Thanks @Oldtimer2020 ! This is the kind of thing I need to hear!
Thank you @MRex too for being a voice of reason

TheChineseChicken · 18/07/2021 09:28

@MRex I always feel like you’re a grown up who knows what you’re talking about so it reassures me when you post positive things. In reality I don’t know who you are and you could be taking out your arse Grin. I hope not though

Firefly2021 · 18/07/2021 09:48

I honestly don’t know what I’d do without this thread. I’m feeling much less optimistic in the last week as I’ve got pulled into the scary headlines in the news and the doom threads on here… I logically know that it’s all happening as “planned” but panic still kicks in with “what ifs”

Especially as my business is currently in the toilet and I have two primary school kids. Thank you to all that take the time to offer hope through analysis of the data and common sense opinions of the batsh*t media coverage.

I’m definitely happy to continue to be cautious, still wear a mask, test when needed etc but I need to step the heck away from the news atm

Bordois · 18/07/2021 09:56

@LivinLaVidaLoki

God I'm getting sick to death of all the headlines about further lockdown coming.

Why can we not just take the good we have or that is coming why is it always always tainted.

We were told by whitty at the briefing cases would rise and hospitalisation would go up but the nhs would be able to cope. That deaths would inevitably increase....so why are people acting like this is brand new information, unprecedented and a reason to postpone EVERYTHING! I don't get it. I really really really don't.

Same here - it's so tiring seeing the same posts over and over again that end up escalating into all kinds of doomsday scenarios. Even the news that vulnerable kids are going to be offered a jab is being received negatively because others kids aren't getting it.

Ha. I like to read lots of the detailed research papers and post links, but please ask for a link if you want to rely on something I say. I will have read a paper somewhere, I just don't always have the link immediately to hand.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/07/2021 10:46

Flowers Mrex!

I am finding it impossible to take comfort in the news so I am focusing on the good non-covid things that are happening. Luckily as we aren’t in suspended animation any more there’s plenty.

www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2021/06/novavax-now-best-covid-19-vaccine/619276/

Thought this was interesting. Not sure when Novavax due to get approval in the UK, but it’s suggested as it uses more traditional technology, there are fewer side effects. Wondering if this is the vaccine the government is waiting to approve for the kids?

I think we all need a little reminder that there are good things going on in the background, that are only reported on from time to time…

PomRuns · 18/07/2021 15:47

So many thanks to @MRex @Bordois and all the other posters who kindly take the time to post positive news 🍷

Ps where is truely?

MRex · 18/07/2021 16:12

Has everyone already seen this; inhaled vaccine success for University of Iowa: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/07/210708135321.htm.
US funding plus very low side effects expected because it uses PIV 5, which is like a cold. It's not available yet, but a realistic prospect for next year.

TeenMinusTests · 18/07/2021 17:26

Placemarking for good news.

MRex · 18/07/2021 17:28

Cases are down a bit today, a little more than the usual Sunday drop. Could be one of those things, or could be good news. The lower rate is fairly evenly spread across England.

Bordois · 18/07/2021 17:39

We are 7 days post euros so is it likely that most of the cases from then have come through now?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 18/07/2021 19:16

Just 10 days until I go see my family. Been out shopping for summer clothes and sun cream and the usual stuff and had a nice lunch out. But I still can't quite get excited. After the whole France fiasco this weekend. I feel like any optimism I had is gone.

Malakaaaaaas!

Bordois · 18/07/2021 19:30

I know exactly what you mean about the optimism disappearing, but things can change so much in 10 days. 🤞🏖🤞

We have 19 days til we go.

6 for me ! Tho will be 7 til I see them :). I even went mad and bout the pcr to fly back to the Uk! I’m starting to risk it :). Got it from qured. 66£ for 2 fly to uk lfts. There is a video explaining how to do it. Mind you I’ve done a test every day this weekend as I’ve got hayfever quite badly but thought I’d do one just in case … so qured don’t have to tell me how to do pcrs … I know it by now :)
carolinesbaby · 18/07/2021 21:51

I need good news as the gov have u-turned on their u-turn and now returnees from France have to quarantine after all, so we're not going.

PomRuns · 19/07/2021 06:52

Most people on the train this morning are wearing masks, so good to see people being considerate.

I work in a supermarket that is not insisting on masks and I would say 90% of customers and staff are still wearing them.

Sorry to hear that. This might not count as good news but might make you feel better that she’s getting her just desserts: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-57883692
TheChineseChicken · 19/07/2021 07:16

DCD’s school and the music group that I take DS to haven’t even sent comms re easing of restrictions so they’re obviously expecting people to carry on as before ie wearing a mask, distancing. What an anticlimax, hey? Safe safe, friends

MRex · 19/07/2021 07:36

@TheChineseChicken - but if they cancel her visa, she'll come back to the UK. That's not good news, that's awful.

Ah, true. Australia can keep her

twinmum86 · 19/07/2021 08:25

My good news is I managed to move my 2nd jab forward by another week so it's booked for bang on 8 weeks now Smile

DH got the train this morning and said it's not too busy and mask wearing a plenty still.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/07/2021 09:18

It’s a bit crap of the school to not even let you know what they’re doing. Our secondary is carrying on as before as there’s only a week of term left and it would be too disruptive to change anything now, which seems reasonable. But then the headmaster is a very sensible and competent sort of chap.

I am in Costa and the QR codes have gone and there are a few more tables but not full capacity and everyone is politely masking as before. This gives me hope- ditch the pointless bits but still be careful seems to be a good approach.
