Masks one month on

So tomorrow it will be one month since restrictions were dropped in England.

How have you noticed masks changing where you are?

It seems very varied here. Almost everyone the other night in Sainsburys was wearing one even though it wasn't too busy and it's a big store. But M&S food opposite was busy and hardly anyone had one on, even though it's quite a small and cramped store.

I think it seems to have levelled off here there was a gradual decline but it's probably about half and half now on average.

Supermarkets seem to have people wearing them. More people without in the shopping centre.

However I think the balance is still more people wearing them than not wearing them.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 18/08/2021 16:41

Varied here, too. Hardly anyone wears one on buses, but there's no 'trend' at all in shops. Sometimes I go into my local M&S/Sainsbury's/Waitrose/Aldi and 98% are masked up, sometimes I go in and 98% aren't.

What's interesting is that cases haven't risen in the month they've been optional (I'm absolutely not an anti masker, but I can't help noticing!).

wendz86 · 18/08/2021 16:45

Most people still seem to wear them in trains/supermarket but less in other venues like pubs/restaurants etc but seeing as you spend most your time drinking/eating you wouldn't be wearing one much anyway.

Here in SW, no one is wearing them. None at soft play, none in clothes shops, maybe a few in food shops.

What a relief! And I'm so happy the case rate hasn't suggested that masks did a single thing!

Definitely a big drop here in N Yorks
I don’t use trains or buses so can’t comment

It’s great to see I must admit as I struggled to hear muffled speech

2boysand1princess · 18/08/2021 16:53

Slightly more still wearing them in my area. Probably 60%.

Have just come back from the SW - Bristol to be precise - and everywhere we went there were signs asking people to please continue wearing masks. Many places still also asking us to check in with the app.
Buzzinwithbez · 18/08/2021 17:05

About 50 50 here but I agree more in supermarkets and less for a day out type shopping.

Some businesses have signs up asking to please still wear masks. They're smaller businesses so I get it, but it makes it impossible to support them if you've come into the city without one, so the chains win.

Bargebill19 · 18/08/2021 17:09

Very few people wearing them in shops. Work has said they should be worn or face disciplinary. But no one wears them - most noticeably it’s the management who don’t wear them at all, despite it being them who have made the rule.

torchh · 18/08/2021 17:10

@BIWI I meant SW London, whoops

AuntieMarys · 18/08/2021 17:12

I'm.not wearing one....I don't notice what others are doing. And I don't use public transport so just shops, restaurants, bars, cafes

BIWI · 18/08/2021 17:13

I live in SW London @torchh! Lots of mask-wearing still evident here. Plenty on the tram and tube too. Big Sainsbury's near here, majority of shoppers still wearing them.

lightand · 18/08/2021 17:18

I think the biggest majority of people, are sheep.
Tourists dont seem to wear them much, so I think the locals have followed suit.
However, cases are quite high. But people dont seem to be putting the masks back on.

ParadiseLaundry · 18/08/2021 17:20

As soon as the restrictions relaxed it seemed like most people were still wearing them.

Most people seem not to be wearing them now in my experience. Except on buses where I am and it's about 70/30 wearing them.

In Homebase the other day everyone had one on bizarrely, even though it's a massive store and was very quiet to SD was easy to maintain.

Most people walk in to a shop them remove it when they see others not wearing one.

Knittingupastorm · 18/08/2021 17:23

Continuing decline here, DH went to Asda at lunch and said basically no one was wearing one.

effiehabb · 18/08/2021 17:25

We've been splitting the summer holidays between Gloucestershire and Dorset, mask wearers are definitely reducing in numbers in both touristy areas. My DD has a summer Saturday job and she's now the only member of staff still wearing one in a local busy garden centre. Personally, I'm thrilled at the end of masks.

8dpwoah · 18/08/2021 17:28

Still good in the supermarkets here across the board when I've had to go in (and that's from Lidl through to M&S so isn't down to demographic I don't think). However I was pretty much the only person wearing one in a packed farm park/soft play attraction yesterday which reaffirmed my plans to avoid them as much as possible (double jabbed but 7 months pregnant so keen to avoid!)

MeadowHay · 18/08/2021 17:29

Gradual continual slow decline that I've seen here in my NW city, but still more people wearing them than not, in general. And generally a stark age divide with over 40s much more likely to wear them than younger people. Virtually no staff anywhere wear them, it's just the customers. I noticed when we were away in a town in the East Mids recently it seemed a lot less people wore them there, probably only about a quarter of the people we saw. But we were only there for a few days so could have just been coincidence and not representative I suppose.

Boombadoom · 18/08/2021 17:43

Hit and Miss. I wear one everywhere. I find some shops people will, others they won’t. Circus last night, they asked everyone to wear them, I’d say 99% didnt.

East Midlands here and I'd say I'm seeing about 50 50 in my town but certainly a big drop since the start. And no pattern, it's not old vs young as it seemed to be at the start.

I was in big Northern city the other day and very few wearing them in the main shopping area , even going in and out of shops. But probably same as you, I was only visiting for a short while so I don't know what it's like all round.

Woolver23 · 18/08/2021 17:47

Half / half here in London I would say.
Even on public transport where they're still supposed to be compulsory.
Half / half in the House of Commons too: only a couple of MP's on the Tory benches wearing them which I think is awful - it flies completely in the face of official advice which is to wear them in crowded indoor settings - and almost all of the oppositipn benches opposite masked up as they should be.

usernotfound0000 · 18/08/2021 18:27

Definitely noticing less masks than a month ago. Supermarket is still quite high but more like 70/30 rather than 90/10 as it was. Can't say I've noticed many masks in other places. We visited London at the weekend and other than on the tube, we didn't see masks anywhere, and even on the tube it was about 60/40 in masks.

HalzTangz · 18/08/2021 18:48

For first 2 weeks everyone was wearing them, now, other than the workplace (no choice their) I'm not seeing anyone wearing them
