Summer holidays abroad?

544 replies

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

@Bored2death2020

Over 50% of the adult population vaccinated then they announce a travel ban from Monday with a 5k fine for trying. You literally couldn’t make it up.

Well you could actually under this government.

Will still go on hols for medical reasons, funeral or a wedding! The extension of the Coronavirus act is literally a green light for this shit government yo fo whatever they want. More lockdowns on the way - they have been planting seeds for weeks.
Hope those pro “stay home to save Christmas/ Easter/ whatever” are biting their elbows now

Exactly. We're not going anywhere.

My prediction is (and let's face it every single post on this entire board is only a prediction) that we are not going back to anything even resembling normal for at least 2 years. If ever.

I don’t understand what many of you know that I.e airlines don’t. Where I live several airlines are setting up different routes for this summer many within Europe. Are they clueless ? I don’t think travelling will be as easy as 2019 but ... I also don’t think it’ll be fully banned Til 2023. Restrictions in place ? Yes probably for some countries. If you’ve more info than easyJet , tui, jet2 , Ryanair , British airways please let me know.

cantkeepawayforever · 22/03/2021 22:26

I am increasingly feeling desolate and desperate that I won’t be seeing my family (by that I mean my immediate family - my mum and my brother) who live abroad any time soon.

My parents and brother live in (different) parts of the UK with their own Covid rules. I have no idea when I will be able to see them, either.

Bored2death2020 · 22/03/2021 22:50

@cantkeepawayforever

In the U.K.?!! You are asking this question? Just go and see them tomorrow! It’s insane how many people are sitting at home waiting for someone from TV to tell them what they are allowed to do. All of you will feel so much happier, trust me! Live your life...

I don't think any of us are saying we have insider knowledge. I can only speak for myself but the reason I am so negative is that nothing I've seen or read since the beginning of this pandemic has given me any hope whatsoever of ever returning to anything like normality. A lot of us are emotionally exhausted, depressed, without hope due to the constant shit we've put up with for a year now. We've probably all lost people we care about, know people facing real financial hardship, worry about our children and our families. Personally if I didn't have to stay alive for my children then I wouldn't. And I know many many people who feel exactly the same.
EasterIssland · 22/03/2021 23:09

@MrsGradyOldLady im sorry you’re feeling like that and I hope you can have one more strength. We’re nearly there. Take care of yourself. Flowers that’s what I do when I hear the news that I won’t be travelling once again. I can’t wait to see and hug my 2yo nephew. Last time I saw him he was 8months in a hospital bed. But I Keep telling myself the end of this is near and good things will be waiting for us

forinborin · 23/03/2021 06:55

@balkanscot
Same. It is only me and the children here in the UK, we have no one, no support bubble, no childcare bubble, no help. No furlough, no welfare. Only work, work, work for 12 hours a day in front of the screen in my bedroom while the children are bored out of their minds and destroying the house.
I find it bizarre when people tell me - yeah, but my mum lives next door here in the UK and I haven't seen her for a decade, so what!

newstart1234 · 23/03/2021 07:11

That’s awful forinborin. You have my greatest sympathy. I’m in a similar situation but thankfully my dc can go to school albeit for a shorter than usual day.

It seems that these restrictions are to protect against a variant that is yet to evolve. Immunologists seem to say that the immune response is broad meaning that the body is producing a variety of strategies to eliminate any virus. The response is also adaptable just like the virus so can deal with changes. I though the problem was with the idea that this was a totally new virus and so the body had zero practice. With the vaccine the body has had practise.

I’m concerned that these restrictions seem to be to protect against something that hasn’t yet happened. But that could always be the case surely? It will only be a few years before an outbreak of another novel human virus.

It's awful - I'm so sorry.

I'm in the same situation but abroad and thankfully the schools are open.

I have a business and was thinking of employing my parents so they can come, but because of bloody Brexit they don't have working rights here! But you can travel overseas for volunteering so they're going to volunteer at my business. Failing that - a wedding invitation maybe.

Many knickers may be twisting but they're vaccinated, I will be next week, we live in the middle of nowhere, they'll drive & pcr, I have been suicidal this year and my DS cries himself to sleep for missing them so twist away.

Whenspringcomes · 23/03/2021 08:44

@QuentinInQuarantino I feel similar, live abroad with no family and parents have booked to come in July & August, they’ve had the first vaccination and will be fully vaccinated before then. I don’t have a business so can’t think of a way to get them over if they don’t allow it. They’re desperate fo see their granddaughter, it’s making me think if this continues to have to move back to the U.K.

Whenspringcomes · 23/03/2021 08:45

@EasterIssland Banned in 2023?

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 08:46
@EasterIssland Banned in 2023?
another poster mentioned 2 years

Whenspringcomes · 23/03/2021 08:47

@newstart1234 How do you know they’ll be another virus in a few years?

I also feel like this is never going to end but I don’t understand why? It’s no wonder so many people have been questioning it all along, perhaps the so called ‘Conspiracy theorists’ are right after all, lots of this just doesn’t make sense

Whenspringcomes · 23/03/2021 08:47

@EasterIssland But what will be banned in 2023, flights?

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 08:49
@EasterIssland But what will be banned in 2023, flights?
I didn't say that sentence myself but I was replying to someone else who suggested it,

newstart1234 · 23/03/2021 09:02

I don’t have a crystal ball but scientists studying viruses particularly bat viruses says it’s just a matter of time before the next virus jumps species.

I was trying to get my children excited about a couple of day trips we have planned in the upcoming Easter break from school last night and one of them said ‘I just want to see granny’ 😔.

newstart1234 · 23/03/2021 09:06

Sorry my point about the next pandemic was that we don’t stay in lockdown just in case another virus jumps species. Imo there has to be a limit to the precautionary principle.

I know the British press is very excited about the slow vaccine rollout in Europe but it’s basically because of slow supply. The issue of supply will be solved within a few months.

Bored2death2020 · 23/03/2021 09:08

@Whenspringcomes
Because it’s no longer about virus... Numbers are incredibly low, 40% of adult population vaccinated, BUT they are introducing even tougher rules and making them into law now WITHOUT even taking them through the parliament!
You need to research Agenda 2030 - all the steps are outlined there. Half of them have already been implemented but people still think it’s conspiracy theory...

newstart1234 · 23/03/2021 09:30

I’m aware that within the U.K. children cannot see grandparents but the roadmap leads in that direction as the stars improve. It seems that as the argument is going the opposite way for those abroad.

newstart1234 · 23/03/2021 09:30

Stats not stars

Bored2death2020 · 23/03/2021 10:46

Why do you think the U.K. gov has put a tender for a COVID-19 media campaign that starts 1st April 2021 and lasts for 2 years??? Till spring 2023? Any thoughts? Doesn’t fill me with optimism ... check out yourself www.find-tender.service.gov.uk/Notice/002591-2021

I take because even if it goes low in numbers covid is going to be here for a long time , it wont be gone by the 21st of September

EasterIssland · 23/03/2021 10:49

21st of June sorry

likeamillpond · 23/03/2021 10:56

Ah well.Good news for local tourism I suppose.
Lots of seaside towns have been on their uppers for years so this could signal a revival and a second hey day for a lot of places.
Time to dust off the old bucket and spade!😎
