Public reaction if there is another major lockdown

My daughters and I have been out and about enjoying the relaxation of restrictions (within the rules). Everyone seems so happy to be out and honestly not many seem to be socially distancing. At first I was nervous and now I guess we are used to it though still distance as much as we can. The impression I get in our area at least is that everyone has mentally had enough and in their heads they have moved on and consider we are on our way out. I really hope we are and it's great to see numbers still consistently going down - but it makes me wonder how people would react if there is another major lockdown. Would most still comply?

Let’s be honest here, it is not IF it is WHEN there will be a lockdown. BJ made that clear when he said lockdowns not vaccines brought cases down (yeh right). He was simply warming us up to lock us away again for winter (the next extension of the furlough scheme will tell us all we need to know).
The public can’t react, they are not allowed. Huge fines and jail terms for protestors or rule breakers. Stigma and risk of being ostracised for journalists who dare question lockdowns.
We know how all this plays out now.

MazekeenSmith · 18/04/2021 12:09

I'd continue to spend time with my family and boyfriend in whatever way we are all comfortable with. I'd see friends outdoors and I'd wear a mask wherever required but I won't hole myself and my son up again. I'd let my son see his friends outdoors in whatever numbers they happen to be.

dementedma · 18/04/2021 12:17

Feels like we are still locked down here in Scotland anyway. Still working from home, most things still shut.

Susie477 · 18/04/2021 12:20

the British will grumble but they always grumble. Grumbling doesn't mean widespread poor compliance at all

I agree. British people love nothing better than to moan, but as we have seen over that last year the overwhelming majority comply with the rules they are moaning about, and as long as they are able to continue to pay their bills and feed their families will continue to do so.

The US is a good testbed for whether lockdowns suppress the virus as it has 50 states, some locked down, some did not. These are the stats for the US...

I would comply as little as possible.

LemonSwan · 18/04/2021 12:22

No I wouldnt comply unless they shut the borders and made EVERYONE stay where they are for 2 weeks. No key worker movement. If you are that essential to your role live at work. Shops should be closed and everyone either buy before hand or apply for a gov set up food parcel system.

Sounds extreme but I would rather go China for 2 weeks and be done with it than have another year of this.

And yes I gather the above is impossible as we are not self sufficient enough to shut the borders.

So its a no would not comply.

EdithWeston · 18/04/2021 12:26

I think it would be weary acceptance.

Because it would only be contemplated if there was definite evidence of a major new wave inbound (maybe a new immunity escaping variant)

OverTheRainbow88 · 18/04/2021 12:30

We would all have to comply to an extent as we can’t go to cinema, cafes; pubs etc if all shut again.

I followed the rules from last March-June and from then we’ve seen family and friends outdoors throughout. I also would go to our second home as well whenever we have school holidays and weekends.

Iwouldbecomplex · 18/04/2021 12:40

No I wouldn't comply aside from the unavoidable like not going to shops because they'd be closed. I know most of my friends and family would feel the same as me

KatChocolate · 18/04/2021 12:55

I would be absolutely in favour of another lockdown if hospital cases started to rapidly increase.

I would much rather heed caution than end up with the situation that is currently happening in Brazil!

Just shows what happens when you don’t have restrictions.

I’m happy that restrictions here are easing btw, I’m working away from home, I’m enjoying the taste of freedom again but I won’t be seething at further restrictions if needs be.

FreyaFolkvangr · 18/04/2021 12:57

It's an interesting one. I thought last July that people wouldn't comply again and then they did.

I would comply if we had a significant numbers of deaths again. It's distressing to see that play out and I'd want to do my bit to help the knackered NHS staff in particular. However we would have to have another really big peak. 20-30,000 deaths doesn't warrant a lockdown in my view, as hard as it is for people who then lose someone. We have been comfortable losing that many to flu in the past. There has to be a balance.

I do also increasingly feel like I want to do as much as I can over the summer in case of a lockdown, more than anything. Rationally I know that if everyone does that, we're maybe helping the virus to spread again but then the last year has taken an absolutely massive toll on me and I need to enjoy things now as much as I can so if things do shut down I have the ability to get through that. I don't care one bit what others think of that - no one knows what individuals have had to deal with and in my case that includes several things that were severely traumatic. I have sacrificed a lot over the last year and followed the rules as much as I could and there comes a point where I have to matter too. I'm sure lots feel that way.

That is so fascinating. I hope they do a lot more research into how much of a difference lockdowns really make.
HarryLimeFoxtrot · 18/04/2021 13:07

I would beg to be allowed to go into the office. I’m not going back to the hell that is WFH for anything. It’s incredibly bad for my mental health. And I’ll definitely be using our key worker status (both DH and I work for companies involved in food production) to keep the DC at school. Fuck that home schooling malarkey - they hate it, we hate it and everyone is on edge and sodding miserable all the time.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 18/04/2021 13:10

It doesn't really do to compare us to Australia, NZ, the US or Brazil. All of them are very different from the UK. Brazil, god, ever been there? Covid is just yet another thing killing them - the crime, drug trafficking, divide between rich and poor is so vast it's hard to qualify, diseases of all sorts are rampant. A lunatic is in power and people put up with it.

The rest, well, all have huge land masses. Australia's population is lower than the UK's. The US is so diverse in so many aspects there's no real comparison.

CarmelBeach · 18/04/2021 13:13

"If you are that essential to your role live at work."

You would like to treat our key workers this way?

User135644 · 18/04/2021 13:24

We'll have a summer at least similar to last year. Winter is a concern so enjoy things being open while they're open.

sirfredfredgeorge · 18/04/2021 13:27

That debt & deficit are fine to make ridiculously enormous. I wish someone could explain to me why it's ok

Because it doesn't really need paying, there are no heavies holding the debt with baseball bats ready to kneecap you, or bankers coming to take the country away. It's one part of the government lending to another, there are reasons not to have it, but it's not terminal and nothing like household debt.

lljkk · 18/04/2021 13:30

Why do governments budget or limit spending at all, SirFredFGeorge?

RubyFowler · 18/04/2021 13:31

Same. Its the idea of wfh whilst home schooling that is unbearable and I don't use that word lightly. I actually don't think I could bear it again.
RedcurrantPuff · 18/04/2021 13:38

@Sstrongtn

Wouldn’t have any choice of things are closed but I’d still be having people to my house and seeing my family.

People would mix.

This
RedcurrantPuff · 18/04/2021 13:43

There should be no need for another lockdown. We have vaccines and wider access to tests. If I and the people I have had vaccines and a negative test why the hell would we not meet up or meet up outside with distancing? No it’s not going to be 100% risk free but nothing ever is.

RedcurrantPuff · 18/04/2021 13:46

Exactly @2021Vision

Boris clearly doesn’t give a fuck so why should the rest of us.

Topseyt · 18/04/2021 14:48

@osbertthesyrianhamster

I would comply as little as possible.
So would I.

Obviously businesses and many shops would be shut so to an extent there would be no choice. However, with regard to seeing and visiting my family then no, I would no longer be compliant.

I did comply a lot in the first lockdown but as time went on it became clear that my elderly parents were brewing a number of problems. If I had still been complying by this last lockdown then I would never again have seen my Dad before he died. That coloured my view of lockdowns.

If there are any further lockdowns my sister and I will still be visiting our mother's house as often as necessary. She is a vulnerable person now anyway, but for sure I'll be wasting no more time worrying about whether or not the rules permit something before I go to see them.

XenoBitch · 18/04/2021 15:09

If things are shut then there is little that can be done about that. But there is no way on earth that I will be told it is illegal to see friends and family, or leave my house. I will not comply with that at all.
