I've got so used to exercising outdoors I'm not looking forward to indoor excercise again.
Running outdoors compared to running nowhere on a treadmill? No contest.
Anybody else changed how they view excercise this last year?

@TheOneWithTheBigNose

£300 a month! Ours is £40 a month for me and DH and includes unlimited swimming for the kids!
Ours is for 4 people, it’s one of the big names and in a ‘nice’ areaGrin

We did get unlimited swimming as well Grin

No. I’m a nutritionist, fitness trainer and competitive bodybuilder and I’ve gathered enough equipment to not need the gym anymore. I don’t miss it, especially the toxic side of the gym scene. I’ve actually gained more muscle mass from home than years in the gym.

LarsErickssong · 26/03/2021 10:47

God yes!! I'm lucky that my gym have run a full online timetable whilst closed and let remembers borrow whatever equipment they needed but a) I miss the actual gym not just classes, I don't go in just to do cardio though b) I definitely don't work as hard at home as I would at a class in the gym and c) I am good friends with other people that do the classes and I miss them!

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 26/03/2021 10:48

Gym? No chance. Boring, stinky, hate the crowdedness anyway. Lockdown has given me time and tools to develop exercise routines of my own, and I've been outside for exercise almost every week for a year, and loved it. So, no gym for me thank you......but I am partial to a pool.

CovidCorvid · 26/03/2021 10:51

Yes, can’t wait. Need the gym for pump, weights, balance classes. I got Les Mills online and it’s not the same.

I love cycling outside but still love spin classes.

Chickenriceandpeas · 26/03/2021 10:53

I really hate the ‘why do people use a treadmill when you can go outdoors’ brigade, like running outside somehow makes you a ‘proper’ runner with great spiritual enlightenment, whereas treadmills are for heathens. How about you live in the middle of nowhere, with no street lighting, and it’s dark when you leave for work & when you get home? Or you live somewhere with hardly any pavements so have to go on the road where it’s unsafe? Or you live in an area where you don’t feel particularly safe? Or you like to mix it up and do a bit on a spin bike too, or some weights as well?
It’s not that hard to imagine why some people prefer then 🤷‍♀️

HarkAVagrant · 26/03/2021 11:02

Yes, as soon as I can. It's all very well to talk about the wonders of running outside but I have spent months meaning to do it and avoiding doing it, partly because I don't want people who are just going about their daily business looking at me while I am running, partly I don't know what clothes to wear (will it be too cold, too hot, will I look stupid), partly because I can control treadmills more easily (no sudden uphill, I can control the pace I am running at, I know I can stop whenever I need to and not have to then puff and pant my way home, it's easier to distract myself with TV etc. Also because if I say "I am going to the gym at 10.30" - I go to the gym, and once I am there exercise happens. If there is anything that the last year has taught me it is that if I say "I am going to do a run today" , I do not go for a run today. Nor do I do a workout in the untidy playroom, the only place with space, even though I have bought myself an exercise mat, because first of all I will just do the washing up, then I need some music oh dear DS is using my iPad, then oh one of the kids needs me to do something oh now its lunchtime well I can't exercise straight after lunch etc etc.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/03/2021 11:04

I never used to go to the gym, just went running outside but seriously considering starting for the weights. Used to go to the gym to do weights when I was a teenager but had ment been for a long time and my legs and belly really need it now.

Also, have you seen all the vitriol on here against outside runners over the past few months? Apparently they ‘huff and puff’ and breathe Covid everywhere, and selfishly hog pavements. It’s enough to put anyone off running outside.

Don't be put off by twonks who believe fake news.

I don't use a gym but I don't have any reason to think they're not "safe" (no such thing as safe, but I don't think there's a high risk of catching covid, despite the claims of it being "airborne" and floating around the gym atmosphere ready to crawl up your nose and infect you).

LolaSmiles · 26/03/2021 11:10

I've always been a reluctant gym user and prefer cycling/running outside. During kickdown I got a nice turbo and some free weights so I doubt I'll be going back to the gym.

kessiebird · 26/03/2021 11:10

Yes as soon as it opens, as long as it opens.. I love getting out of the house to use the gym, pool and sauna, get a discount via work. Totally safe I felt. I can get DC in for £5 so that's something nice to do together. We also sit around the pool on the loungers and read. There's always something needs doing at home. I'm paying for online classes at the mo but it's a bit lonely. Can't wait to go back!

ListeningQuietly · 26/03/2021 11:25

Monday, as soon as the pool opens.

lljkk · 26/03/2021 11:26

Am not a gym person, but will be in leisure centre pool the day they reopen. My arms are going to be so unfit, if like last time will take about 6 weeks to get back up to my previous fitness.

Personally I will be as long as local case numbers remain low. In a large well ventilated gym area I think the risk is extremely low. Outdoor exercise is preferred of course, but not always practical.

I'll look forward to classes returning, but they are obviously higher risk, so I wouldn't choose to attend those until after I've had my vaccine.

Katie517 · 26/03/2021 11:55

Yes I can’t wait. I used to go 5 times a week and then do one outdoor run at the weekend. I have some equipment at home but I do think you can’t get a decent workout for higher fitness levels without having the range of weights and equipment you get in a gym. It’s also the social aspect of the gym I miss and actually being out of my own house. I also miss the pool and sauna. I will be there on the 12th (fingers crossed) I went back all through the summer and right up to December and felt perfectly “safe” although saying that I don’t feel “unsafe” anywhere in relation to covid.

Twilightstarbright · 26/03/2021 12:00

I'm not in the UK but was straight back at the gym. I'm not superfit but I like using weights which would cost £££ to replicate at home, and lower impact cardio options. I also like the routine- drop DS at preschool then straight to the gym. FWIW I like running outside but some days my joints are too sore, I hate running in the rain and I won't run in the dark.

PurpleDaisies · 26/03/2021 12:02

I can’t wait to go for a swim more than anything else. I won’t be doing classes because Les Mills online is so good, but I will use the heavy weights at the gym.

rookiemere · 26/03/2021 12:04

Probably not going to renew membership when they reopen as DH has built up a gym in the garage with a weights machine and a running machine and I've been going to outdoor classes run by my neighbour and doing a monthly online running challenge. So although I belong to a cheap gym, I'd rather spend a bit more money and continue with what I've got.

catsandchaos · 26/03/2021 13:15

Yes. No sure how else to climb huge walls indoors 😄

SimonJT · 26/03/2021 13:19

Yes, I can’t wait, I have a day booked off work and a PT session booked for the 12th.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 26/03/2021 13:19

Absolutely a million per cent yes, can't wait to be back. Ridiculous that gyms closed at all in my opinion but hey ho.

changi · 26/03/2021 13:23

I lift quite heavy and have loads plus a machine. They used to be cheap secondhand but now they are as rare as hens' teeth and expensive.

I wonder if there will be a glut when restrictions ease.

Kimye4eva · 26/03/2021 13:26

I can’t wait to get back to spin. Really miss it. And reformer Pilates classes.

I can’t run much unfortunately so outside of a gym I struggle to get proper cardio in. That’s what I’m looking forward to.

Hairwizard · 26/03/2021 13:38

Fuck yes!! Dp has gym set up in garage but its just not the same and doesnt have all the equipment i normally use.
Plus dp also has his own performance centre which has been closed for almost a year with exception to a few weeks in oct/nov time. Fucking joke at this stage. No reason they cant be open at all. Should have been classed as essential.
