So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?

Any change to the road plan needs to account for regional variations I would suggest. In my local authority area in the South East we have had no registered positive cases for the last 3 days, and only 2 in the last week. There are no covid patients in hospitals according the local trust data. The last day a death was reported was 27/2/21.
Further restrictions here, I would argue, would serve no useful purpose.

Calm down folks. Drakeford who I am not a fan of said earlier, we really do not know what the effects of this variant may be. If vaccinated will we be mildly ill, will young people shrug it off. He is waiting for more data. It is not about re-opening of indoor restaurants rather the delay in hugging, kissing, mixing in large numbers.

Yes maybe we should have banned people from buggering off for weddings, funerals in India and coming back when the figures within India went through the roof. But we did not, so have to work within that wait and see what Boris says.

People (and Boris) are stupid and never learn. We will plough on just like we did with the Xmas fiasco until we have to lock down completely again instead of moving more cautiously until everyone is vaccinated. I hate people.

Every.bloody.time there's an easing of restrictions there's some massive fear campaign released at the same time.

@Wherediditgo

Is nobody else questioning the timing of this??

3 days before the biggest lifting of restrictions since last summer and all of a sudden the Indian variant is very scary and splashed across the news via sensationalised headlines?? After a handful more cases of it? When they have no reason to suspect it evades immunity or causes more serious illness? And the NHS is nowhere near being overwhelmed?

You’re being scared in to submission again. It’s like fucking gaslighting.

Exactly this.

Good point, if hospital figures do not rise then all is well.

@AlmostSummer21

I expect just blah blah blah bout being careful etc no actual action.

They should stop Mondays removal of masks in schools - it's a no brained & easy to reverse.

They should put a stop to the indoor socialising & hospitality venues opening etc.

Basically, they should put May 17
'Easings' on hold until further notice, but they're too wet to do it.

We will, again, wait until it's far harder to control, jut like they have every bloody time. They do not learn.

And again things will be much worse than they need to be, more people will die and more will have long Covid. All because they don't want to have to take an unpopular stance 🙇🏻‍♀️

Nope.

Announcement this morning that Indian variant hadn't led to more deaths!

Just sort the areas out where the infections are increasing! More vaccinations there - surely people realise by now that vaccinations work! They have said they understand that those vaccinated are not at any greater risk from variants and one scientist said we should stop going on about the variants since no more risky.

Barely had any cases in this areas for MONTHS now. If other areas cannot sort themselves out then they should lock down and not penalise the rest of us.

Please no, origami strain? What fresh new hell is this new variant

It's the one which involves lots of paperwork, things folding and people who can't cut it

Sounds about right actually ...

Don't forget he will call us all "folks" too.

I suppose it lands more pleasantly than "peasants".

I totally agree. I live in an area that was tier 3 and 4 towards the end of last year and at one point was the highest cases in the country.

Latest numbers show there are 5 cases per 100,000 and schools are all showing zero cases despite twice weekly testing.

What purpose would closing businesses down and locking us in doors again serve?

Local lockdowns and more control on those totally disregarding the rules is needed not blanket restrictions

Same here.

Hospitals are not stretched and very few cases so continue with unlocking. People do actually have lives to live and people do die of other things other than covid.

Well seeing them netting the ganges to catch up corpses is not scare mongering, watching them burning many corpses is not scaremongering, it is fact. Having said that Brazil is worse than India and no-one is covering that at all. The president seems to think it is weeding out the weak and reducing population from what I can figure.

@randomlyLostInWales

the new variant is there ALAS

I know - hence them wanting to accelerate the vaccination program in areas with it to stop it spreading.

Yes immunity with vaccination takes a while to kick in but in a few weeks there would be a smaller pool of people who are vunerable to infection thus limiting it's spread.

And where are these vaccines going to come from? Supply is tight for non-AZ.

Predicted this would happen. Who are we now protecting now the elderly and vulnerable have been vaccinated? We are destroying our children's lives and what for now? The vaccine was out ticket out of this mess and if that won't 'protect' us what will? We have no other option but to get on with life now as carefully as we can but I refuse to lock myself or my children away again. I realise he hasn't come out and said we are going back into lockdown but that's what will be next because this virus isn't going away.

“Predicted this would happen”.

You have no idea what the press conference is about. So you are still predicting. And presuming. But well done.

Really don't care what he has to say, my roadmap stays in place. It was Eid where I live and there were massive parties, streams of people coming in and out of each other's houses and cars full turning up. If that's ok then hugging my fully vaccinated mum is ok. Boris can fuck off.

So people celebrating Eid not actually catch or transmit covid then? Interesting that.

No more of this lock down - done with double standards now.

Just properly close borders except for the movement of goods. Cancel hosting the G7 summit in June, no more Mr Johnson PR trips around the country to set an example.

Almost all the cases of the so-called Indian variant have been traced to those returning from a trip there.

Is he going to stand there and say 'sorry folks, the Indian variant is spreading fast in parts of the country, I was too slow to put India on the red travel list, I hung on far too long because I was looking forward to my four day trip there'.

Its time all ethnicities start playing their part for the good of all and take
the vaccine.
That's what nobody wants to say....that some minorities put the wellbeing and livelihoods of us all at risk because of their selfishness.

Our children will be paying for this for years....we need to get real now.

Its about the Bolton varient. People in cloth caps are striding about dropping consonants and eating black pudding.
They are to be herded up and tranquillised.

When I went to have my vaccine a couple if weeks ago the centre was deserted. Probably more than 20 people working/volunteering there and in the 15 min I was there probably 3 or 4 people were vaccinated (there were 4 or 5 people actually doing the vaccinations) I booked on the tuesday and there were apts available on the friday onwards. This weekend they're doing walk in vaccinations.

Some people that volunteered still havent been called upon yet. I think there is scope to do many more people in a shorter space of time than the official rate.

We are NOT India and we are NOT Brazil - look at the differences before writing such rubbish - the Thames isn't being netted - I mean what are you taking?
