No legal compulsion to wear face masks once restrictions are lifted

Sky News reporting this morning that George Eustice has said with the removal of restrictions on July 19th will also come the removal of legal requirements to wear face coverings. I’m torn on how I feel about this.

Will continue to wear one in packed indoor places. L

EleanorOlephantisjustfine · 24/06/2021 10:40

This is a disaster. It means we’ll have to stop mouthing “fuck off” at people.

Flowerlane · 24/06/2021 10:40

The sooner the better.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 24/06/2021 10:46

@NannyAndJohn

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

And let's see what happens with Delta+ before assuming that everything will open up, shall we?

Here we go... Grin

Personally, I cannot wait. Though I have pretty much ditched mine already.

Girlmama3 · 24/06/2021 10:50

I’m pregnant so will keep wearing one while in shops etc.

Each to their own. If you don’t want to wear one, don’t. If you do, do. I hope people don’t get judged for wearing them after July .

DipSwimSwoosh · 24/06/2021 10:52

Oh please let this be true!!!

NannyAndJohn · 24/06/2021 10:55

@ApplesinmyPocket

While numbers are rising, I'll continue to wear one. Obviously no-one likes the things but, you know, pandemic.

Those who brag (there are some) about not wearing them (not talking about the forgetters/the exempt) and delighting in seeing other people bucking the rules, you must accept that those of us who are wearing them are keeping YOU a bit safer, while you're not bothered about US, right?

Oh no wait I forgot - you think people wearing masks have no effect whatever on the spread of infection don't you. Hmm

Yep.

They are the reason that cases are rising and will continue to rise.

SupermanInk · 24/06/2021 10:56

My child’s school have just reintroduced them in classrooms, due to cases in school and local area. The kids don’t mind, lots had continued with them in the classroom anyway.

Girlmama3 · 24/06/2021 10:56

It will be interesting to see what hospitals etc do with regards to wearing them.

Ostara212 · 24/06/2021 10:57

I don't dare get my hopes up but had to post in case it's a test balloon

If anyone in government is monitoring - end the mask mandate!

knittingaddict · 24/06/2021 11:00

@FindingMeno

If the scientists say its ok then that's fine by me because I know fuck all about viruses.
Is it scientists driving this though or popular opinion? Genuine question, by the way because the government has done lots of things that weren't scientifically valid during the pandemic. Keeping borders open to India for instance.
knittingaddict · 24/06/2021 11:03

@Lucidas

The thing is that this largely protects people around you and not you personally. It offers some protection to the wearer, but it's mostly for others, not you. Does this mean that vulnerable people and those who can't have the vaccine will have to stop going to places?
Mrgrinch · 24/06/2021 11:05

I'll be tossing mine in the air, like a year 11 student tossing their tie on their last day.

(And then of course picking them up and properly disposing of them)

This.

My grand child's primary school class has just been sent home for the first time because a child has tested positive. Cases are rising massively and we've some way to go before adults are fully protected. It doesn't feel like the right time to remove masks.

Don't get me wrong I hate the things. I'm post menopausal and wear glasses and I end up overheated and unable to see properly. Masks are a major pain in the bum, but I can still see the need for them.

CathyorClaire · 24/06/2021 11:09

Happy to see them go but on the flip side I haven't had a cold since January 2020.

I don't believe the two are unrelated and I'm not looking forward to that first little scratch in the throat that tells me ten days of misery are thundering down the track headed straight at me.

ifonly4 · 24/06/2021 11:09

Work in a pharmacy. My immediate colleagues will continue to wear them when store open, as many come in with colds, coughs and at the weekend someone left the paperwork from a PCR test in the healthcare section. Behind the scenes I think we'll drop them as we know we've all been vaccinated.

FindingMeno · 24/06/2021 11:09

@knittingaddict fair point, and I just rely on voices of dissent among the scientists being reported on, and trying to weigh it all up.
If I'm doubtful as to whether the move is political or scientific, I will err on the side of caution and wear a mask where I think I'd feel happier.

Cyberpixie · 24/06/2021 11:15

I have a military grade n99 mask. It protects me as well as others. I'd still wear it indoors such as when workers are inside my home. I'm having a load of work done soon that's been put off since March last year.

I'm vulnerable but double jabbed. It makes me feel better to wear it.

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/06/2021 11:16

So with just under a month to go and infection rates on the rise fairly significantly they are going to remove legal requirement for face masks 🤣 and you all believe this guy?

I would guess from the Environment Secs comments he’s a secret anti masker and probably one of the Covid skeptics using his moment in the spotlight to stir public opinion in such a way the government are going to need to squirm their way out of Freedom day.

Egg on their faces doesn’t come close! Don’t get your hopes up folks.

Overthebow · 24/06/2021 11:18

Great can’t wait. Things like mask wearing should never be law. It should be a choice what to wear on your own face

Itsokthanks · 24/06/2021 11:19

Good.

Overthebow · 24/06/2021 11:20

Does this mean that vulnerable people and those who can't have the vaccine will have to stop going to places?

@knittingaddict they will have the same choice to avoid crowded places or not as every person vulnerable to other viruses have always had. Up to individuals what they do in their own lives.

Viviennemary · 24/06/2021 11:20

Good. I won't be wearing one. I wonder if supermarkets will be allowed to set their own rules.

Jazzy1814 · 24/06/2021 11:22

I would love it if this happed, like many here I can’t wait to see the back of them but I doubt it’ll actually happen and even if it does I’m sure a few weeks later they’ll tell us to put them back on again.

ilovesooty · 24/06/2021 11:27

@Sparklingbrook

Why do people call them muzzles? It’s just a face mask.
Probably think it's edgy and witty.
