How far have people been travelling in lockdown?

I’m so sick of walking around my village. How far have others been travelling for a change of scene? 3 miles, 5, 10 or just stayed at walking distance?

OP posts:

We walk from our front door, yes it's the same few walks but it is what it is, it's supposed to be for exercise, most people who run, run the same few routes over and over. Every unnecessary car journey increases the risk of AA call outs, accidents that require emergency service attendance etc. I've been driving to work and to the supermarket once a week but that's it. I live by the coast and our local police are starting to dish out fines quite a lot for people coming here 'for a walk' and they've shut all parking near the beach, think about people in the area you're planning to go to too. At one point in an earlier lockdown we couldn't go for a walk in certain areas near our house because it was so mobbed by people who aren't local and didn't feel safe, so them having enough and deciding to travel restricted is even further.

Racoonworld · 20/02/2021 10:27

The most I’ve travelled for a walk was about 3 miles, within my county.

GintyMcGinty · 20/02/2021 10:28

Weekdays just out the front door.

At the weekends we drive up to about 5 miles to nicer more interesting walks.

Still deciding where to go today.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 20/02/2021 10:28

Walk from front door. Supermarket in same town unless I have to go to bank or opticians etc in the next Town

Northernsoulgirl45 · 20/02/2021 10:28

Sorry misread op

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/02/2021 10:30

Stayed within walking distance. Don’t feel it’s in the spirit of stay local if you have to drive and not fair on the people who live in those areas to make them even busier.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 20/02/2021 10:30

Furthest I’ve been is to work which is a half hour walk.

Going to the local tip later (been decluttering) and I appear to be treating it like a day out...

Notgoingonholiday · 20/02/2021 10:31

I drove me and DS to the beach 3.5 miles away for the first time on Thursday. That's the furthest we have been for a long time.

bumblingbovine49 · 20/02/2021 10:32

We often drive to walks at the weekend ( occasionally in the week as well if WFH hours allow ). We drive a maximum of 10 miles but more usually it 3-5 miles

user143677433 · 20/02/2021 10:32

Most weekends I’ve driven 3-5 miles for a nicer walk.

Last weekend as a special treat we drove 15 miles. While there we bumped into our neighbours, so clearly we’re not the only ones! It would have been almost the same drive in the same direction to go to the local large supermarket, so I can’t get too worked up over it.

PinkDaffodil2 · 20/02/2021 10:33

We are in a support bubble with my Mum so at a weekend drive over about 5 miles to her house, or sometimes meet at a big park half way. Other than that, exercise from our front door, 5k run, occasionally 10K loop.

PurpleDaisies · 20/02/2021 10:34

I’ve driven up to about 15/20 minutes away. That’s local here.

Woodlandbelle · 20/02/2021 10:35

Walked about 2 miles from home. Travel max 4 miles (we are not allowed beyond this distance) except for work 25 miles. It's so so so so boring and I need to get jobs done and we have restrictions for a further 9 weeks.

mrsknottschicken · 20/02/2021 10:35

We’ve only gone anywhere within walking distance for months. We are lucky because we have beautiful commons and woods around here but I’d love a change of scene I must admit!

WhatHaveIFound · 20/02/2021 10:35

We walk from home most days and our longest walk this month has been 8 miles. I wouldn't worry about driving 3-5 miles from home to start walking from somewhere else though.

CMOTDibbler · 20/02/2021 10:38

Walk from the front door, drive 5km to the river to swim, driven 13km to the big supermarket (only a very small one in our town)

User7458 · 20/02/2021 10:46

DH has been as far as 15 miles away on foot so 30 mile in all, round journey, he likes very long walks, sometimes he goes off at about 9 in the morning and don't get back until 7 or 8. Together we only walk about 5 miles away, I don't like further than 10 mile walk in all being a bit unfit. I have really only been in town in my car so a couple of miles but DH goes fishing in his car to a lake about 5 miles away, he's gone fishing today in fact.

zzizzer · 20/02/2021 10:46

We drive about two minutes away into a big housing estate with lots of huge winding roads, where you can cross over easily and keep your distance.

We would just walk from home, but we live on one long busy main road which has endless joggers and cyclists going up and down on the pavements, and its stressful and difficult to stay socially distanced.

Frazzled2207 · 20/02/2021 10:48

Have regularly driven up to 5 or so miles for a change of scene.
On Monday went about 12 which felt quite rebellious.

confusedofengland · 20/02/2021 10:50

For exercise we just walk or cycle from our front door- furthest we have cycled was 2.1 miles each way as DSes not very competent yet.

I drive 2 miles to the supermarket and/or 4 miles to help my grandparents.

Timeturnerplease · 20/02/2021 10:53

We live on a narrow country lane with no pavement, so I’m not keen on taking the toddler along that either in a buggy or on foot. At the weekends I usually drive a couple of miles to a different village to meet a friend and walk our toddlers together.

During the week she’s at IL’s while I’m at school. They’re further into the village with plenty of pavements and tracks so they often walk to her to the park in the morning.

I feel less guilty knowing it’s only once or twice a week I take my fresh air elsewhere.

HerrWanksock · 20/02/2021 10:54

As far as I want in order to get out into the countryside with my dog and meet a friend for a walk and a chat. Regularly drive for 25/30 mins to do that but the number of people I come into contact with are far less than if I just walked out my front door. I have OS maps and we do long yomps in the middle of nowhere. Don't care what the guidance says, I know my area and I know what makes more sense.

User7458 · 20/02/2021 10:56

I would probably be happy going 5 miles away in the car OP, we walked 5 miles to see some snowdrops in the week as the weather was nice but I would have been quite happy to drive that far for a walk, it felt local. DH regularly drives 5 miles to the fishing lake and the other anglers must do as well as fishing lakes are not usually in town.

starfish4 · 20/02/2021 10:59

I've left our village click and collect (food and one trip to Currys as laptop packed up) and work, both one day a week approx 3 miles away. Also, very lucky to have a hill to walk up so again probably a three mile walk. The furthest I've been is 12 miles was for my vaccine - in a horrible city but believe me I appreciated every minute of the city and drive.

Beenaboutabit · 20/02/2021 11:00

As far as I can walk in an hour or so.
