They are an easy measure that are no real hardship and could help (even if just in a small way) suppress this virus surely we should just bring back our mask mandate now?

No, but going out in larger groups with friends happens.

@Stuffin

I think that is the key with personal choice. It's accepting what you are comfortable with but not forcing your choice on others. And before anyone says but by not wearing a mask you are forcing it on others I refer back to the choice of not going out, doing online shopping etc like I did when masks were forced on me.

Some people are masking, only meeting outside, testing every couple of days etc. This is not for me but I couldn't give a damn if someone wants to do that.

Personally I don't care if and when I get covid as I want to live my life without restrictions but I don't bear hug strangers and if someone doesn't want to meet or be close then I have no issues with that as long as they don't call for everyone to live a restricted life because of their anxiety around covid.

One thing that really puzzles me is it has been said many times that the most common types of mask in use protect other people rather than the wearer.

Have they said why this is the case? When breathing in the mask would be pulled tighter to the face and most of the air would pass through the mask and when breathing out the opposite would occur with the force of the air pushing away from the face and allowing the air to pass around the sides.

Oh it was clearly trying to make a point that some of us didn't have masks on when we 'should have'
Right. I've twice in the last week had absolute nobs have a go at me about my mask, (in London) once on the Overground and once on a bus. Haven't seen anyone do the same about those not wearing masks. What does that prove? Fuck all, as while it's true, it's just anecdote.

I think it proves that there are nobs that wear masks and nobs that don’t

I also think that's badly said, but the justification is all about asymptomatic transmission ( I reckon ). Transmission happens when one person in the vicinity has covid, but doesn't know it.

People with symptoms & known infection must isolate. So basically, the idea of masking is to pre-emptively stop the asymptomatic from passing covid on. They already have covid, so aren't being protected by their own mask wearing.

If you without covid wear a mask & the person who already has covid wears a mask, in theory germs less likely to go between you.

I suspect that just the 'receiver' wearing a mask is a little bit protective, but the maximum protection happens to the receiver when both receiver & origin person wear masks.

This is certainly true!

At least if you’re wearing a mask you can tell the nobs they are nobs without them being able to hear exactly what you are saying.

I have to examine my motives here. Do I want to keep masks because I think they're a decent part of a set of mitigation's? Or is it because I love being able to quietly mouth swear words at those who are pissing me off?

Both may be true.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 19/09/2021 09:34

When ds2 had his summer job in the pub he kept his mask on when everyone else got rid of theirs

He just didn’t want to smile at customers 😀

(He’s a bit paranoid he has a weird smile)

@KurtWilde

I'm not an anti-masker, I wore one as and when required and still caught covid. But I do think the chances of getting the bulk of the population to wear masks again are slim. Especially those who are double jabbed as many of them now seem to think they're bulletproof.
Exactly what anti maskers think
