Public reaction if there is another major lockdown

My daughters and I have been out and about enjoying the relaxation of restrictions (within the rules). Everyone seems so happy to be out and honestly not many seem to be socially distancing. At first I was nervous and now I guess we are used to it though still distance as much as we can. The impression I get in our area at least is that everyone has mentally had enough and in their heads they have moved on and consider we are on our way out. I really hope we are and it's great to see numbers still consistently going down - but it makes me wonder how people would react if there is another major lockdown. Would most still comply?

“I’m hopeful it will be the final lockdown,” Ferguson said, “So long as we are relatively cautious in coming out of this lockdown. If we relax too quickly without seeing the effect of each stage of relaxation, we may do what we’ve done before and relax too much, see a surge in case numbers, and still need to tighten up measures again.”

I think we’re going slowly enough. We don’t move on if not anyway.

Flaxmeadow · 19/04/2021 14:56

I disagree. I think the majority of people inferred that 'irreversible' meant out of lockdowns altogether. Forever. By definition you wouldn't be going back into the same lockdown anyway - it would be a new one.

But what exactly did he say? What is the full quote?

For example Boris or Whitty or anyone might say something like (this is made up for an example)
"Hopefully we will have as normal a Xmas as possible if we all stick to the rules now"

People then read this as/press report it as,
'Boris says we will have a "normal Xmas"'

God almighty some people really are determined for this to drag on with no improvement ever. What do people get out of being so relentlessly negative all the time?

MercyBooth · 19/04/2021 16:21

@OnlyFoolsnMothers Im interested to see how they are going to keep a mask on a two year old.

That’s terrifying! I would 1000% not be complying with this one. They will be putting masks on foetuses next.

MercyBooth · 19/04/2021 17:39

Its ridiculous. There isnt a two year old who hasnt pulled their socks off FGS

Many scientists have said that once you have the basic formula of a vaccine that works it is easily tweaked for any variants that it may not work as well for. You just don’t read this in the media as it doesn’t make for such a fear mongering story.

I genuinely believe there will be boosters this autumn (maybe even just for the vulnerable). Then this will become like all the other endemic viruses that we live with and have good drugs and treatments for and some level of natural immunity within the population (unless you’re in Australia or Mew Zealand).

Pandemics don’t go on indefinitely...

Delatron · 19/04/2021 18:09

New Zealand

Delatron · 19/04/2021 18:09

The point is that once it’s not a novel virus any more it causes less carnage naturally even without vaccines.

Agreed. There are some people who are desperate for this to go on and on and on for some reason. Maybe they like the drama.
SweetMeadow · 19/04/2021 20:28

It’s not about the drama or enjoying being negative. Why would anyone wants this pandemic to go on?! It’s about not wanting to get complacent to then have to again endure the heartache and regret because we were not cautious enough.

Various people have definitely mentioned this on the BBC on at least weekly if not daily basis. Of course tweaking the vaccines is only step one though - then you have to make sure they are still safe and effective, and manufacture a huge amount and get them out to people. It's definitely possible quite easily, just not instant.

Yep, this is it for me - my heart can't take the crushing blow of getting all excited about life again, only to have it all taken away. My mental health is shot to bits and that would just about finish me off. Doesn't mean I want this to go on, in fact I'd like it over with asap so I can grieve in peace for everything that has happened and then move on with my life.
Horridcreature · 19/04/2021 21:22

I’d comply because I can only imagine it happening if cases in hospital and deaths are going up significantly. This is partly self interest in hospitals not being overwhelmed. I will have had both vaccines but if hospitals are full then treatment I may need (but not emergency) will be delayed or I may be more likely to get Covid in hospital.

I should be someone that complies as I have the resources, can wfh and currently good MH. As shown many others aren’t so fortunate so I can at least lower the number mixing by one

RedcurrantPuff · 19/04/2021 21:26

The negativity goes beyond just not being complacent. I fully agree we shouldn’t be complacent but people here are claiming as fact that we will definitely have more lockdowns and that variants will escape vaccines when that is not what the scientific advisers have said.

Flaxmeadow · 19/04/2021 22:33

but people here are claiming as fact that we will definitely have more lockdowns and that variants will escape vaccines when that is not what the scientific advisers have said.

But people aren't saying that. People are saying that it's a possibility

Either way, people need to stop reading into things that are not there. No one knows what's going to happen, not even the best science in the world knows.

People are too impatient. They are used to getting instant answers, at the click of an internet button and expect instant answer. Or just reading a post partly, or a headline, or an edited quote and jumping on it as a solid opinion or a fact. We just have to accept that we are still in a learning curve

Tumbleweed101 · 19/04/2021 22:34

Hopefully there will be no need for more lockdowns, unless there is something we're not being told.

The vulnerable have been vaccinated. Most over 40's will have been vaccinated soon, which is a significant amount of the older population. Why have vaccines if they aren't working??

We have lateral flow tests for day to day checking. Why do we need masks out and about if we have a negative test??

Between all the tests and vaccines we should be able to protect the majority of the vulnerable population. For the rest it will be like catching any other viral illness. Poorly for a few days but otherwise ok.

If we are worried about new variants, close oversea travel - both in and out - rather than lockdown domestically.

So no, I won't comply with anything except the details out of my control (closed shops etc) - however I will still risk assess, test etc.

ferryblue · 20/04/2021 07:17

@Magnificentmug12.

This is how it’s been for me. No kids, don’t see anybody. Don’t do anything. Stuck looking for work. I posted a thread about it in despair and got some great support and practical advice. I’ve been trying to force myself to do things such as visiting a new cafe every couple of days for a treat, or finding new walking spots. I want to maybe join some kind of club. My life won’t get any less lonely unless I force it to. Another lockdown would be devastating and I’d lose all motivation.

SnuggyBuggy · 20/04/2021 11:20

It can be really hard to get the motivation to take the steps to make things better. I know a few people who were just starting to make some progress with their health only for lockdown to put them back to square one. I really hope for your sake that we don't go backwards now.
