Are the rare blood clots associated with AZ linked to an underlying health condition?

Has a link been found between the people who have suffered from these rare blood clots? It seems quite likely the people who have suffered from them are considered vulnerable to coronavirus as the vaccination has not yet been rolled out to younger age groups apart from those in group 6.

My job was added to the HCP list late, so I didn't get my vaccine until mid/late Jan. I was in a waiting area clearly full of doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers. AZ is all that was on offer.

I did read somewhere about a possible link to the pill, but don't know any more.

Bluntness100 · 07/04/2021 14:21

Apparantly there is an announcement this afternoon.

The 1 in x million chance doesn’t really stack up, as it would be higher if say it’s women under 50 and over 18, how many of those had the jab and how many fell Ill

It does seem though it’s unlikely to be a link but there is a lot of dirty politics going on here regarding the eu and the Uk vaccine program so I would wait for the announcements and ignore the politicians,

ineedaholidaynow · 07/04/2021 14:22

@Cornettoninja I was just wondering if it is something they could offer before people have the jab (if they find it is pre-existing clotting disorder that is causing the problem)

Cornettoninja · 07/04/2021 14:27

It’s an idea @ineedaholidaynow but I don’t think we’ve got the resources to undertake that kind of screening pre-vaccination. We’d also need a definite condition to be looking for which I don’t believe we have yet.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 07/04/2021 14:33

There will be a live televised briefing from the MHRA and JCVI this afternoon at 3pm. No point speculating until we’ve heard what they have to say.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 07/04/2021 14:35

My understanding was that there is a connection between the clots and a rare condition called thrombocytopenia - my husband had it when he was younger. It's something to do with super low levels of platelets. Not sure if the vaccine triggered this or if the suffers already had this and the vaccine created complications. It is VERY rare though...

The idea that this is about politics and anti- U.K. sentiments is tiresome. Surely the doctors reporting the link are not anti-UK!!

Thrombocytopenia just means a low level of platelets. The causes are various.

Under 30s to be offered Moderna or Pfizer

I don’t get this. What about women between 31 and 60? They have said repeatedly on the briefing that it is mainly affecting women under 60!

Uk update briefing now on

ineedaholidaynow · 07/04/2021 15:24

The EU briefing said there wasn't any different risk ages or whether you are female or male.

Wilma55 · 07/04/2021 15:29

littlepeas think because benefits outweigh risk more the older you are?

peppercorn15 · 07/04/2021 15:31

@FuzzyPuffling

I'd like to know how many were on the contraceptive pill, which has its own risk of clots. Could the two together increase susceptibility?
Exactly. I had a CVST the clot that's all over the news from the pill, but have had AZ vaccine. Took vaccine with no concerns but would never take the pill again!
Bluntness100 · 07/04/2021 15:32

I think it’s because the risk of dying from Covid is so much higher the older you get, so the vaccine is much a lower risk.

However if you’re below 30 the risk of dying from Covid is so low there is no point in taking the risks with the vaccine

Bluntness100 · 07/04/2021 15:34

They think as Covid causes clots these clots from the vaccine are linked to what Covid does to you.

The question is obviously on the second dose, but they don’t know as it’s too early.

The risk of dying from covid is still higher in every age bracket I believe than complications from the vaccine.

There was a very knowledgeable poster on another thread who was a doctor and had crunched the numbers.

That’s not quite what they are presenting right now, the risk in under thirties is about the same.

I’d also very much like to know this
BatleyTownswomensGuild · 07/04/2021 15:57

The press statement said, 37 million vaccines given and about 130 cases of clots, none fatal. Still MUCH better odds than COVID-19....

ineedaholidaynow · 07/04/2021 16:13

@BatleyTownswomensGuild some people have died though

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 07/04/2021 16:19

@ineedaholidaynow yeah, I just read that on the Beeb. Must have misheard the woman on the press conference. Still the risk is waaay lower than COVID. I had it and it took me weeks to recover. Frankly, with odds that low for AZ, I'm still willing to have it.
