Summer holidays abroad?

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

Government rightly concerned about people going to Spain/Greece/France and bringing back a new variant. Even if you're vaccinated you can still catch Covid, it's likely you'll have no/low symptoms but you can happily bring it back to the UK unaware. The vaccinated part of the population are the older/vulnerable but obviously lots of us haven't been vaccinated yet so we shouldn't be travelling abroad anyway as risk getting ill there.

We have half our family overseas, my dh is desperate to visit his mum and siblings plus we have a house where there's been a landslip a few months ago and really need to get it sorted out ASAP so he might go and do that if that's classes as a valid reason. Otherwise will have to wait and hope there's no more movement Confused

I’ve got my wedding in Greece rearranged for July I’m trying to stay hopeful don’t want to have the stress of rearranging again xx

All schools are open in the UK

In the U.K.?!! You are asking this question? Just go and see them tomorrow! It’s insane how many people are sitting at home waiting for someone from TV to tell them what they are allowed to do. All of you will feel so much happier, trust me! Live your life...[/quote]
I thought it was still illegal to leave the house unless for specified reasons- eg work/exercise, so how can you justify travelling the length of the country to see any stay with someone, or to travel into a different uk country with different rules?

Surely if you caught you risk a fine?

That is why people with family living in another part of the uk are in exactly the same position as those who are living abroad, albeit with plans in place to relax this from mid May if numbers allow.....

Bumblebee1980a · 23/03/2021 13:15

Apparently there will be more information on the 12th April regarding travel and May 17th info on lockdown being reduced for international travel.

I'm wondering if people are more likely to be going away if they have booked a holiday outside of Europe.

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 15:09

I've tried booking flights for going to see my family today , they used to fly Tuesday Thursday and Sunday and all Tuesdays flights have disappeared til nearly end of July, wonder whether airlines are getting ready in case there is delays

Also British peoples can travel now to spain, spain doesn't restrict it as it was since xmas. However, remember that UK bans traveling abroad as of now unless for emergencies.

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 15:43

btw I've heard some rumours coming from Spain's media and I can see it in the British now,

"Although the new laws won't expire until 30 June, Health Secretary Matt Hancock suggested foreign holidays could be allowed before that date."

So we could see a delay in reopening the international flights

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 15:47

Yes BA cancelled most of their flights. I noticed that too easter

SoundOfFalsetto · 23/03/2021 16:49

I wonder if it is coincidental that our media and govt. are saying no holidays to Europe as the EU threatens to block AZ vaccinations.

No vaccines, no tourist income?

I don’t get your point

The point is there will be a review and it may mean that holidays are allowed after 17th may without an excuse

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 18:19

I don't think any country would use international travel as a way to solve a vaccine crisis caused by the EU. Our airlines, travel industry etc are just as affected as those in the EU. So I really don't buy into that at all.

forinborin · 23/03/2021 18:22

But children are at school. How come yours aren’t?
Oh, they have been in school since March 8th - it took a week and a day for the bubble to burst. Back to school from yesterday. Hurray! Maybe we'll make it another week at that speed.

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 18:45

@Lentillover1900 airlines and hotels are cancelling routes until July (my flights to visit my family yesterday I could fly in June ... now it’s July ) a friend in Spain has said no British Til July (she’s been informed by her line manager ) another pp had mentioned about ba cancelling Til July. So despite they want to open 17-05 there is rumours now saying July. A link I posted yesterday from the guardian aboir a traffic light style for returning back from other countries was mentioning august. I just have the feeling that the opening if things don’t get better in Europe is going to be delayed and the news are starting to speak about 1-07

I noticed today that they extended the ban on arrivals from SA and Brazil but not the Uk? So you could enter after March 30th?

I never fly. Bilbao is one of the most terrifying airports! But you could do the Bilbao ferry?

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 19:23

It is going to be illegal to go anywhere after Monday quentin it is an offence and carries a very large fine.

Moomin12345 · 23/03/2021 19:33

These people are doing everything in reverse. It's pathetic but I'm used to it. At first he wouldn't even consider face masks Hmm I went on holiday to Europe last year between the waves. I suspect the only reason he's upping anti holiday rhetoric is to put pressure on Europe and boost the local tourism in the UK. Eat out to help out, anyone? Envy or maybe the vaccines actually don't work and the vaccine programme has been a giant placebo effect. Otherwise what's the point of these draconian restrictions at the end of the pandemic?

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 19:42

Maybe because it is not the end of the pandemic moomin?! Hmm

We are kind of at the end of the beginning, so that is why you are confused. This has nothing to do with bloody vaccines, as our travel and airline industries are also going to suffer terribly, but he can hardly pack us all off in the middle of a third wave ffs. Knowing how shit things are going to in Europe in the next few months.

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 19:51

Thanks @QuentinInQuarantino I’d be flying to Bilbao as that’s the closest to gasteiz but there are no flights to July. I’m happy to wait til July anyway. And yes it’s an offence to fly at the moment but there are exceptions and I’m pretty sure I could find of them to be able to travel home if I really needed to. But as said I’ll wait til July

AnaofBroceliande · 23/03/2021 19:57

Hope you get there, Easter Smile. Bonus is that if you've been vaccinated you'll also likely be 3 weeks out from your 2nd dose.

You could always look at alternate ways than flying.

Because lots of people are loving this, Moomin, they enjoy these draconian restrictions keeping people down at the heel and the only thing they enjoy more is visiting their bitter spitefulness on every one else. It seems to really excite them, as you can see.

Maybe some do idk, I find it crushing.

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 20:01

Thanks @AnaofBroceliande I’ve my second dose booked for end of may. So it’s a bonus to know I won’t carry anything to my parents (I work for home and have a boring social life so I’m pretty sure about no virus )

One of tje reasons to travel at the moments is to attend a wedding. I’ve asked my sister to get married Grin she’s told me no chance.

I’m pretty sure things will be easier in coming months. I’ve no problem on self isolating when coming back. I just want to hug my family like most of us

Exactly. Family are in Wales - just moved from a stay at home to stay local order - and Scotland. Neither country has moved to allow unrestricted travel within them, let alone across the borders, and both are multiple hours of travel away from me so garden visits aren't feasible. The dates for cross border travel haven't been released.

It's really not sensible for me - teacher, 6 hours face to face unmasked contact with 30+ people all with families who have followed the rules to a greater or lesser extent - to go travelling hundreds and hundreds of miles to see family, all either elderly or medically vulnerable.

QuentinInQuarantino · 23/03/2021 20:08

Unless you have a second home, or a wedding, or are volunteering, or working, or a long list of other exemptions....
EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 20:09

But sure @cantkeepawayforever as soon as it’s allowed and you can you might try and visit them ? I couldn’t visit my family last year. My flights got cancelled one month in Advance in summer to visit my family and the quarantine was added. Back then I thought it’d be thing of 2 months so I wanted for my flights to come back. It never happened. I Stayed in the uk and travelled around (went to Devon and Cornwall and Scotland on my holidays) so now, if I can travel to see my family I’ll in summer. I might even be safer than those visiting family in the uk as pcrs might be requested. Something that it’s not within the uk.

So I hope all those that haven’t managed to see your family within the uk you can do it soon as well
