When can I travel to Wales?!

14down · 22/02/2021 20:39

My family live in Wales and I haven't seen my mum since October. Does anyone know if the 'roadmap' set out today allows me to travel to see family or do I need to wait to see what Wales does?

OP posts:

My sister has our mum over every week to Bristol to do childcare. It's allowed but an absolute nightmare because everytime either set of rules change they have to check if its still legal.

I would have thought Easter for leisure travel. That's pretty much the same as England isn't it?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/02/2021 21:46

@FinnegansWhiskers

JesusInTheCabbageVan That link is from June 2020
It is - so far as I know though, they haven't moved any of the towns since? Grin

I was thinking in terms of, if travel restrictions are partially lifted but people still aren't allowed to cross the border. Probably wouldn't happen that way though, you're right.

“i will absolutely be ignoring his advise to 'stay away' from Wales if he carries on with that stance. Drayford (and other home nations) should have been consistent with England instead of an egotrip to do his own thing”

Uh??? If you think Boris is doing better why not stick with Boris’ rules in England? Drakeford and Sturgeon are doing what’s best for the people of their countries. If you go against Drakeford’s advice and travel into Wales I hope you get a hefty fine tbh. The people of Wales are not allowed to travel for exercise. WTF do you think you can cross borders to come here? How fucking special do you think you are??

Wow, you are quite rude aren't you. And your comprehension isn't too good either is it, perhaps as I failed to use expletives.

Not sure where you think i haven't been sticking to the rules in England. I have.

My sister, in south Wales, high cases, was permitted to travel anywhere in Wales before Christmas. That is not in the best interest of the country is it? And all being well, and Wales' tourism for self catering opens up at Easter (that's beginning of April) and the roadmap for England being on track, i believe the only thing stopping me from entering Wales from England on the 12th April would be Drayford. And hopefully by then, Wales will be permitted more movement once again.

You are clearly 'special'. I would definitely encourage you to get out and enjoy some fresh air today and take a few deep breathes to quell that anger. Have a lovely day 😘

I’m hoping it’ll be fairly close to when England opens up more. I did see mum for a couple of days in September which was great, but I haven’t seen my niece and nephew since October 2019!

A friend of my mum’s came to visit her daughter in London just before this lockdown started...she’s still with her as can’t or doesn’t want to travel back to N Wales! She’s had to register temporarily with a local GP so she can get her jab.

110APiccadilly · 23/02/2021 17:04

Hopefully soon. I'm in Wales and I have an elderly relative in England who doesn't have long left, I desperately want to see her and for her to meet my new baby DD (the first of the next generation of the family). The regulations going in and out of sync between England and Wales is a nightmare for the (many) people with family on both sides of the border. I've not seen my brother since Christmas 2019.

Does she ever get stopped?
goose1964 · 23/02/2021 17:17

I've not seen my dad or sister since December 2019. In addition to the rules my dad wants to wait until we've had our jabs. I'll be OK because my first is tomorrow but DH hasn't been contacted yet.

Wyewaving · 23/02/2021 17:22

@Suzy39

I agree we are most likely on course for another lockdown but assuming the roadmap plays out on course, i will absolutely be ignoring his advise to 'stay away' from Wales if he carries on with that stance. Drayford (and other home nations) should have been consistent with England instead of an egotrip to do his own thing.

I have my dad's resting place to visit and my mum to see. She has barely left the house for months or seen anyone.

Why should the devolved nations be consistent with England? Boris Johnson is not the person I’d want to follow in a crisis, what has he got so right that you think he’s worth following. Why hasn’t England been consistent with the devolved nations?

Mark Drakeford has taken a more sensible approach imo in not setting out dates all the way until June, Johnson is setting people up for anger and disappointment if these dates have to be pushed back.

It is England that is inconsistent with the rest of the UK. Have some bloody respect for the rules in other countries.

ArosGartref · 23/02/2021 17:39

No @HauntedPencil. Never been stopped by police but even if there were I can't imagine it would be an issue.

pinkearedcow · 23/02/2021 17:43

I have heard that Wales won't open up to visitors until after the Easter holidays, I really hope that's true.

