@NewYearNewTwatName

from the guardian link.

I mean, what? Shock
In Lower Saxony, authorities used post office records to seek out candidates for the first round of jabs, guessing people’s ages on the basis of their first names

Just how and who thought that was a good idea?

It's the only way they can do it.

Don't the efficient Germans have records of people who are in receipt of Old Age Pensions? Or Bus Passes?

MRex · 27/03/2021 19:52

I read about that, they were widely criticised in German media. For whatever reason they thought GDPR prevented them from accessing health records; rather than ask or check what anyone else was doing they invited 2 year olds and left out the grandpa.

I'm really sad to hear about comments to the Oxford team. What is the best way of mobilising a lot of people to say thank you and drown out this crap?
I know the key Oxford and vaccination teams will get chivalry orders (knighthoods / dames / OBE / MBE etc), but right now they probably need to know ordinary people are grateful and on their side through all the unwarranted criticism.

MarshaBradyo · 27/03/2021 19:55

Fortunately the rest of their feed is good. I guess when you sponsor a post it ends up in front of a wide range of vocal nutters and conspiracy theorists who put off anyone else commenting. But it is awful Sad

EasterIssland · 27/03/2021 20:00

I’ve to say related with Oxford that my work is related with something they’ve done and we’ve received praises from many people. The general public’s comments are really good to hear but there have been a few from some well known people that have really made me proud of my work, and I’m pretty sure the Oxford uni people who have been involved in all this have also been mentioned how important their work is and how have they helped saving lives

Dongdingdong · 27/03/2021 20:01

I thought it’d be full of thanks but no worse comments than you even get here. Obviously toxic trolls are evident in many corners of the internet. But I don’t know how we’ve even gone from recognising a scientific breakthrough saving us all from a dire future to you’re all evil without much pause.

Depressing isn’t it? I bet all the posters defending the EU and making out AZ is to blame will be first in line when it comes to getting the vaccine though Hmm

morethanbetter · 27/03/2021 20:10

I find the way AZ and Oxford scientists are treated horrendously.

NewYearNewTwatName · 27/03/2021 20:11

Dongdingdong

I had a look on FB not sure if it was the same one Marsha read, but most were clear anti vaxers and tin foil haters who are Sooo much more intelligent then the oxford scientistsHmm. Others were just trolls who were quoting the blood clot stuff, but those comments were 2 weeks old.

I’ve read they might add a few more countries, think it was the guardian. Italy / Germany and France
Spain for the 1st time is requesting pcr when you go via mainland.

LimitIsUp · 27/03/2021 22:09

@Itsalonghaul

We should all send thank you cards to AZ. Those of us that have had the vaccine, those that are very happy parents have had it.

Lets make AZ feel better, because they are doing an amazing job for the whole world!!!!

Totally.

Anyone got any addresses? Also for the Oxford team?

LimitIsUp · 27/03/2021 22:19

I've found this for Prof Sarah Gilbert (Oxford team)

The Jenner Institute Laboratories
Oxford University
Old Road Campus Research Building
Roosevelt Drive
Oxford
OX3 7DQ

I think I might start by writing to her and thanking her and her team, and then perhaps asking her who else should be acknowledged

LimitIsUp · 27/03/2021 22:23

I think AZ correspondence address might be
1 Francis Crick Avenue
Cambridge Biomedical Campus
Cambridge
CB2 0AA

But someone please do check in case I have it wrong

MrsFezziwig · 27/03/2021 22:43

Don’t worry Marsha, out in the real world I don’t know anyone who is not happy to have had the vaccine, nor do they care which one they have.

I wonder if there is a revival of old lady/old man names in Germany as there is in the UK, that would scupper things. But seriously, I don’t understand why guessing ages based on name is allowed under GDPR and using actual DOBs is not!

GDPR - another ridiculous policy we can thank the EU for.

MaMaLa321 · 28/03/2021 09:22

FRANKFURT — A group of citizens on Friday filed a constitutional complaint against Germany for allowing the European Union to borrow €750 billion earmarked for the Next Generation EU recovery fund.

I know this is a page or 2 back, but this is an interesting report from the FT, covering this.

www.ft.com/content/74841ea6-4fbf-4c7a-b015-66ba191ffc9b

quote 'Experience shows that they are quick to make a fuss but afraid to do anything that has actual operational consequences'. From the deputy director of the Delors Institute.

Motorina · 28/03/2021 10:50

Update from "Our World in Data". The UK has now given two doses to a higher percentage of the population than France, Germany, Italy, and the EU average.

Baileysforchristmas · 28/03/2021 11:08

We’ll take off with second doses now, they want to do about 12 million in April and beginning of May, I have a feeling the government have got enough Pfizer for 2nd jabs as they don’t seem to be to worried by the EU threats, the government have already said the export ban will have a bigger impact on the EU than the UK.

I'm still a bit worried about moderna if coming from Europe.. In early 40s and my surgery not finished vaccinating group 6 yet.
MaMaLa321 · 28/03/2021 11:36

fwiw I think that we should be offering vaccines to Eire, as they have a porous land border with us. It would help relations between us as well, so a win win situation.

notimagain · 28/03/2021 11:39

I'm sure why GDPR has been dragged into the specific topic of how Germany handles medical records - oh hang on, yes I do...Hmm

Anyhow you'll need a German/German resident to give the full reason for their level of protection of personal medical data but AFAIK it's for historical reasons, not because of something the EU did or insisted on.

NewYearNewTwatName · 28/03/2021 12:05

notimagain

its not dragging Germany into it.

it's from an observation from a link.

Which in turn highlights that many countries in Europe have not prepared probably for a quick efficient vaccine roll out. So along side the many fuck ups the EU made, some countries are adding to the problems by not being ready. Wasn't it Austria that has to defer its first lot of vaccines because they were not ready?

Itsalonghaul · 28/03/2021 12:12

If anyone knows please start a new thread maybe with AZ address, so we can all send in our appreciation.

If AZ feel undervalued, then we can do a Captain Tom moment for them for the cost of a stamp.

I honestly feel it is a terrible thing that they are so unappreciated. I don't think it should be left like that.

We love them, we should let them - and before anyone moans about the rainforest. I will personally plant a few trees to make up for it. I think some things are more important.
