The picture says it all. We have kindly shared it with Spain.

It's kind of global you know love

Well done!

Bloomsbury45 · 02/07/2021 09:56

Actually Europe does want UK holidaymakers - just ones who are fully vaccinated and have a negative test. That strikes me as entirely reasonable.

What is not reasonable is Merkel imposing 14 days house arrest on fully vaccinated people travelling to Germany from UK with a negative test.

Her attempt to persuade other EU countries to follow suit has been rejected as other EU leaders see it as disproportionate.

Yeah, it's called a pandemic for a reason. Confused
Honey12346 · 02/07/2021 11:27

Breaking news viruses spread no matter what nonsense rules people follow. News at 11

worktrip · 02/07/2021 11:43

It is because we are seeing the spread of Delta. Unless Europe can race ahead of the virus with vaccination, they will have the same issues too. The Kent (alpha) variant did the same thing

I don't think we "gave" it to Spain, they kinda already had it...

WaltzingBetty · 02/07/2021 11:49

How exactly do you propose to stop the spread of variants indefinitely @VaccineSticker ?

I'm pretty sure the WHO and all governments would love to know your solution to the pandemic

Aposterhasnoname · 02/07/2021 11:50

Lol at OP thinking the Delta variant is only in the uk.

Bless your innocent little heart

loubylou1010 · 02/07/2021 11:54

I think this is the dumbest thread I've ever seen!

RedToothBrush · 02/07/2021 11:54

I have sympathy for Merkel.

She's right to want to try and slow down Delta to get people vaccinated before it hits the EU. The UK is much further ahead on this than many EU states.

What it won't do is stop Delta - and even Merkel is well aware of this. But a lot of Brits seem to misunderstand this (some deliberately).

Merkel is also out of step with the desire of many EU countries to get British tourists back. There are a number of countries who will just ignore Merkel and the EU isn't likely to be able to intervene on this (cos sovereignty).

What it might do is discourage some Germans (and other nationalities) not to go to places Brits are. But thats about it tbh.

But this stories generates losts of anti-German hostility so why put it into realistic context when it could drive advertising venue from clickbait???

Quartz2208 · 02/07/2021 11:55

How have we given it to Spain. Spain is still on the amber list for us and travel is not allowed.

Majorca had an outbreak of students as well that were not from the UK

Delta variant is everywhere it is just (and understandably so given our links with India) we got it first

Here is the US (which is closed to UK travel) response

www.cnbc.com/2021/07/01/delta-white-house-to-deploy-response-teams-across-us-to-combat-covid-variant.html

And it is in 96 countries. We were just the frontrunners here both with it and in vaccines

Seesawmummadaw · 02/07/2021 11:55

Are you okay op?

BogRollBOGOF · 02/07/2021 11:59

And did we spread it to that ever-popular holiday destination Russia?

Even Australia, hallowed home of Zero Covid is having to up its game to keep Delta out of the general population.

Bloomsbury45 · 02/07/2021 12:19

What it might do is discourage some Germans (and other nationalities) not to go to places Brits are. But thats about it tbh

Merkel could very easily stop unvaccinated Germans travelling abroad this summer. This would do a lot to slow the spread of Delta. She has chosen not to do so because it would go down like a lead balloon with the elctorate, and there is an election coming up in September.

Instead she is focussing her efforts on trying to prevent vaccinated Brits travelling - and at the same time trying to open up travel corridors to the US for vaccinated travellers, despite the presence of Delta there.

This approach does not hold water from a public health perspective. But it plays well politically.

Her own decision last week to turn down a second dose of AstraZeneca in favour of Moderna has also increased vaccine hesitancy among many Germans.

I'm sure there is a report out there somewhere detailing how we singlehandedly finished off the dinosaurs.

Chloemol · 02/07/2021 12:54

I think you will find it’s not us that have shared it, travellers from all over still go to Europe.

As to Merkel, Deltas already in Germany and spreading fast, and unlikely to have come from England

But thanks for sharing the pretty map

Bordois · 02/07/2021 12:58

Well, we are the only nationality that ever travels outside its borders, so its probably true!

Yep a very deep violet colour for my area! Couldn't care less atm!
Ylvamoon · 02/07/2021 13:06

Let's have an update in a few weeks time...

I bet you, green will be boring and out, while the red and purple will be full on trend!

Hax · 02/07/2021 13:11

We only appear to have more / be a front runner because we actually do vastly more genomic sequencing than any other country.
