EU threatening to cut off supply of vaccines to UK

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/03/2021 13:24

Because they've not got enough apparently (despite the fact that they've got a shit load of AZ stockpiled because they've mostly stopped using it)

This is really starting to piss me off now, and has someone who is due 2nd Pfizer jab in 8 weeks in starting to worry I won't get it!

They're threatening to stop supply to USA too.

Wankers

Merkel has at last tried to calm things down

www.politico.eu/article/angela-merkel-urges-eu-to-be-very-careful-with-imposing-vaccine-export-bans/

@BigWoollyJumpers

vaccinetracker.ecdc.europa.eu/public/extensions/COVID-19/vaccine-tracker.html#distribution-tab

Don't know whether this has been linked yet, but a good table to look at is the by country delivery and percentage distribution by vaccine type.

Interestingly Italy have administered 111.4% of their vaccines..... is that the Australian ones being used Grin
Baileysforchristmas · 23/03/2021 12:41

I’d love to know where the Aussie doses have gone

Defaultname · 23/03/2021 12:43

In Roman numerals, III is 3, so 3%.

TheHoneyBadger · 23/03/2021 13:37

Probably showing my ignorance here but how has Merkel had so much influence for so long? Presidents, priministers etc tend to have limits of how many terms they can serve so has she moved around between prominent roles that have kept her so influential or??

I'm not used to seeing anyone 'lead' directly or indirectly for such a long period of time except in Egypt and similar nations where they can just declare things like states of emergency and allow someone to stay in power for decades.

Motorina · 23/03/2021 13:57

Term limits aren’t universal (we don’t have them in the U.K.). She’s stayed in power by winning elections.

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 15:03

Boris has paid her off with ten million vaccines and now we will see a retreat from the hostile war tone to something more about international cooperation.

Now the mask has slipped we know what lies beneath, the damage has been done.

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 15:07

**that was a guess by the way!

LIamaDelRey · 23/03/2021 15:46

Probably showing my ignorance here but how has Merkel had so much influence for so long?

Angie was voted FOUR times chancellor in four coalitions and steps down this year. She was called Mutti (mother) by many and was deemed a safe pair of hands/firm and fair. I like her, especially considering some of the shit she's had (Putin bringing a dog to a meeting knowing she's afraid of them, disparaging comments about her marionette lines, personal invasion of privacy the couple of times she was publicly unwell etc).

StormzyinaTCup · 23/03/2021 16:10

Putin bringing a dog to a meeting knowing she's afraid of them

Wow, did not know that!

LIamaDelRey · 23/03/2021 16:27

edition.cnn.com/2016/01/12/europe/putin-merkel-scared-dog/index.html

Oh yeah, big man Putin, such a charmer smug sadistic bastard
Example of toxic masculinity/power trip right there.

StormzyinaTCup · 23/03/2021 16:45

What a total w**r🤬

TheHoneyBadger · 23/03/2021 18:15

I hadn't heard about that either.

I've never been comfortable with the Mutti thing. I don't think infantilising yourself in the face of a power holder is a good thing and it's a little close to worship for my liking. I think people can be in power for too long and that a nation can become over dependent upon them

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 18:21

Angela Merkel has done an outstanding job, I am sure she wished she had left a year ago before this shit show arrived and ruined her legacy.

I agree my perception of her was calm and safe pair of hands. I know phobias not joking matter but shes had deal with worse than putins dog. Shes had put up with meeting putin, trump and Berlusconi. It is sad end to her leadership. I'm glad she trying calm things down a little. Alternative view on her and udvl maybe she secretly disliked her and knew she would fail as udvl not popular within German politics.

Any update on extra doses
I noticed politico asked question last in tonight's press conference about giving Europe some vaccine and Boris looked cross and flustered.
Gave a short answer and scurried off as fast as he could dident seem a subject matter he wanted to engage with.
But I feel reassured if they do export ban we won't reciprocate with banning sending raw materials to Europe.
I still think behind scenes we may make more or swifter progress with India.

Angie?

3asAbird · 23/03/2021 19:46

Appears i spoke too soon but who knows if any truth as it is daily mail they maybe Stirring and speculating.
If they meeting thur why would they do ban wed most odd.
Says Germany supports the ban so contradicts last article.

Umbivalent · 23/03/2021 19:49

but not worthy of the vitriol and lies coming from sections of the UK press and on mumsnet

What lies do you mean, @usuallydormant?

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 19:53

Very confusing, just like everything else that is coming out of Brussels at the moment:

I have just read that Merkel urges restraint with the export ban!

Umbivalent · 23/03/2021 19:57

Merkel tends to say one thing to one person, then another to the EU. Cameron found that out when he thought she had told him there would be a deal.

Baileysforchristmas · 24/03/2021 06:26

I think the EU are actually going to ban vaccine exports to the Uk, not only AZ but Pfizer as well even though we’ve offered an olive branch of sharing AZ. I now really think they want our vaccine rollout to fail. Who on earth in the UK will ever want to join the EU ever again after this, unbelievable. Also for our exports to sit in warehouses to rot as they won’t be able to use them.

Depressing

3asAbird · 24/03/2021 06:48

I can't help feel it s a done deal and the main country it affects is UK.
Now they trying claim new criteria they may argue we too successful and they need it more like they did with Australia.
www.theguardian.com/society/2021/mar/23/eu-expand-criteria-used-decide-block-covid-vaccine-shipments

Apparently Biden will be on Thursday call.

I don't know what we will do.
Quite a few people don't realise the brexit trade deal won't be ratified until April so I can see that unravelling.

Boris is now in rock and hard place.
Even if we we have some members states that agree with us maybe we don't have enough and they can be over ruled.
Trying to sabotage our vaccination out of clear spite and win political points for some national elections .
What I don't understand is how this doesn't break international law.
I thought export ban as it stood now meant they could block but not use.
If they block and use thats stealing other countries orders.
Requisitioning private goods as thier own .
However they dress it up its theft and morally wrong..

nonono1 · 24/03/2021 06:50

I said the other day that Boris should never have offered to share our AZ - I don’t know what came over him. It’s times like this when I almost wish Trump was still in power, at least he’d tell Von der Leyen where to go.

Motorina · 24/03/2021 06:58

Appalling. Totally appalling.

I say that as someone who voted remain, largely because I saw the EU as a force for stability, freedom and order.

My views have changed.

I think the only thing the U.K. can do is ramp up production here. If that means retaining ingredients that would otherwise have been exported, then so be it. An export ban would leave us no other choice.

The EU’s aggression risks harming vaccine production world-wide. Shameful.
