Covid rates rising again - anecdotal evidence

Tulipomania · 06/06/2021 07:24

Rates seem to be clearly on the increase among the young and unvaccinated.
Having not heard of anyone I know having it for several months, last week I heard of two cases in my network, one in the Northwest and one in London (both fine, but positive).
Other experiences?

For the last few weeks all the posts in this forum were about vaccines. Interesting how many now mention positive tests….

laselvar · 09/06/2021 18:57

My friend has tested positive. Most likely caught from her husband, a secondary teacher. The secondary school now have 9 cases in children (and rising). London.

IGetOver · 09/06/2021 19:02

My sons teacher and 2 class mates have just tested positive, apparently my ds does not need to isolate as he sits at the back of the class…

SuperMonkeys · 09/06/2021 19:13

The only people I have met to have had it were around Christmas time. They weren't very ill at all. We have only had one case at school, and that was October I think, and that didn't result in any bubble closures etc

Squidlydoo · 09/06/2021 19:15

We have sent home quite a large number of students this week after 4 positive cases in one class. PHE won’t let us close the class until we get 5 confirmed cases - which seems a little backward! Each day this week we have had new confirmed cases in this particular class’s We are a low covid area and have only had a handful of covid cases in the pandemic

Timeturnerplease · 09/06/2021 22:52

Two children in my daughter’s nursery bubble sent home today with fever and vomiting. I overheard the manager asking the parents to get a PCR test and let her know the results. Keeping my fingers crossed that it’s just a nursery bug.

ThornAmongstRoses · 10/06/2021 06:36

I am a nurse and work in a paediatric department. Since the height of the Covid stuff starting last March, up until Christmas time (so over 9 months) we saw about three patients with Covid. One was completely asymptomatic and was in for another reason entire whereas the other two were admitted due to be breathing difficulties and then Covid was diagnosed via their swabs.

However, last week we had two infants admitted on the same day, both quite poorly with high fevers, breathing difficulties and and needing oxygen support and the swab results came back positive for them both. One was 18 months and one was 9 months.

We have also seen over the last month or so more teenagers being admitted with potential PIMS related illnesses.

It’a put us a little on edge.

Tulipomania · 10/06/2021 13:36

gosh, hope all those who's families are testing positive get through it ok.

That is ridiculous.

My sister’s son was sent home from school last week and he was off for three days. He went back at the start of this week and today he got sent home again.

It’s madness.

Longtalljosie · 10/06/2021 21:27

^LFTs are only for people without symptoms, that's the point of them.

If you have symptoms you need a PCR test. I'm a little surprised that message still hasn't got through to everyone^

And yet…

Fairly certain my teenage son has got it, just waiting for results. The pub where he works has had to close due to so many staff having tested positive and another pub in the next village has had to close.

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 11/06/2021 09:45
@ExpulsoCorona - when you say “some are using lateral flow tests despite having symptoms” - do you mean that once you’re symptomatic the lateral flows are unhelpful? Because that would explain a thing or two about a recent outbreak I dealt with in my workplace
LFTs should only be used if asymptomatic.
PCR if have symptoms.

Hope everyone’s ok Flowers

I live in a high rate area (North of England). It seems to have been the first wave when I knew quite a few people who had it, some sadly died and a friend (50s) ended up in ICU but is thankfully OK now. Another friend was tested (positive) because she worked in a care home. She was the first case I knew (March 2020). My doctor told me I had it and to isolate (April) and that it was very prevalent in my neighbourhood. This was in April 2020 and so everyone was strictly following the lockdown at the time anyway. Our GP practice was really good and seemed to be very on the ball because they took seriously loss of taste and smell when this was not an official symptom, but was being suggested in research and medical journals.

I know about 5 people who had it in November and December and then the about the same number in January 2021. I only know of one person tested positive recently but this is a friend of a friend

anothernamereally · 11/06/2021 11:45

Dd has it (17) so we are all isolating- her lft tests we're all negative- taking 2 other dc for pcr today, suspect they have it too, dd has slept and slept for days and is really quite ill with it

anothernamereally · 11/06/2021 11:47

Should add - this is dd 5th isolation as a close contact and we've all avoided it until now despite many different school and nursery settings

Yeah I think this is quite an issue. I assume the LFTs shouldn’t be used with symptoms due to the fact they have a higher false negative rate than the PCR?

But I know people at work who have had symptoms, taken an LFT as they have them in the house and it’s easier than “the faff” of going for a PCR. Their LFT is negative and they come to work! 🤷‍♀️

CovidCorvid · 12/06/2021 15:31

And the message has got through….they know this isn’t the correct procedure….they just can’t be arsed!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 12/06/2021 15:43

I'm not in the UK, but I know at least one person there who has Covid and whose children have both just tested positive.

She caught it right after reopening from a friend who she met while out and about.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 12/06/2021 15:47

All these "messages" are so confusing though and non of it backed up with back bone, no one has to take any test at all.

Where I am it's chaos, no one bothers except one or two people, every one is confused, doesn't care, etc etc.

By out and about do you mean actually outside socially distant. I thought there were only a tiny number of proven cases of transmission in the way worldwide

No they weren't socially distancing - it was right after reopening when people were allowed to start mixing again and she was following all the rules, and had had one dose of the AZ. I felt so sorry for her.
ClarisseMcClellan · 12/06/2021 17:14

Am I right that wasn't in England @ZZTopGuitarSolo? We haven't stopped social distance yet, I've tried before to get proper details on outdoor transmission with social distance but haven't found any specific cases apart from one in China that I think was reported some time ago

IIRC my friend went shopping and for lunch with a friend, which is what I meant by 'out and about'. I was under the impression these are allowed?
