When can I travel to Wales?!

My family live in Wales and I haven't seen my mum since October. Does anyone know if the 'roadmap' set out today allows me to travel to see family or do I need to wait to see what Wales does?

It going to depend what Wales sets out really as you have to abide by the countries rules that you are in.

Spacecadetagain · 22/02/2021 20:42

I’m wondering the same .. I haven’t seen my mum or grown up kids for over a year 😢 I think Mark Drakeford said he’s hoping to open up for Easter but it’s not definate

ikeairgin · 22/02/2021 20:43

Currently Wales is strict stay at home, we can't even drive to exercise. So no, you won't be able to visit just yet.

The next announcement in Wales will be on March 12th (we had one last Friday).

FinnegansWhiskers · 22/02/2021 20:44

No. In Wales we can’t travel for exercise. Next update in 3 weeks.

Can your mum travel to one of the border towns? metro.co.uk/2020/06/29/welsh-town-split-coronavirus-where-two-pubs-will-open-another-will-not-12919125/

Not currently, we're on strict stay at home.

(Obviously not now, but when we're allowed I mean)

X-post!

Suzy39 · 22/02/2021 20:47

Me too, not seen mum since August, lost my dad in all this too. Not seen MIL since Christmas 2019 (she works with elderly). My little boy is almost two and doesn't know his family apart from on a screen.

Friend has travelled from England to North Wales several time in lockdown and never been stopped.

We have a self catering cottage booked for 12th April (rescheduled twice already) and keeping it all crossed.

Mark bloody Drayford can go bloody whistle. Enough is enough.

I think once we're allowed to travel distances within Wales we'll also be able to travel to England, and vice versa.

In the first lockdown there was a period of only being able to travel 5 miles as an interim between stay at home and able to travel, but it was heavily criticised as those of us living in rural areas were already travelling twice that to get to the nearest supermarket.

Drakeford

Why should he go and whistle?! Because Boris and his merrymen are on course for another bonkers surge and lockdown??

SittinOnTheDockOfTheBay · 22/02/2021 20:54

We've got a 3 night stay in Anglesey rescheduled from last year. Mid May. Really hoping we can go. We go every year and missed it last year.

I know that's not the same as missing family.

Suzy39 · 22/02/2021 21:05

I agree we are most likely on course for another lockdown but assuming the roadmap plays out on course, i will absolutely be ignoring his advise to 'stay away' from Wales if he carries on with that stance. Drayford (and other home nations) should have been consistent with England instead of an egotrip to do his own thing.

I have my dad's resting place to visit and my mum to see. She has barely left the house for months or seen anyone.

RobynNora · 22/02/2021 21:10

I’m watching with interest. My Welsh mum still hasn’t met my four month old baby, who’s her first grandchild. I have gave birth while Wales were locked down and they don’t have support/childcare bubbles. It’s so hard not knowing.

RobynNora · 22/02/2021 21:13

I’m so sorry about your dad @Suzy39 💐

Wales does have support bubbles, they have done all through lockdown for people who live on their own.
RobynNora · 22/02/2021 21:19

@JemimaMuddledUp yes, sorry I meant an ‘under one’s’ support bubble like in England.

My mum is actually alone but the wording on the Welsh gov website suggests you can only bubble with someone in England if you’re near the border. It’s a bit vague 🤷‍♀️

Sorry for your loss.

If your mum lives alone you could form a support bubble with her I believe, I don't think there is a restriction on travel for this. You can read the guidance here: gov.wales/visiting-people-private-homes-alert-level-4

From the Welsh Government website:

"Local areas and support bubbles

There are no rules at Alert level 4 specifying that your support bubble has to be with someone in your local authority area, or within any set distance of your home. There are also no rules preventing support bubbles being formed with households outside Wales, and we recognise that these may in particular be the right answer for people living close to a border.

However, bearing in mind the overall objective of Alert level 4 is to reduce contact between people as much as possible, we do recommend that support bubbles are formed locally where possible. In particular we ask that people think very carefully about possible alternatives before forming support bubbles which would require extensive travel or travel into areas outside Wales with very high incidence of coronavirus."

JemimaMuddledUp · 22/02/2021 21:23

I think it discourages it, but in circumstances like the one above where the parent is recently bereaved and has no other support it would likely be within the law.

@JemimaMuddledUp thank you. I’ve read this a few times and always conclude I probably shouldn’t. Technically we could possibly do it, but it’s clearly discouraged. I’m probably a total mug as I keep hearing about English people breaking rules of to visit their Welsh holiday homes. But I grew up in Wales and keep thinking of all those ambulances outside Cardiff Hospital over Christmas 😔
