Has anyone else had shingles shortly after getting vaccinated?

Basically I feel too young and vibrant to have shingles, so I am desperately seeking any explanation other than me being middle aged.

I had my second vaccine a few weeks ago, and now I have a mild but uncomfortable case of shingles. I haven't found much connection online, but since my shingles aren't being reported anywhere (as the GP says not related), I am wondering if I am alone or are there possibly others?

interesting

i'm just looking up shingles as i have weird symptoms did you have astra zeneca?

Wolfiefan · 05/07/2021 18:50

I know someone who has what they describe as awful painful hives. I wondered if it was shingles.

WednesdayIsPurple · 05/07/2021 18:52

Is it definitely shingles and not herpes simplex?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/07/2021 18:52

Yes, AZ and no side effects.

Then last Tuesday one side of my face felt scorched and painful to touch, then on Saturday the painful rash came in.

It's not terrible, but since it came out of nowhere I can't help wondering.

There was a thread on here about a woman with the most awful shingles and if I remember correctly, she feels like there's a link with the vaccine. I'll see if I can find it and link.

Definitely shingles, according to the pharmacist, then GP, then ophthalmologist. Apparently it is not unusual to curve around the eye (nice).

Anyone of any age can get shingles. Children can get shingles.

SorrySoldOut · 05/07/2021 18:56

mine is on torso above the hip. i've got the pain and a headache. not much in the way of a rash though, not yet anyway. had this for almost a week

had 2nd AZ dose few weeks ago with no side effects. I'm going to pharmacy tomorrow

Vassos Alexander, the super fit sports commentator on the Virgin Radio Breakfast Show with Chris Evans, has just had shingles too and I'm assuming (due to his age) his second jab. He runs marathons for fun, open water swims etc etc, so perhaps you're on to something with the jab being a trigger?

Tumbleweed101 · 05/07/2021 19:00

A colleague got shingles after first vaccine

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 05/07/2021 19:04

DM did (after her second dose).

Nyancat · 05/07/2021 19:06

I don't know of anyone who has got it after the vaccine but I do know of a lot of people who have had it in the past year, some post covid and others, like myself, who had it after being a bit under the weather and wondering if it might have been asymptomatic covid first then shingles.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/07/2021 19:10

Wow DonLewis, I'm relieved mine aren't nearly as extreme as that poster's.

I know you can get them at any age but I feel you are unlucky to get them young. Although being in my mid 40s I'm probably shouldn't be that surprised.

In fairness it has been a stressful and draining year and we are probably all a bit depleted. Plus wfh may have impaired our immune systems by not challenging them with the usual bugs.

Can you not report it yourself on the yellow card scheme
SorrySoldOut · 05/07/2021 19:28

i've got a call with doc booked tomorrow

i'm 52, NEVER ill and also run marathons!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/07/2021 19:28

Well I could but the GP seemed confident (and my research here seems to confirm) it's just a coincidence.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 05/07/2021 19:29

But it might be connected. Without reports you might not see a link

SorrySoldOut · 05/07/2021 19:29

had my grandchildren here overnight, i hope they haven't caught anything....not contagious i hope

dementedpixie · 05/07/2021 19:30

You can pass on chicken pox from shingles but only with contact from fluid from the blisters

BarbarianMum · 05/07/2021 19:34

My BiL had them the week before. Shingles just happen sometimes.

Legoandloldolls · 05/07/2021 19:34

I had bells palsey after AZ. They kept on talking about the shingles virus weakening up.so who knows? I reported it via Yellow card.

Maybe it was a coincidence or maybe it wasn't. I reported it anyway
