Masks one month on

So tomorrow it will be one month since restrictions were dropped in England.

How have you noticed masks changing where you are?

It seems very varied here. Almost everyone the other night in Sainsburys was wearing one even though it wasn't too busy and it's a big store. But M&S food opposite was busy and hardly anyone had one on, even though it's quite a small and cramped store.

I think it seems to have levelled off here there was a gradual decline but it's probably about half and half now on average.

Seeing 50/50. I dont wear one. Seen a few local shops that insist you wear one, so just shop elsewhere

Whammyyammy · 19/08/2021 15:28

@CatherineMorland

Most people still wearing them here thank goodness.

I can’t understand the complete and utter rank selfishness of those who refuse to put up with a slight inconvenience in order to keep others safe.

Selfishness 🤣🤣🤣

Perhaps it just reflects how many vulnerable people you have in your circle of friends and family and how many you lost? If you live somewhere where there is a more elderly population I would imagine you are likely to put more effort (not that it’s exactly onerous) into protecting them if you can.

newnortherner111 · 19/08/2021 17:31

Everyone I have seen on public transport without one is under 40.

I don't know, my parents live in a place with a large elderly population and all throughout the panademic (and also now with mask wearing) they seem to be the ones who are sticking to the rules less. I think they have a bit more of a what will be will be attitude. My mum was surprised just how few masks the elderly were wearing when she's been shopping.

But where I live it's a more spread population and i'd say it's actually quite varied across all age ranges.

All during lockdown, I found that the elderly didn't change their ways and still went out shopping on Saturdays like they always did , at peak times even though they had all week. It works both ways about protecting themselves/yourself.

thriftyhen · 19/08/2021 19:28

Rural SW and here pretty much everyone is still wearing one. I can't see any difference from when it was enforced. Perhaps we're all a bit more risk averse out in the sticks!

MarshaBradyo · 19/08/2021 19:30

In Sainsbury’s today everyone wearing one still - London

Arcminute · 19/08/2021 19:40

@5zeds

I've only come across one local shop that demands you wear a mask and many people I've spoken to have stopped shopping there because of it. i think the majority of people prefer masks in shops that I know and would actively avoid shops which didn’t encourage it. Here people wear masks watching their kids swimming lessons and everywhere inside really.
I’ve been to a swimming pool in a town in SW England today, lots of lessons going on, no one wearing masks. I don’t think you can generalise. I live in the London suburbs and there is much more mask wearing there than where I am today - this isn’t a sticks/city thing, though I can see some people want to make some sort of implication that people in different types of area are more/less “selfish”
VaguelyInteresting · 19/08/2021 19:46

Interesting.

I’d say 30% wearing them where I am. I’ve noticed that young people (late teens mid twenties) of both genders seem to be keeping them on- enough, as a demographic, that I’d noticed. Same with parents with very young kids.

Againstmachine · 19/08/2021 19:58

It's hard to say actual demographics of people wearing as well as due to nature of the site, regularly people decide that is young men even though there is many young women as well.

5zeds · 19/08/2021 20:02

I’m sorry I wasn’t trying to say townies were not wearing masks and rural areas were. I was just surprised because a previous poster said she was in the SW and nobody was wearing them and that’s not my experience. I don’t mind wearing one if it helps and I think it probably does.

Opposite here. The best Chinese take-away in our town (we have several) has a very simple “no mask, no entry” sign on their door (one of their daughters is CEV).
It’s amazing how many people who “can’t” wear a mask suddenly can when they want to enjoy a good meal.

TattyDevine · 19/08/2021 21:21

Probably about 60% here on the Suffolk Essex border in supermarkets

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/08/2021 23:08

(Suffolk/Essex border: are you in Manningtree? Such a lovely little town)

GreenTortoise · 19/08/2021 23:13

@torchh

Here in SW, no one is wearing them. None at soft play, none in clothes shops, maybe a few in food shops.

What a relief! And I'm so happy the case rate hasn't suggested that masks did a single thing!

Oh dear.

almost eliminated!!

FakingMemories · 20/08/2021 01:01

Stopped wearing masks in May. From Monday they are mandatory here again after three months without. I’m not doing it.

shewalkslikerihanna · 20/08/2021 22:39

Lovely seeing staff in home bargains york maskless
Lovely atmosphere
Felt like pre covid times

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/08/2021 23:08

Interesting. Staff in HB here (small, NW, coastal town) all wearing masks, notices asking customers to do so and hand/basket sanitizer at entry.

boon · 20/08/2021 23:11

We are in a Premier Inn tonight off the M5. Not one person wearing a mask, even the staff seated all customers in one area of the restaurant instead of spacing out, when half the restaurant was empty Looks like the pandemic is over here!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 20/08/2021 23:12

I hadn't noticed much difference until yesterday when I popped into the corner shop and nobody in there apart from myself and the young cashier were wearing a mask.

Again, interesting. We were in a PI in mid-Wales 10 days ago and in Suffolk, 5. Greeted at both by one way system and sanitizer, screen at reception and receptionist in mask. Required to wear masks in public spaces and in restaurant when not seated. All staff in restaurant wearing masks, empty tables between guests and no shared salt /pepper etc.

Willyoujustbequiet · 21/08/2021 01:34

Virtually everyone still wearing them here in Northumberland
