@wendz86 and yet just this afternoon Hong Kong has banned all visitors from the UK from entering due to us now being deemed ‘extremely high risk’.
Could you please go and be negative somewhere else? Please?

Thewiseoneincognito · 28/06/2021 16:10

@Reachersloveinterest it’s not being negative it’s a fact sorry.

im with @Reachersloveinterest since when being restricted from a country is good news?

The best thing to do would be to ignore the doom mongers who for some reason have decided to start descending on this thread.

Don’t feed the trolls ☺️

@wendz86

Just seen this on bbc:

Encouraging data means loosening of restrictions remains on the cards

Nick Triggle

Health Correspondent

There’s lots of talk about encouraging data. But with infection levels climbing rapidly how can that be?

The key is in the picture emerging with hospital cases and deaths. When the initial delay to step four was announced, infection rates had just started rising and government scientists were worried about what that could lead to with the vaccination programme not fully rolled out.

The past few weeks have provided clarity about what we can expect. The answer can be found by comparing the start of the second wave in the autumn with what is happening now.

During September and October cases were rising much as they are now. Within eight weeks that had translated to more than 1,000 admissions a day. This time round there are just above 200.

There is even better news with deaths. Latest estimates show fewer than one in 1,000 infections is leading to a death. At the peak of the winter wave it was one in 60.

This has dramatically altered what can be considered a proportionate response to the virus – and is why a further loosening of restrictions remains on the cards.

Great news @wendz86
Cafeaulait27 · 28/06/2021 16:37

Only 3 deaths today. I know there’s always a weekend lag but that’s crazy low!

fadingfast · 28/06/2021 16:59

I have two pieces of good news to share Smile

One is the good results from the mix and match vaccines study:
news.sky.com/story/covid-19-mix-and-match-jabs-study-finds-combination-of-oxford-and-pfizer-vaccines-creates-robust-immune-response-12344108

The other is about the long lasting protection from the mRNA vaccines (possibly no boosters required): mobile.twitter.com/nytimes/status/1409477942330150914

Whatever9999 · 28/06/2021 17:01

Numbers admitted to hospital are starting to well and truly flatten from 40%+ increase a few weeks ago to 10%.

Plus the effects of the vaccine are starting to become very obvious. At the same point in the increase due to alpha, the 9th December there were :

16500 cases (7 day average right now is about the same)

1753 admitted to hospital (227 admitted 24th June)
16331 in hospital (1505 on 24th june)
1242 on ventilation (257 on 25th june)
441 deaths (553 reported on 9th December), (18/21 on 24th june)

Whatever9999 · 28/06/2021 17:03

Just to add,
There is probably more mixing right now than was happening on 9th December, which means that these numbers are even more impressive

Bordois · 28/06/2021 17:10

Actuals vs predicted hospital stats by Warwick modelling.

I've been struggling a lot recently and (most of) the posts on this thread have really helped me not to spiral too much. Thanks everyone for a wonderful thread sharing only good news if I want negativeity I can look on a billion other threads on MN

I was really scared of Warwick when it was first spoken about as seen we were going to go on the wrong way (or maybe I was reading the interpretation of some people that I shouldn’t have read). But I’m liking these ones! Really good to see we’re still below the expected value !

TheChineseChicken · 28/06/2021 17:17

Thanks for the excellent data updates

Let's be fair about this
We are high risk at the moment. Rates are increasing and we have the delta wave
That might impact international travel for a little while
BUT ! Despite all that we are still able to see we can look forwards and all the stats from today are really uplifting
So thank you all

Wherediditgo · 28/06/2021 18:28

The vaccines!
Thank science for the vaccines!
They’re working Smile

amicissimma · 28/06/2021 20:42

Could there be any other reason for HK being unwilling to welcome visitors from the UK? Such as over 1million people possible moving here from there?

amicissimma · 28/06/2021 20:47

OTOH, according to Our World in Data, the UK has well below average rates of positivity.

If other countries were doing the equivalent of 1.2 million daily tests per 67 million population (eg 27 June), the results might be quite interesting.

Cafeaulait27 · 28/06/2021 20:54

I definitely agree that the HK thing is political

I loved this - just brilliant.

DH gets his 2nd dose this week.

I hope we get more positive travel news soon.

Brilliant isn't it. With the help of Bordois the Warwick predictions are now making us all feel better. Who would have thought ❤

Well done Bordois ❤
