Indian variant - will the roadmap be delayed?

I was feeling very hopeful about the future until reading that the Indian variant is now spreading fast in some communities.

In light of this, do you think we will stick to the roadmap as planned, or will restrictions be kept in place for longer? It seems like we're still going ahead with the big opening up on Monday.

Also, what about weddings? My SIL is getting married in August and we're really hoping it will still go ahead!

I did comment on another thread in relation to this a few days ago but got accused of lying that I had had an outbreak in my workplace and that I knew people who were very ill despite vaccination, some of which had been hospitalised on oxygen.

Oh yes, I remember your story.

The same workplace where everyone had a terrible reaction to the vaccine and were bedridden and then to add insult to injury got Covid anyway and were seriously ill.

Oh and they’re all super young (so Christ knows how they’re all double vaxxed)

What dreadful luck you all have. You couldn’t make that up. Oh wait. 😂

Lollobrigida · 13/05/2021 17:36

Ah ok @Watermelon222 I agree with your post now. I do think quarantine should be taken seriously now, but yes, the govt was too slow to act in adding India to the red list.

But having said that, I seriously don't know how we are going to keep variants out forever, or if we even can in a global world. Who's to say the next variant won't rise in Portugal or the Sandwich Islands? ( Unlikely maybe, but could happen). I wonder if we should just ramp up vaccinations and deal with the imnumerable variants.

TruelyWonder · 13/05/2021 17:47

An estimated 82.1% of people classified as clinically extremely vulnerable had received both doses of coronavirus vaccine by 9 May, according to NHS England figures.

Plus 90% of NHS staff have had both doses now.

Scotland has vaccinated 98% of those aged 50 and over with at least one dose, while Northern Ireland has reached 93% and Wales 92%.

England, on average, has vaccinated with one dose 95% of the same age group, with the South West reaching 97% and London 88%.

The Over 50s and the CEV group accounts for 99% covid deaths. These figures mean we still have a way to go but great number of the most vulnerable are less likely to need hospital treatment.

I remember that too. To be fair, though the fact (ahem) that it was the Indian VOC seems to be a new embellishment that wasn't mentioned in previous posts, though.

Also, that poster's colleagues all had a bad reaction to the AZ vaccine...

It is absolutely unforgiveable to be scaremongering.

Lua · 13/05/2021 17:55

As I said, @IcedPurple the family I know personally 4 of the 5 adults that had one vaccine ended up with oxygen masks and one died.

I don't believe there are only such 500 cases in India, but you believe whatever you like.

pinkearedcow · 13/05/2021 17:56

Oh sorry @TheKeatingFive you already mentioned the vaccine and bedridden colleagues.

Fair enough. I think I 'like' actual statistics rather more than anecdotes from random posters on MN.

I think we should close our borders completely while we get this Indian variant under control. We should have done it a year ago and we didn't. Look where it got us.

There's going to be other variants all over the world that will be brought back here the minute people start going on holiday again.

I'm sick and tired of this government fiddling while Rome burns.

So it’s just the entire travel industry as well as the mental health of people with family abroad and people wishing to travel that can burn?

The notion that we need to live like this until the end of time and continuously shift the goalposts, that’s what I’m sick and tired of.

I'm interested in hearing your ideas about how this could be implemented on the Irish border, which must remain open under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement?

It’s true, all of it. PHE have been all over it. If you don’t want to believe it it’s really up to you, I have absolutely no reason to lie about it.

Sure.

For clarity, were they hospitalised or not?

LeSquigh · 13/05/2021 18:38

@pinkearedcow I don’t (and won’t) justify myself to you either. I have worked so many shifts to cover the shortfall I am exhausted and I really haven’t got the energy to be making up stories. Believe it or don’t. It’s not scaremongering, it’s factual. PHE have done a very thorough investigation in my workplace and the VOC was identified since I posted on the last thread. If you want to bury your head in the sand carry on doing so. I have a lot of things booked in that I really want to do this summer and I’ve been double vaccinated myself. Most of us have because we were given leftover vaccine very early on hence why most of us are so young. Our cases are not linked to travel at all either.

Let’s hope the VOC that’s affected us here doesn’t get out of control and you end up with egg on your face. I really hope it doesn’t because there will be some very sick people.

My 29 year old friend was hospitalised this week for 5 days on oxygen and antibiotics - double vaccinated with AZ. It’s no laughing matter and not something to piss about making stories up about.

Close them completely?

Are you absolutely sure about that?

Yes, three have now been hospitalised and have been very ill. All Indian VOC.

I don’t have time to keep responding to your dickish questions. Believe what you want.

I suspect, like in most things they actually mean close the borders completely to prevent travel that I personally don't think people should be doing
TheKeatingFive · 13/05/2021 18:42

Yes, three have now been hospitalised and have been very ill. All Indian VOC.

I thought on the last thread you said they’d been given oxygen, but not hospitalised. Details, details.

The Indian variant is a new addition though. Gotta keep it current. Wink

We just need a "government lawyer" and we've got a full set.

IrmaFayLear · 13/05/2021 18:42

My “favourite” anecdote was the poster who said that 10 colleagues in her school had died of covid. Funnily enough not a word about this made its way into the press Hmm . Perhaps it was a major conspiracy...

NoMLMbots · 13/05/2021 18:44

"On Thursday, the UK reported another 11 deaths within 28 days of a positive test and a further 2,657 coronavirus cases.

More than 35.9 million people have received their first dose of a vaccine, and more than 18.8 million have had a second dose, according to the government's coronavirus dashboard.
The UK had recorded 520 cases of the Indian variant up to 5 May, according to the latest figures published by Public Health England (PHE)."

How 'deadly' is the Indian variant? How anyone died of it yet? Anyone vaccinated died of it yet? Perhaps to early to tell? Maybe they should think about stopping being returning from India (via other countries) and quarantine them? Stable door locked after horse bolted again UK?

There’s talk of personal choice from MH so maybe not that far off.

We can split off into lockdown people and people happy to do normal stuff.

As long as the 'lockdown people' don't expect supports from the government or social distancing imposed to pander to their 'fears"

Don't be so ridiculous. Lockdown people could just as easily say as long as you don't ever expect hospital treatment.
Is it so difficult for you to have a more open minded view? I am not for one minute in favour of further lockdown but comments like this are really juvenile

My favourite was the poster than said 'everyone' in her major department had a serious reaction to the vaccine and so many people needed hospital treatment after the vaccine. Another thousands of people have died after the vaccine Hmm none of these 'claims' quite make it though do they! In something like 58 million doses of vaccine so very few blood clots and yet so many people worried about clots...

I remember that story - it was constantly added to and became quite amusing after a while. It just grew and grew. All those really ill people from the vaccine, all so young and all so badly affect and then they got covid as well and some really badly and needed hospital treatment and nearly died. I think the username was Pinocchio

I thought that was before the Indian variant though Hmm
