Summer holidays abroad?

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

@QuentinInQuarantino

Ohhh *@EasterIssland* such good news!! I needed that, Mila esker x
Ez horregatik Can’t wait to drink my kalimotxo ! I hope it turns out at least travel will be opened but of course taking care of which countries are doing well... doesn’t make sense to ban all travel.

Ps hope you get your jab this week

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2021 16:02

@Lentillover1900

The list of countries that you have to stay in a hotel to quarantine after arriving back in UK Angola Argentina Bolivia Botswana Brazil Burundi Cape Verde Chile Colombia Democratic Republic of the Congo Ecuador Eswatini Ethiopia French Guiana Guyana Lesotho Malawi Mozambique Namibia Oman Panama Paraguay Peru Qatar Rwanda Seychelles Somalia South Africa Suriname Tanzania United Arab Emirates (UAE) Uruguay Venezuela Zambia Zimbabwe

Otherwise isolate in your own home. Something I’d be very happy to do to keep my holiday!

Ok this useful although it will be possible for it to change

Good to know what is planned generally

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/03/2021 16:02

@Oblomov21

I really thought there might be just a chance. But not now.

EU keep saying that they're going to put a stop on our vaccine supplies, because their programme is not the way they want it, and many people in many countries haven't had their vaccination.

so if you did plan to go to Spain or France or Greece or Slovakia presumably half the people there won't of had it or won't be safe or you'll be paying for to stay in a hotel for two weeks when you get back?

what's the point? just as I was thinking we were doing really well in the UK .....every time I think things are getting better it just ....something just blows it to pot.

Today Radio news this morning says Boris wanted/suggesting another 6 month lockdown. And furlough to Jan 22.

How depressing. I was just starting to feel better, Spring, daffodils, hoping that things would lift , restrictions would lift for June. now this? just knocks everybody's confidence.

Boris wanting a 6 month lockdown? I doubt it, he was pressured into the others.

What? Why?

This can’t be right!

It’s not right
joystir59 · 22/03/2021 16:04

I don't think we'll be able to holiday abroad this year.

EasterIssland · 22/03/2021 16:10

6 month lockdown

Boris Johnson is facing mounting pressure to justify seeking a six-month extension to "authoritarian" lockdown powers in England, amid a Commons rebellion from Conservative MPs.

The Government is expected to receive approval from MPs to extend measures within the Coronavirus Act until October amid fierce criticism from some of its own number that the roadmap out of lockdown isn't fast enough due to the success of the UK's vaccination rollout.

MPs are set to vote this week on whether or not to extend the powers.

That doesn't mean he wants a 6 month lockdown though? Just a precautionary measure I'd have thought.
Lentillover1900 · 22/03/2021 16:13

That is NOT an extension of lockdown Confused

That is an extension of the ability of the gov To use the increased powers under the act

Lentillover1900 · 22/03/2021 16:14

Seems very sensible actually

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2021 16:14

Ok thanks for clarifying! Didn’t sound right

EasterIssland · 22/03/2021 16:15

Exactly. Doesn’t make sense to have us in lockdown forever if numbers are ok. The economy needs moving as well

AlwaysLatte · 22/03/2021 16:15

It would be great if they at least allowed us to go, but isolate at either end.

Chimeraforce · 22/03/2021 16:23

Dunno. But it's not trivial, despite what the covid police may say.
It's essential for mental health, a break from work, sunshine vit d and valuable family time. Not stuck in a box with screens while it pisses down.

EasterIssland · 22/03/2021 16:27

From bbc
EasyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren has been giving some reaction to the current increase of cases in Europe.

In comments reported by Reuters news agency, he said he "never thought this would be a straight line" to recovery.

Despite this, he believes there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that in terms of the return of air travel, "the underlying demand is there".

Lundgren said he believes vaccine certificates will be "part of the mix" for trips abroad and that there will have to be a risk-based system in place in Europe to help relax current travel restrictions.

You hit the nail on the head about the screens in particular.

I agree completely the sunshine makes all the difference, but not sure you can call it essential....!

Plenty of people can’t afford to go abroad, and plenty actively choose to stay over here for a more diverse holiday.msome don’t like excessive heat.

We normally go abroad but had a brilliant holiday in the uk last year. But then it’s what you make it... the weather was very mixed but you can still walk and rock pool, do crabbing and play games and generally the sun comes out after a while and then it’s lovely.

Families that stay in while it rains and let their kids sit on tablets are probably the same families who just sit round the pool and bar all week abroad, with their kids sat on a lounger still on their tablets....

ChimpyChops · 22/03/2021 17:54

We booked Florida in January 2020.
We have held off postponing until now, still undecided whether to wait a bit longer or just postpone it now.

ChimpyChops · 22/03/2021 17:54

That was for August this year.

forinborin · 22/03/2021 20:13

Some of news outlets report that there will be fines of £5000 for leaving the UK without valid reason.

Being completely alone in the UK, away from the family who are abroad is apparently not a valid reason.

EasterIssland · 22/03/2021 20:14

This is from next week. It was 200 now. God knows what it’ll be like in summer

Hopra · 22/03/2021 21:23

I am sure there will be some travel this year but I doubt it will be without lots of hassle and stress.

Bored2death2020 · 22/03/2021 21:33

Over 50% of the adult population vaccinated then they announce a travel ban from Monday with a 5k fine for trying. You literally couldn’t make it up.

Well you could actually under this government.

Will still go on hols for medical reasons, funeral or a wedding! The extension of the Coronavirus act is literally a green light for this shit government yo fo whatever they want. More lockdowns on the way - they have been planting seeds for weeks.
Hope those pro “stay home to save Christmas/ Easter/ whatever” are biting their elbows now

😭😭😭 I am increasingly feeling desolate and desperate that I won’t be seeing my family (by that I mean my immediate family - my mum and my brother) who live abroad any time soon. Fills me with dread. Didn’t bother me that much in 2020 but now I feel hopeless. 😢

Whenspringcomes · 22/03/2021 22:08

@balkanscot Same, I’m abroad and parents in the U.K., need to see them!
Why on earth is there going to be another lockdown 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bored2death2020 · 22/03/2021 22:18

@balkanscot Don’t despair. It’s not the end of the world. All you need to do is to get booking in a clinic and a letter ( just in case) and you are good to travel for medical reasons which is legit. It’s not difficult - just search for it, Telegram is your friend. Or invitation for a wedding - how difficult is that??? Just use your head, common sense and plan. Restrictions are there to stop the masses from packaged hols but if you book things separately and have “ valid” reasons you are good to go. Also these travel ban doesn’t apply to Republic of Ireland! So, a loophole ...Wink
