Outbreaks in schools

519 replies

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 04:15

Since schools have returned there have already been major outbreaks in both my child's secondary and the primary I work at.
The majority of school staff remain unvaccinated.
For how many other schools is this already the case?
I just don't know what to think any more.

WaverleyPirate · 19/03/2021 20:22

It's a race isn't it? One we might stuff up if we get it wrong.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2021 20:23

@WaverleyPirate

Yes that's right.
Which part? It’s the U.K. variant in France or new French one with different identifying number B something
Oblomov21 · 19/03/2021 20:25

None in ours. Surrey. None of my friends in neighbouring schools either.

WaverleyPirate · 19/03/2021 20:26

The French one. Or indeed any other variant which could head our way. I'll try to find article later.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 19/03/2021 20:26

As it has been since last March, whether there are cases in school or not is pure luck.

I think vaccination needs to extend to parents now

School staff first maybe?

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 19/03/2021 20:28

@WaverleyPirate

The French one. Or indeed any other variant which could head our way. I'll try to find article later.
I’ve seen plenty of articles. However none of them articulate exactly what the risk is. They don’t say if it will risk overwhelming the NHS, for example. They’re just sound bites.
WaverleyPirate · 19/03/2021 20:37

The fear from scientists was that the French one spreads too fast to be picked up by tests. Also if there is a third wave in Europe and we start travelling then we would import one which our vaccine doesn't cover.

tootyfruitypickle · 19/03/2021 20:44

Interesting, our secondary had a case this week. But I felt completely reassured as it was picked up in a lateral flow. It's quite odd as my area has had 0 cases on some days . So we're picking up the asymptomatic cases which we weren't before Christmas - so this is a very different ball game thankfully .

Paquerette · 19/03/2021 20:51

@WaverleyPirate

Again in the news scientists are warning that the vaccine alone won't necessarily stop another wave.
Probably because it's mostly the over 65s who have some immunity now. The majority of the 40 to 65 age group, who are hugely at risk from either being at work or having kids at school/college/uni haven't even had their first vaccine.

Schools are safe for kids, but not their teachers and parents.

Localocal · 19/03/2021 21:06

Nothing at either of my sons' secondary schools.

iwannafurloughmydp · 19/03/2021 21:11

I find it funny really when people Downplay it saying “ohhh really ? Not even one case here”... it doesn’t mean it’s not happening ! My son’s class (year 3) had to isolate 3x last year. Other 3
Classes as well, reception, years 2 and year 3x.
I was also a TA in a primary and had cases there. All in December and I caught COVID and ended up hospitalised for 10 days, nearly died. Plus I just lost my mum to Covid this week.
I know it has nothing to do, but because you can’t see or hear in the news - because they don’t want you to see- doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
I gave up my job because I don’t want to risk my life again not being vaccinated and being in close proximity to so many children.
I prefer to be unemployed than dead.
It is absurda that teachers are not given priority. And more absurd to hear people saying that they are not more in danger than the rest of the whole
Population.
I feel so sorry for all the loved ones with children age at home. The possibility is huge and whoever idiot says that is not, didn’t fell it in their own skin like I did.
The government hide, manipulate and downplay everything for their own benefit. No one cares if 1 or 2 teachers or grandparents die... they will unfortunately be just the unlucky ones in the statistic.

sherrystrull · 19/03/2021 21:24

@iwannafurloughmydp

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Nextyearwillbefun · 19/03/2021 21:30

Both is 1 &2 closed today in my school only early years open. 5 cases so far that we have been told about.

WaverleyPirate · 19/03/2021 21:36

💐 Iwannafurloughmydp

You have been through so much. So sobering. I really hope you get your vaccine soon.

ChameleonClara · 19/03/2021 21:37

@BungleandGeorge

If you look at the messaging it’s been made reasonably clear that there is likely to be a further wave.
Yes agree
ChameleonClara · 19/03/2021 21:40

@iwannafurloughmydp I agree when you say The government hide, manipulate and downplay everything for their own benefit I think the next few months are going to be very risky for parents and teachers.

I'm sorry you have had such a dreadful time Flowers

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2021 21:42

The lifting of restrictions was to be done in a way that it didn’t reverse

So when posters talk about third wave can you describe what you mean?

We will reverse?

tootyfruitypickle · 19/03/2021 21:48

I was thinking today about how we tend to follow france .

Difference is that we have such high levels of vaccine compared to them

I actually don't think anyone knows ?

iwannafurloughmydp · 19/03/2021 22:07

Thank you for your lovely messages Flowers
I do believe we will have a third wave, just like France and some other European countries are having right now. France is shutting up for the next 4 weeks again.

Why?
Because the are planning to reopen things soon, very much too soon ! Before everybody is vaccinated !!
It’s a waste of all our efforts for the last whole year.
Because is inevitable that people will continue arriving in this country from abroad...and the rules will start to be forgotten... everybody is mad about going on holidays abroad. European countries are already planning for British people to fly there as soon as May.... then comes summer time....guess what ? August: September... brace yourselves.

I don’t want to be pessimist, and also can’t believe this whole shit will drag longer and longer...I do want a holiday, want to see my sister in France, my brother and dad abroad as
Well... I want to hug my family that I don’t see for more than 2
Years now but I know what can happen if I do what I shouldn’t be doing.
It fucking hurts... but hurts even more for whoever stays in this world if I die.

I am hurt and I think I am talking too much here and I’m sorry but. As we very body else I also wish this is over soon ... I wish no family should pass through this pain of Covid. ❤️

ChameleonClara · 19/03/2021 22:08

I actually don't think anyone knows ? Certainly not Johnson that's for sure!

iwannafurloughmydp · 19/03/2021 22:11

I forgot to say that I’m in Essex where the “numbers” are low as well.. I haven’t seen any of the schools with cases that I knew in the news
Or the county website.
A friend of mine in Sussex has been diagnosed today, her partner passed on to her, that caught from someone that downplayed it and didn’t believe in it.

Her son went to nursery.
The nursery apparently didn’t tell any of the other parents that she got it, her son apparently also have it... they keep going normal with their lives ( the nursery) ... is a Russian roulette ! 😢

whattodo2019 · 19/03/2021 22:15

We are in the South and neither did my kids schools have had any cases at all.

StanfordPines · 19/03/2021 23:10

I’m going to say it again, my school is closed. It is not in the news. Just because it isn’t in the local paper doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

StanfordPines · 19/03/2021 23:12

Oh and if you look on the county website then it says the school is open too.

HereComesATractor · 19/03/2021 23:28

Presumably all the teachers and parents of the pupils are aware though StanfordPines? Which is what most of the reports on this thread are based on.

I don’t need to read the local papers or go on local county website to know what is happening in my local area, because I know enough staff to know whether schools have had cases or not, and I know all the schools here inform teachers and parents of any cases in the school.

I absolutely believe those who say that there are closures and outbreaks in their area, and I have no doubt that some schools are choosing to communicate differently to parents. So equally perhaps those who say that there aren’t cases, or that there are only few, in their areas may also know for sure
