Masks one month on

So tomorrow it will be one month since restrictions were dropped in England.

How have you noticed masks changing where you are?

It seems very varied here. Almost everyone the other night in Sainsburys was wearing one even though it wasn't too busy and it's a big store. But M&S food opposite was busy and hardly anyone had one on, even though it's quite a small and cramped store.

I think it seems to have levelled off here there was a gradual decline but it's probably about half and half now on average.

M&S most.
Sainsburys most.
Shops 50% ish.
Amusement arcades - hardly anyone.
Local cafe - only me today!

frozendaisy · 18/08/2021 18:55

We wear around shops.
Went to a football match couple of weeks back didn't wear, neither did almost whole rest of stadium.

Couldn't put a percentage on it anywhere not looking really.

Parker231 · 18/08/2021 19:00

Central London - most still wearing them in the supermarkets. Little change from when the regulations changed. Some of our local shops have signs that mask wearing is still required in order to shop there.

MarcelineMissouri · 18/08/2021 19:03

West Midlands here and definitely less and less people wearing them. I’ve also been interested to note that I’ve been in to more and more places where staff aren’t wearing them either. Eg I took the kids bowling a couple of weeks ago and all staff still had them on. Went again today and none did.

I still make sure I have one tucked in a pocket somewhere for places that obviously prefer you to wear one but I am definitely happy not to be wearing one much anymore!

Overthebow · 18/08/2021 19:05

Can’t say I’ve really noticed, it’s not on my radar anymore to worry about.

Mindymomo · 18/08/2021 19:06

I must admit it was nice to be able to pop into local shop as I didn’t have a mask, whereas before I wouldn’t have been able to. The shop owner was behind a screen so I didn’t think it posed any threat to him. I have found in supermarkets, it’s those in pairs aren’t wearing masks, but almost all those on their own are still wearing one.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/08/2021 19:47

Definitely gently declining thank goodness, and it's getting easier to go places and look around making face contact with people.

Having recently ventured back to a greater range of shops following a year's absence, I'm noticing the additional background noise of the increased ventilation and it's a right bloody pain trying to hear staff through masks and perspex over all the noise. Probably not helped by being deconditioned to processing background noise too.
Lip reading is so underrated.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 18/08/2021 20:15

Tesco about 50/50
Sainsbury’s about the same
Co-op about 25% wearing them including all staff
Local Indian restaurant, no one upon entering or leaving including the staff
Local chicken shop , all staff only one out of 5 of us wearing them
Costa , only one member of staff , no customers

Bobholll · 18/08/2021 20:18

Really dropped here! I’m in Yorkshire & I’d say it’s like 20% are and 80% are not. It’s been slowly going down & down. I must confess I don’t often wear mine now so I’m in the 80% category. It’s not so much I disagree with masks, I just forget to grab it. I always did but when I faced a fine, I’d go back & get it. Now I don’t!

Bobholll · 18/08/2021 20:19

Oh & also, shop workers here are not wearing them at all. Supermarkets, cafes, softplay - all totally gone!

CatherineMorland · 18/08/2021 20:24

Most people still wearing them here thank goodness.

I can’t understand the complete and utter rank selfishness of those who refuse to put up with a slight inconvenience in order to keep others safe.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 18/08/2021 20:25

I have to say, it's been wonderful being able to hear people properly again/see their mouths when they're talking. I knew my hearing wasn't all it could be pre-pandemic but I didn't realise how bad it was until everyone was wearing masks. Muffled voices made for so many embarrassing moments and I was surprised how much I rely on lip reading/expressions, too.

Againstmachine · 18/08/2021 20:30

Oh do give up, you do you, I wore when I was law but now I'm selfish, if I was that selfish I wouldn't have even done that.

Overthebow · 18/08/2021 20:44

It's not selfish. It's not mandatory anymore, you cant decide what others prioritise or not. Covid just isn't on many people's radar anymore, there are no mandatory restrictions.
MRex · 18/08/2021 20:45

100% in the pharmacy, 90% on train / bus / tube, 75% in the supermarket, 50% other shops, 10% pub / restaurant, 0% in child play centre. Give or take, obviously.

I'm happy to drop them in optional places; anyone highly concerned about transmission is not going to child play centres, pubs nor restaurants. It was only ever pantomime in pubs and restaurants anyway; wearing a mask to go to a table and take it off, so I'm delighted to see the staff and customers have dropped the masks.

It still drives me nuts when people wear masks on their chins inside anywhere. I sort of get it for going between shops or the overground train platform, even though it's ignorant to wipe whatever particles it's caught over your own face, but I'm really getting to the point of feeling violent to see chin warmers inside. Just Wear It Properly Or Take It Off!

NannyAndJohn · 18/08/2021 20:45

Not going out here, but friends have been saying that compliance has been steadily decreasing. Tesco friends reporting lower levels of mask wearing than Waitrose friends.

DS had to take a train journey a couple of weeks ago, no SD at all and about half the carriage unmasked.

gardeninggirl68 · 18/08/2021 20:52

i work in non food retail. massively reduced our stores

i dont bother anymore either

itsgettingwierd · 18/08/2021 21:04

Mask wearing in supermarket still pretty high here.

Been into town today and some wore masks, some families didn't.
I don't care what people do re masks but I do think it's pretty arrogant of them to be walking against the one way system that's still in place.

However one thing I've noticed is how quiet the shopping centre still is considering it's school holidays. And how many stores seem to have permanently shut.

Usually there is groups of teens around and frequenting shakeaway and costa and mc ds and browsing b and m.

I don't know if they aren't coming or are turning up and being turfed out!

CatherineMorland · 18/08/2021 21:08

@Overthebow
It’s not mandatory but it is advised. Sadly too few people give a flying fuck about others: selfishness personified.

Current guidelines:

“We expect and recommend that members of the public continue to wear face coverings in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet. For example, on public transport.”

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 18/08/2021 21:09

It's still required to wear them on public transport here in London, but it's never been enforced. In Sainsbury's most people wear them. Ours is massive. I wear mine and keep away from people who don't wear them in shops as my DS is very ill and still not allowed to leave his flat except in a taxi.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 18/08/2021 21:10

@BIWI

I live in SW London *@torchh*! Lots of mask-wearing still evident here. Plenty on the tram and tube too. Big Sainsbury's near here, majority of shoppers still wearing them.
Wonder if it's my Sainsbury's.....
Topttumps · 18/08/2021 21:11

On holiday in South West and very low numbers wearing them. Not just visitors but staff too.
A little disappointed tbh.

lljkk · 18/08/2021 21:15

How have you noticed masks changing where you are?

No change in last month except among staff I suppose... 85-90%+ masked of customers indoors & maybe 20% outdoors. Market towns & villages East Anglia. Staff are maybe 5-10% masked. People sometimes wear masks at swimming pool, maybe 80% of customers on public transport (but lots of drivers don't). Taxi drivers are masked.

Ihaveaquestion77 · 18/08/2021 21:19

I feel like I've seen a gradual decline over the past month. For the first few days nothing changed. Now I think there are significantly fewer people wearing masks.

olivethegreat · 18/08/2021 21:26

On trains here going into London from SE I and most others don't wear them as they re not crowded, which has been a lovely relief. I put one on when ticket inspector comes so I don't breathe directly on them . Would wear on tube but have just been walking everywhere . Museum recently most wearing them, another crowded indoor London attraction, literally no one wearing them or SD, which quite surprised me. I think they're almost gone.
