Will you be going back to the gym?

I've got so used to exercising outdoors I'm not looking forward to indoor excercise again.
Running outdoors compared to running nowhere on a treadmill? No contest.
Anybody else changed how they view excercise this last year?

God yes, I’m counting down the days. I have a dodgy back and I was in constant agony from sciatica and could hardly walk until I built my muscles up in the gym. I can’t replicate the lower back weight machine at home safely (could lift 55kg before 1st lockdown) and can definitely feel the pain coming back. I also can’t run on concrete due to my back so need the lower impact treadmill, stepper, xtrainer etc. Can’t wait to swim as well. Bought a new swimming costume last week in readiness!

UserTwice · 26/03/2021 09:00

I used to go to the gym for weights training, but I've now adapted to doing this at home. I think I will go back to the gym, but it's more likely to be for classes (which I didn't previously bother with at all) - the thing I'm mostly missing is being around other people.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 26/03/2021 09:00

Yes. I don’t use the treadmill though. I miss my body pump class, the free weights and the swimming pool.

blobby10 · 26/03/2021 09:19

Definitely going back - at 5am there aren't many of us in there. Its a well ventilated (and massive )space within walking distance from home so don't need to use their showers. I have lost so much muscle over the past year and it's really showing now I've lost 3 months of cycling fitness too. My gym is pretty basic and doesn't have swimming pool, sauna, steam room etc. They do classes but the timings wouldn't work for me even if I liked group workouts - they just aren't my thing

PatchworkElmer · 26/03/2021 09:21

Only once I’m vaccinated.

lurker101 · 26/03/2021 09:25

Yes, I can’t wait! Love the gym, it was much cleaner during covid than previously so hope they keep that up! The classes at my gym are fantastic, and I have a good rapport with the trainers so can’t wait to get back for some more conditioning having been running outdoors since Jan.
We have woodway treadmills at the gym and I find it much easier on my joints than pavement running

southeastdweller · 26/03/2021 09:27

Yes, first day back two weeks on Monday. Gyms shouldn't have closed anyway.

AnaofBroceliande · 26/03/2021 09:30

Yes! Can't wait!

Heathercob · 26/03/2021 09:36

I've never gone to the gym, but looking forward to getting back to swimming again when we're allowed 😊.

merryhouse · 26/03/2021 09:38

Yes. I like using the weights machines (I set them up and they tell me exactly what to do); and my running is so dire the treadmill helps. I tried running outside years ago, and I'd invariably give up far too early and the slightest uphill incline would break me. I'm planning on maybe increasing to 4.2k at 8.5kph at some point this year...

emmathedilemma · 26/03/2021 09:44

Yes, for my mental as much as physical health! I don't have space at home or motivation to do online stuff when I've been sitting at a computer for work all day. I run outdoors and rarely run on the treadmill, there's a lot more to it than that! I use the gym for cross training, weights, swimming and classes when they're available. It's also a sociable place and a chance to see real people which are few and far between when working from home. I went back last year and it felt pretty safe, everything was very well thought out and cases are now lower than they were then. Our local areas have had next to no new cases for weeks now.

TransplantedScouser · 26/03/2021 09:46

in a heart beat

I went back last time and now I've had the jab, there is even less reason not to go.

JellyBabiesFan · 26/03/2021 09:46

Damn fucking right I will be.

TransplantedScouser · 26/03/2021 09:46

I'm very over weight and outside cardio is hard on the knees - so I can use cross trainers etc until I shift a bit more lard

BloodyHellAudrey · 26/03/2021 09:57

Yes. My DH has really suffered mentally with them closed. When they open were now in a position where he can train me again, I'm very much looking forward to it.

Cloudyrainsham · 26/03/2021 10:03

I bought a treadmill so won’t as that’s the only thing I use. I can’t stand running outdoors, too hard on my knees. I much more motivated using the treadmill.

bobbiester · 26/03/2021 10:08

Yes - once cases are extremely rare I'll be going back.

willowsmumsy · 26/03/2021 10:08

I've been doing Joe Wicks HIIT workouts at home and already have some equipment. Instead of paying the gym we're going to have a cabin in the garden and put all the kit out there

CatCup · 26/03/2021 10:10

Yes can't wait. Swimming too!!

DK123 · 26/03/2021 10:34

I can't wait to go back. I'm disabled so a lot of the things you could do outside or for free like running don't work for me, I need supervision and some of the equipment to be able to move well or balance and I enjoy the Pilates classes. I also find having an appointment or class to go to at a particular time means I actually go and it's a good way to get out of the house which I wouldn't much otherwise.

Flowerlane · 26/03/2021 10:35

We gave notice at our Gym in January. We are now saving just over £300 a month on our memberships.

The only reason we gave up was because of Covid otherwise we would still be members.
One of the main reasons was when they reopened for the short period last year there were too many restrictions obviously on numbers etc which we understood but paying the same price just felt like we were being robbed when half the time we couldn’t use the facilities.
We enjoy being outside and walking the dog more now then being stuck in the one building.

We have been members for over 10 years so know the staff very well, they told us that they had had thousands of people giving notice on their memberships.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 26/03/2021 10:37

Yes, can't wait! I'm doing exercise videos at home but I really want the weight machines and variety of different exercise bike, treadmill, cross trainer. I don't have space for any of that stuff at home and even if I could find somewhere to stash them they're too expensive for decent quality. I just have a basic £17.99 a month gym membership.

£300 a month! Ours is £40 a month for me and DH and includes unlimited swimming for the kids!

megletthesecond · 26/03/2021 10:42

Probably not this year Sad. I think the airborne risk is too high and not all the studios have windows. I'm pretty good at my garden workouts now.

I'm still paying as it's a lovely local authority sports centre. And our gym teacher takes mini classes in her garden (back next week!) which I think she'll continue for some time yet.
