Why all the fuss?

@Dustyboots

Because it's affecting even people who have been vaccinated

But it’s just like a bad cold ...

You are just trying to wind people up surely?

0.7% of those double vaccinated will, on current data, end up in hospital.

If just 10m contracted Delta, that 70,000 admissions, 1/3rd of the NHS bed capacity but its worse because they all have to be isolated.

UK is at 35 in europe on hospital beds at 2.5 per 1000 population, France has 6 per 1000, Germany is at 8 per 1000 !

Because most will have mild symptoms won't help us.

JassyRadlett · 14/06/2021 18:27

PHE says it’s around 80% more likely to result in hospitalisation.

But it’s just like a bad cold

No, and you know that. The majority of symptoms are now closer to a bad cold than eg a chest infection. That doesn’t reduce the risk of serious illness in a (large, and increasing with the number of cases) minority.

FriendlyBiscuit · 14/06/2021 18:31

@Dustyboots

The answer is in the article - more transmissible and more likely to need hospital treatment.

The article says it’s more transmissible but not that it’s more likely to need hospital treatment.

Tell that to the people in India

To scare everyone and delay reopening the country?

FinallyHere · 14/06/2021 18:34

I've got a bad cold. Just tried to see if I could get a PCR test. It said no

@hedgehogger1

Where are you asking?

I have been reporting using the Zoe app. Reported a cold and got an email back within 24 hrs providing the answers I needed to provide in order to qualify fir a swab test.

I could have gone to a drive through or walk through centre, decided instead to be sent the tests. They arrived within another 24hrs. I understand the results are expected back within another 24hrs.

I was a bit surprised (and actually a bit worried) by how seriously they take it. Quite reassuring to read here that symptoms of a cold are possibly a sign

Confused well apart from the ones who get more sick.

You know this, you're just asking out of mischief.

If you don't know, that's embarrassing.

TheSquigglething · 14/06/2021 18:36

Because, @Dustyboots, as I'm sure you well know, the fuss is related only very loosely to a virus now. We're into psychological warfare, and an increasing number of people - thankfully - now knows it.

hedgehogger1 · 14/06/2021 18:37

@FinallyHere just on the online system. It still asks if you've got the main three only. I've got the symptom tracker app so just put it in there. Will see what if at says

ClarisseMcClellan · 14/06/2021 18:37

What do you mean it said no?

If you want a test just tick that you have symptoms

There's no shortage, no one cares, I thought everyone knew that by now

They are the initial symptoms.
Sadly, as it stands, those symptoms can and do worsen, for too many people and can lead to hospitalisation and death.

If it was just like a cold and stopped at just being like a cold then it wouldn't be an issue.

Order a lateral flow then
Unsure33 · 14/06/2021 18:42

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

🙂 it’s frustrating isn’t it .

ineedaholidaynow · 14/06/2021 18:45

Don't use a lateral flow test if you have possible symptoms. Just say you have a cough and order a PCR test, don't think they are in short supply anymore

newnortherner111 · 14/06/2021 18:46

The fuss is that twice or more as many people have the Delta variant because the Prime Minister yet again did not act quickly enough over travel from India.

Not even on time to read his prepared speech tonight.

CirqueDeMorgue · 14/06/2021 18:47

Very brave of you to compare covid to another virus on here.

Cornettoninja · 14/06/2021 18:49

@Sadsiblingatsea

To scare everyone and delay reopening the country?
Because….?

I can concede that’s a possibility but it’s not very probable is it? Especially as we seem to lack a motive for this.

cptartapp · 14/06/2021 18:51

It was nothing like a cold if the three people in our house who tested positive last week is anything to go by. Two teens and one double vaccinated 49 year old.

madroid · 14/06/2021 18:51

@hedgehogger1

Go to your local test centre. Everyone can now have a test even if they have no symptoms. One in three people have no symptoms who test positive.
EverNapping · 14/06/2021 18:52

Have you heard of India? It won't take too much to overwhelm the NHS.

madroid · 14/06/2021 18:53

@Sadsiblingatsea

To scare everyone and delay reopening the country?
And why do you think the Govt wants to scare people? What do they achieve by that?
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 14/06/2021 18:54

It's not 'just like a cold'. Some of the symptoms are just like a cold. Some people will only experience it like a cold. Others will die.

I suspect that I had the Delta variant - all the symptoms of a nasty cold - and then I lost my sense of smell and had a positive test.

I had had my first jab, and I still ended up in hospital, because my oxygen saturation dropped to 88%, and wouldn't come up, so we called NHS direct, who sent the paramedics, and I was taken to hospital.

I was on oxygen, and for several days, I could only maintain a half way decent oxygen saturation if I was on oxygen. I did finally manage saturations around the 95% mark on room air, and was sent home, but I’ve now been at home for a fortnight, and I am still breathless on exertion - by which I mean that walking down the hall to the loo and back makes me breathless, and going upstairs or coming down makes me very breathless. I’m also really tired all the time.

I have had “just a cold” many times in the past, and I have never needed hospitalisation, not have I ever had long lasting symptoms like this afterwards.

Oh, and I still have very little sense of taste or smell.

This is NOT “just a cold” - it can be a nasty illness, and needs to be taken seriously.

Scrambledcustard · 14/06/2021 18:58

Yes I agree with this.

I'm surprised at this paper allowing this article. Despite the NHS saying that the virus isn't behaving as it was now we are vaccinated some people are still adamant this virus is rampaging the UK killing people. It isn't any more.

Yes people have died with covid that were vaccinated but the NHS have been clear those people had severe comorbidities. Its about time the press started to back peddle after scaring the nation to death.

Boris is now being swayed by public opinion and polls rather than actual statistics.

MareofBeasttown · 14/06/2021 19:01

The OP knows very well it is not like a cold.