FinnegansWhiskers · 23/02/2021 18:48

You carry on ignoring Drakeford’s guidance to stay away from Wales. Carry the can and pay the fine - as have hundreds of other people from England who have blatantly ignored Welsh guidelines, throughout various stages of lockdowns, and visited Welsh beauty spots because “That’s the rules in England innit” 🤡

How do you know what Drakeford has planned for Welsh tourism anyway? Nothing has been decided yet! And please don’t tell Welsh people what the guidance is for Wales - we already know! We couldn’t care less what the guidance is in England. You do England and allow the Welsh to do Wales.

If you simply have to travel to Wales because you simply cannot live another moment without seeing your family as you and your family are so much more special than anyone else (when everyone else have to get on with it) before Drakeford gives the go ahead for Welsh tourism I hope you don’t expect Welsh NHS to treat you should the need arise. Or do you expect Wales to bow down to your health needs too?

BTW I live within walking distance of the beach and spend most of my days there thank you very much 🤣 I have a lovely life in Wales. I don’t have to run anywhere else to get some fresh air. That’s why I live in Wales. My life, my choice. You do you. I’ll do me. You stay in England. I’ll stay in Wales. Everyone’s happy. Sorted! 👌

Rootsmanouvre · 23/02/2021 18:57

My mum was widowed last summer, she’s in the midlands and I am in Cardiff. She comes back and forth to see me and my family at least once a month, she’s in our support bubble.

She’s not been stopped once.

Incogweeto · 23/02/2021 19:54

I've heard that second home visits to Wales will be allowed for Easter.

I feel like there's a whiff of xenophobia about this. The 'innit'. The 'we couldn't care less'. The 'You stay in England'. I'm just calling it out as it made me uncomfortable.
Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2021 19:57

"Wales does have support bubbles, they have done all through lockdown for people who live on their own."

Not all through lockdown, no. There wasn't one in March-April.

Makes sense because if you open during the holidays the numbers will be very high.

I was referring to this lockdown
peak2021 · 23/02/2021 20:02

My understanding is that an announcement on the 'roadmap' for Wales has yet to be made. I can appreciate that certainty and therefore an announcement as soon as possible would be welcome though.

I know when I can visit my mum (elsewhere in England), unless things drastically change, and can plan for this including asking for some time off work. I'd want the same for others.

@FinnegansWhiskers I'm with you 100% on your view that the guidance should be followed. Except I'd go one step further and those who make a journey that breaks lockdown rules in whichever part of the Uk they apply would face court and have points on their driving licence.

singsingbluesilver · 23/02/2021 20:02

I would expect people to abide by the rules of the democratically elected governments of England, Scotland and Wales. It is not up to you to decide whether the rules suit you or not. It is not on the say so of one man - they are the rules set by the Welsh Government. Please have the manners to respect that Wales and Scotland have the right to set their own rules.

ballsdeep · 23/02/2021 20:05

Why do English people keep calling him drayford? Is there some sort of joke I'm just not getting??

I wondered this. We should start calling their guy Bokkis Jockson, see how they like it.
ArosGartref · 23/02/2021 20:21

Nicola Surgeon is my favourite.

Frazzled2207 · 23/02/2021 20:21

my parents are just the other side of the border. Is a bit ridiculous because where they live there are plenty commuting over the border to Chester, and (to a lesser extent) vv.

Am annoyed that Boris can set arbitrary dates for foreign travel, but apparently there can never be an agreement between the four nations as to when travel between them can resume.

RB68 · 23/02/2021 20:22

the trouble is the law is not fixed and it does make you anxious. My Dad is in NW and terminally ill lives alone after Mum passed away late 2019. He really needs someone with him partly for mental health but def re physical health so we have been travelling from England (he is about 10m in) and stayed for longish periods of time but with no outside contacts and isolating before going as much for him as anyone else. I would say there is a police presence but none of us have been stopped to even ask what we are up to. Police seem more present on a weekend as work travel is OK.
