" comments on many, many occasions.

Oooh the judgement simply oozes out of this post, doesn't it?

Maybe they've recently recovered from covid and are double jabbed so aren't particularly worried. Maybe they've assessed their own risk and decided that, since masks are no longer mandatory, they do not wish to wear one. Maybe they're exempt.

Maybe it's none of your business.

Thewiseoneincognito · 15/09/2021 15:51

@KurtWilde since when has expressing genuine concern about people’s risk to health been pompous and judgmental? If that’s the case so be it, I don’t want to see them get ill or hospitalised, I am doing everything I can to make sure I don’t put them at risk so my conscience is clear.

@Bizawit see I disagree with you there because I am wearing a mask to protect THEM so THEY don’t get sick. See my point? It’s not toxic arrogance, if you believe that you’re deluded.

Just more toxic arrogance and paternalism. Did they ask you to do that? I bet if you confronted them with that statement , they’d tell you in that case you were very free to take off your mask.

gardeninggirl68 · 15/09/2021 15:55

No I won't go back to wearing them

Work is so much more comfortable now

It's not up to you to question their choices on masks etc. Its actually none of your business.

@Bizawit is not deluded, they are rational.

Thewiseoneincognito · 15/09/2021 15:58

@Bizawit I don’t understand why you’re getting defensive about my comment because you’ll be one of the ones whinging and moaning when we have to lock down to protect the elderly and vulnerable again and it’s infuriating to see how careless some of those most at risk have now become. It’s not through ignorance but because they’ve been falsely led to believe they’re safe.

I have noticed lately that on some threads, the same people are constantly displaying this wierd behaviour. They absolutely slam me for disagreeing with them.i cannot actually believe that people like this actually exist, who think it's OK to judge and police other peoples decisions.
