Along with any other unnecessary travel abroad.

@MaxNormal

Good, holidays abroad aren't essential in any universe

It's not about the holidays. I really wish people would consider the long term implications of what's happening.

Which is what? The whole world is in some conspiracy to keep people in fake own country?

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Welcome to fucking Gilead.
We even have the masks!
MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2021 06:36

@notimagain

I thought they'd were illegal already and had been for some time...

From the existing "guidance":

www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-advice-novel-coronavirus

"Under current UK COVID-19 restrictions, you must stay at home (or in Wales, stay local). It is illegal to travel abroad for holidays".

Me too
Calpolforever · 23/03/2021 06:37

We're in a pandemic, and trying to keep people safe. Allowing foreign holidays this year would be negligent. Foreign holidays are lovely, we all want them back, but they aren't a human right. Putting it in the same category as the right to protest makes you look entitled and silly.

Tumbleweed101 · 23/03/2021 06:38

I think it wouldn’t have been necessary to make it a law if people were sensible enough to put holidays abroad on hold til next year. But last summer and reading threads on here show that people consider it a right not a privilege to be able to travel abroad.

I agree with it being in place until everyone has been offered a vaccination who wants one and possibly until a decision is made about how children can travel because they will pick up COVID even if vaccinated parents don’t and potentially bring it back to the UK.

We need to see how effective the vaccination program has been to the vulnerable and we will likely get an idea of that next winter.

Think the restrictions should have a time limit though and be reviewed regularly depending on how the pandemic is progressing in other areas of the world.

I don’t want to live with domestic restrictions much longer and if that is a compromise to it then it is one that I can live with. I should add I enjoy travel too but getting normal UK life back is a bigger priority.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/03/2021 06:41

@BackforGood

What's more shocking is that this wasn't the case a year ago.

Like Australia and like New Zealand, we are an island nation.
Let's compare the data....... Hmm

Yes, let's. Let's begin by looking at the relative size and population density of the three countries and then go from there, shall we?

Or shall we just carry on pretending that when we compare a country with 2.47 people per square kilometre to a country with 244.69 people per square kilometre, it's definitely closing the borders that made the difference?

It’s not a definite they won’t be allowed this year?

Probably extended to June / early July.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/03/2021 06:43

A lot of people on this thread need to read some dystopian fiction if they don't see the long term implications of this:

“That was when they suspended the Constitution. They said it would be temporary. There wasn't even any rioting in the streets. People stayed home at night, watching television, looking for some direction. There wasn't even an enemy you could put your finger on.”

― Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale

Lostinacloud · 23/03/2021 06:43

Can people not see the underlying problem with this latest legal challenge to our freedoms?

It’s yet another goalpost moved further down the track and I note that overseas travel has completely disappeared from the glorious “Roadmap” in mid May. Where to? 21st June? For now!

The whole way through this shitty year, the carrot has been dangled and then dragged back out into the distance. I cannot believe people are still happily accepting this slow and deliberate degradation of our freedoms. The narrative for months has been....just wait for this......just this one Easter.....this one school term.....this one Christmas with no family....the 22nd Feb roadmap.....wait until all elderly and vulnerable people have been vaccinated. All of the above has been duly waited for and achieved and yet still more waiting. This time it’s foreign holidays. It’s ludicrous. Holidaymakers can no longer kill granny because granny has had her vaccine!

Across the world millions of people are being vaccinated in countries with various variants in play and yet no reports of a resistant strain so far so I don’t buy the variant argument either.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/03/2021 06:45

Exactly TheOnlyLivingBoy, I find the direct comparison frustrating.

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2021 06:47

It has been said holidays were illegal before, the don’t book for something that’s illegal atm phase a while back for example, what’s changed?

Benjispruce2 · 23/03/2021 06:47

Thought it was illegal at the moment anyway. About time too. Our recovery is on a knife edge. No point vaccinating everyone only to allow new strains in .

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/03/2021 06:50

I don’t get the theory behind all these conspiracy theorists. Why would a conservative government, a capitalist government by definition, want to restrain the occupants of their country unless it was to try and stop adverse effects from a pandemic going on and on. They want people out there to spend spend spend.

I don’t understand why posters Max perhaps you can explain their POV?, what’s the dark theory behind why the government is doing this because I just don’t understand why people think there is one.

Lastfreakinglegs · 23/03/2021 06:53

Covid 19 and its variants are not going anywhere. They are now endemic like the common cold and. Flu. Are we going to put our lives on hold forever? There's something else going on here.

Benjispruce2 · 23/03/2021 06:53

Me neither @ThroughThickAndThin01. I had my jab yesterday so ‘they’ are watching me via the chip they injected at the same time. Should I still use mumsnet? They’ll have a field day tracking me going to work every day and Aldi on Saturday.Hmm

Benjispruce2 · 23/03/2021 06:54

Like what @Lastfreakinglegs?

You’re right but it’s probably a sign of strain people are feeling idk

So you don’t like the Tories but trust they are doing the right thing,

People do funny things to hold onto power. I think most policies at the moment are all about retaining power and avoiding criticism (aka arse covering)

I don’t think the govt is really interested in the death rate, other than to protect their status of power.

It’s a no loss game for them with these restriction policies when it comes to retaining position and power.

Parker231 · 23/03/2021 06:58

Wow - some overreacting here. The U.K. is doing well on the vaccination programme, the majority of other countries aren’t. Why jeopardise the progress we’ve made in reducing the numbers of cases and deaths.

MadameTuffington · 23/03/2021 06:58

It sucks but I do think it is wise to be cautious for the timebeing. I am on a low income and find it cheaper to go on holiday to France or Spain (with guaranteed hot weather, better food and scenery etc) than to holiday in this bloody country in August - it is overpriced and grim (my Mother disagrees) - I refuse to pay exortionate prices for shitty accommodation, travel and extraa - can’t wait until we can travel again plus DS23 and DD18 can do stuff overseas with their mates and start living again!

millenialblush · 23/03/2021 06:59

Yes the raging conspiracies are actually all coming true - forced vaccines, extended lockdown laws, the vaccine doing piss all to end the lockdowns, no seeing friends or family, no travel, the government passing through laws illegally, chipping away at rights and freedoms under the guise of what's best for the people, making the public feel guilty for the strain on the NHS despite the tories fucking it up for the past decade.

6 months ago I felt positive about the end being in sight, but what's happening now, despite covid numbers plummeting, is even scarier that the virus.

SoundOfFalsetto · 23/03/2021 07:00

That's what I thought. Contain us in this country, get the local economy up and running but don't let us go abroad and risk bringing anything back.

So, just out of interest. Where is "safe" to go on holiday this year, where you won't pick up Covid? Or, where is safe that is going to let you in?

We are staying here with no whinging and are happy to spend our money here in the UK and help out.

rosie1959 · 23/03/2021 07:01

Makes perfect sense why on earth would anybody want to travel abroad at this moment in time

hamstersarse · 23/03/2021 07:02

What about industries associated with travel? Are you happy to see them destroyed?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/03/2021 07:04

@Wellbythebloodyhell

It will be illegal to fart soon 🙄
If only.
