No legal compulsion to wear face masks once restrictions are lifted

Sky News reporting this morning that George Eustice has said with the removal of restrictions on July 19th will also come the removal of legal requirements to wear face coverings. I’m torn on how I feel about this.

@Sparklingbrook

I have mixed feelings about the science re masks. I mean if someone coughed or sneezed in my face /close to me I would feel better about it if I had a mask on.
Yes and if you coughed or sneezed most of the phlegm wouls sat in your mask rather than end up on your friend's face...
Bitofachinwag · 24/06/2021 20:52

WOULD STAY not wouls sat

Poorlykitten · 24/06/2021 20:55

Dr. Wouldbegood is in the house! 😂

WouldBeGood · 24/06/2021 20:56

Here to help!

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2021 20:56

Yes @Bitofachinwag it's hard to argue that it would be preferable for the other person for you not to have a mask on and cough/sneeze in their direction.
People argue that 'nobody's ever sneezed/coughed in my face' but there are certain jobs where unfortunately it happens.

I have a close elderly family member who cannot be vaccinated. I saw them inside at the weekend with teenage dc and they asked for us not to wear masks . We did a LFT beforehand. It is so difficult but I don't think that the entire of society can carry on mask wearing and social distancing. I think it is crucial that we all get vaccinated to protect the vulnerable and that is definitely the key. Masks were an emergency measure and vaccinations now mean we don't need to keep the emergency measures as we have other tools - the pandemic is not over, but our response to it does not now need to include masks and SD except in health care settings.

Baileysforchristmas · 24/06/2021 21:07

@Thewiseoneincognito you can’t keep trying to guilt trip people into wearing masks, you keep wearing yours if you want, I’ve already gone maskless, it’s a wonderful feeling of freedom.

Jacobdrums · 24/06/2021 21:35

I've stopped wearing them on open air railway platforms even though strictly speaking you're supposed to. If the carriage is fairly empty then I don't wear it on the train either on a hot day as it's really uncomfortable. I do on the tube because you can't distance. I wear in shops etc but if it's really stuffy or hot and the shop is large and not crowded I pull it down past my nose and/or have breaks from wearing it.

In medical settings I wear a proper disposable mask and follow all the guidelines as there are more likely to be vulnerable people who don't have a choice about being there.

Amazing how a piece of cloth winds people up so much.

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/06/2021 21:38

The gov will end up following in Israel’s footsteps and will quickly reverse the no legal compulsion once it becomes clear we need them if we are to make any lasting progress...

WouldBeGood · 24/06/2021 21:49

It’s funny how people are so invested in a piece of cloth as the panacea for a virus 🤷🏻‍♀️

WouldBeGood · 24/06/2021 21:50

Why bother with vaccines? Merely swathe your face in a bit of fabric!

Rhayader · 24/06/2021 22:08

I’m looking forward to them being gone but I might still wear them on the tube in winter and I feel like it will probably be at least a little bit socially acceptable.

I get norovirus from the tube every year and I can’t keep down water for 2 days every time. Hopefully I can avoid that!

Rhayader · 24/06/2021 22:09

Probably worth adding that I wear medical grade n95 masks!

Maze76 · 24/06/2021 22:16

I’m happy that we now have the freedom of choice. I’m choosing to continue wearing masks in public, but that could change.

eastegg · 24/06/2021 23:16

Muzzle is a crap description. A muzzle is put on an animal to prevent it biting. Absolutely nothing like a bit of cloth. You could give someone a nasty bite through a mask if you wanted to.

The reason people say muzzle is to fit the 'they're controlling us for the sake of it' bollocks narrative. If people want to make that argument fine, go ahead and make it, but using the word muzzle for something that clearly isn't is just silly.

namesnamesnamesnames · 24/06/2021 23:17

Oh I do so hope so.

namesnamesnamesnames · 24/06/2021 23:19

I might have to start buying nice head bands or something though to fill my pretty mask buying gap.

XenoBitch · 24/06/2021 23:19

I can't wait to see the end of them. I am exempt, but have had nurses visit me daily recently, and it is so hard to hold a conversation with someone when I can't see most of their face. One lady recently was wheezing and sweating... I said to take it off, I don't mind. She said she was not allowed.

catswhiskers89 · 24/06/2021 23:35

Hope so. Can't stand them and don't believe they offer any protection. Only wore one to be polite..

CindyRella18 · 24/06/2021 23:45

Only the n95 masks offer real protection.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 24/06/2021 23:46

I think the reason muzzles has stuck is due to a meme early in April 2020 of a dog talking to another asking 'why are all these people wearing muzzles? Because they couldn't sit and stay' it then filtered down? Also the question of what would we see if they were dropped (this is only from a personal scientific perspective) is no difference. We have no control subjects so everything is based on assumptions and comparisons! Most places that have dropped them are now only testing those that are actually in need of medical assistance. If we had dropped them on 21st June and had this increase it would have been blamed on that. As we haven't we are being told we'll if we had it would have been worse! There is firmly no actual scientific irl proof that they do anything to stop serious illness or death. They are a bit of theatre at the least and were brought in to try and coax the frightened back into public at the best. Do they actually stop the spread of a virus? No, do they remind us to still be aware? Yes. That's pretty much it!

I think muzzle is apt, in that it implies that whatever is behind it is harmful and must be covered up. We have pretty much been led to believe that we are all carrying Covid and are spreading it all the time.

@Thewiseoneincognito

I’m curious to know, How does everyone think giving up face masks will help us keep infections down considering today’s latest 16k positive cases? Are we just hoping it will go away on its own? Especially with autumn and winter not that far away it’s not exactly creating the ideal conditions to lower transmission and cases.

Also what about visiting your elderly relatives, yes they may be double jabbed but the risk is still there for them, going about our daily lives without precautions just doesn’t seem logical. Am I the only one who thinks this? I realise I’m probably asking the wrong demographic on this thread but it’s a genuine concern and I’m wondering if anyone shares it.

Yes and my CEV adult DS1. I'd like to be able to visit him before he dies.
LightasaBreeze · 25/06/2021 06:17

I will put mine in the loft where the other unneeded stuff is, they can reside with my poor suitcases, I wonder which will come back out first....
