Public reaction if there is another major lockdown

My daughters and I have been out and about enjoying the relaxation of restrictions (within the rules). Everyone seems so happy to be out and honestly not many seem to be socially distancing. At first I was nervous and now I guess we are used to it though still distance as much as we can. The impression I get in our area at least is that everyone has mentally had enough and in their heads they have moved on and consider we are on our way out. I really hope we are and it's great to see numbers still consistently going down - but it makes me wonder how people would react if there is another major lockdown. Would most still comply?

This looks to be where they are going rather than giving poorer people money they are putting the feelers out in the media to see the reaction to this.

Boris, is this you 🤔

StealthPolarBear · 18/04/2021 18:18

If vaccines don't work (and I think they do) we're back to square one. Who would have predicted we'd comply so well this time last year when we were in our three weeks to protect the NHS?
I'd comply. I'm a rule follower and realistically if it's a strict lockdown we'd not be able to travel to see parents and in laws. However I'll be furious if it comes to that. At what point do we collectively get the opportunity to decide to live with the risk?

Magnificentmug12 · 18/04/2021 19:08

If kids are forced home and schools shut I won’t be doing that, I’ll be sending them in. It was absolute hell for all involved and never ever again!! Will be using the key worker status without breaking a sweat next time!

I cant decide how I feel about that article. My instict says no. But I am not sure.

Cant see how it will work though. Might have worked in 1921, but in 2021, it isnt as if we dont have cars and aeroplanes to take us places.

Imnothereforthedrama · 18/04/2021 20:03

To be honest if everyone has had both vaccine why would we need to lockdown again . So no I wouldn’t

MooseBreath · 18/04/2021 20:03

I wouldn't go to shops or anything since they'd be closed, but I'll be damned if I keep away from family and friends for another day.

HermioneWeasley · 18/04/2021 20:05

I don’t know many people who are still complying. People aren’t idiots - they know if they’ve had Covid and/or the vaccine, the chances of transmission are zero, so why not meet up?

Obviously if hospitality is closed people can’t do that, but they’ll meet up privately.

Beans13 · 18/04/2021 20:05

Obviously I wouldn't be able to go to the pubs, shops etc and would have to comply for that.

I would most likely still mix indoors with friends. They have all had the vaccine or covid already and we are in our 20s (healthcare workers).

I gave my mum a hug today and it felt amazing. It's been over a year of following the rules to 100% for me, but no more.

thenameshastings · 18/04/2021 20:15

I’ve definitely noticed a shift in opinions. It’s been over a year of lockdowns, with lots of hope pinned on the vaccine. If that fails and another national lockdown is needed I really dont think people will accept it like they did a year ago. I’ve noticed a big shift in opinion online over the past few months, lots of ‘enough now’ about restrictions.

Isolatedizzy · 18/04/2021 20:31

Surely it would depend on the numbers etc. If we had 1000 plus people dying per day and the number of new cases per day we had in January then people would be more likely to follow the rules & lockdown!

I know I would!

Delatron · 18/04/2021 21:11

Lockdowns are not an ongoing strategy. They are an emergency tool to use only once ideally.

They can shut the shops but they won’t be able to stop people mixing and seeing family. So what’s the point if that is where the spread is? Not half an hour in your local non essential shop. The government know this. The compliance in terms of household mixing will be so low there’s no point in destroying the economy again.

They would need a new plan.

BonnieDundee · 18/04/2021 21:12

I wouldn't . We were told vaccines were the way out. Vaccination is progressing well.

I really hope there isn't another lockdown. Went into town today and there are a number of.empty and closed shops. And a favourite independent cafe/bar has announced they are closing permanently. I doubt they will be the last Sad

Wishfulthinking1977 · 18/04/2021 21:48

Only did 3 weeks of the first one properly! That was when I really believed the need for it and was too scared to leave the house! After that never did! Can't go anywhere that's shut and that's a shame for the economy but luckily all my friends and family feel the same and we just have carried on! Small town 80% over 50s no covid deaths even though we have 4 nursing homes! 12 cases in 13 months including the large secondary school! 99% of over 45s 1 vax, loads of tourists all last summer! 12 people have died due to restrictions and that's alot here!! Very few masks and no social distancing for months!! So any lockdown would be completely ignored where I am and seeing as it takes 4 hours for a copper to turn up for a murder no one is bothered about being reported!!

osbertthesyrianhamster · 18/04/2021 21:49

I won't do the 'no mixing' or having people in my home or stopping my children from seeing their mates.

Slightly concerning that lockdown seems to be perceived as the default response to rising cases. It should be the nuclear option when no other options are available. It shouldn’t be the “go to” response.

nonono1 · 18/04/2021 22:26

Like others, I don’t see why we’d need another lockdown once the majority of the population have been vaccinated.

megletthesecond · 18/04/2021 22:30

Of course I'd comply. I'm quite fond of my family and we aren't yet confident in how effective the vaccine would be. I'd rather we were all alive and healthy once the pandemic is over, we don't live anywhere near each other.
After a year stuck with my bloody ungrateful kids I could do it again.

StealthPolarBear · 18/04/2021 23:07

Yellow fish you've described it well. Lockdown is s big deal but we're becoming desensitised. It's almost like not being allowed to see family is no big deal any more. It is. I'm happy to comply when it's needed but resist the assumption we'll all just happily pop in and out of lockdown for the foreseeable future

MercyBooth · 18/04/2021 23:31

Agree @YellowFish1647 its become the default setting. Johnson probably thinks "oh i can just do another lockdown" when he comes back from India

Exactly this

It should be a last resort when there are no other strategies

namechangeaga1ne · 18/04/2021 23:49

"I am getting concerned that India may turn out to be the next Cheltenham."

I feel angry about India not being on the red list. It's another case of Boris shaking hands. He wants to go to India, so speeding up the risk of fucking up the vaccine work...if we are to live with this virus, we have got to get better at not giving it the chance to run rampant. If numbers of deaths and hospitalisations start to rocket, I would comply with another lockdown. I think Boris is a reckless fuckwit though, so I'm sure if we have another lockdown, it will be because he didn't take alternative actions and would also lockdown too late - leaving us in a shittier situation for longer, with a high death toll.

RedcurrantPuff · 18/04/2021 23:57

Boris is a reckless fuckwit. But if he can’t be arsed neither can I. My goodwill is well and truly used up.
