How far have people been travelling in lockdown?

I’m so sick of walking around my village. How far have others been travelling for a change of scene? 3 miles, 5, 10 or just stayed at walking distance?

OP posts:

Mostly we walk from our front door, but a couple of times we've gone to other walks up to 4 miles in the car, away.

starfro · 21/02/2021 20:19

Am limiting myself to 50 miles for exercise.

Heyahun · 21/02/2021 20:23

I just get on my bike and cycle around London I’ve no idea how far I go. It doesn’t matter - I’m alone on my fucking bike nowhere near anyone, not in the busy parks etc

edwinbear · 21/02/2021 20:24

During the week, we walk to one of two local parks for exercise. At the weekends we’ll drive for up to 20 mins to go to different parks for a change of scenery.

Scarby9 · 21/02/2021 20:31

5 miles by car once a week to meet a friend for a socially distanced walk.
Otherwise walk alone from home.

poppycat10 · 21/02/2021 20:33

I've driven up to 20 minutes away (just checked Google maps and it's 8 miles) to go for a run with a friend, but most of my exercise is from my front door - I am lucky that I can go from home, lots of people have to drive to get somewhere where it's flat and safe to walk/run or cycle.

I've not been anywhere else - all shopping done on foot, DH takes the car once a week (and it's only about a mile).

BunsyGirl · 21/02/2021 20:38

We live rurally and travel 8 miles once a week to our nearest large town (well actually it’s a very small city) for a supermarket shop. There is a small town in the opposite direction about 7 miles away but it only has a Tesco which we don’t like. We also take our children to ride their bikes in the nearest park which is 8 miles away.

6miles to work

I regularly put the dog and my mobility scooter into the car and drive 3 miles to a country park to exercise her. I live in a lovely village surrounded by wonderful walks, hardly any of which are accessible on a scooter, or are as muddy as hell at the minute, or closes for maintenance. Other option is to pound the pavements, which my dog and I both find deeply dull. Other than that, I’ve ventured up one junction of the motorway to do a click and collect from IKEA!

Silversun83 · 21/02/2021 21:12

During the week, usually walk from home to woods or local playgrounds. Weekends we have been driving to places for exercise up to around 30 mins away.

Other than the nursery run though, that is literally the only travelling by car we have been doing as get shopping delivered and both WFH.

MagdasMadHouse · 21/02/2021 21:13

Less than 2 miles from my front door

Beaniecats · 21/02/2021 21:15

We drive about 15 mins to walk but that keeps us in our local area.
I went to office this week wfh but needed stuff so 9 miles there and back.

Bonkerz · 21/02/2021 21:17

Nearest supermarket and back 6-10 miles

JanewaysBun · 21/02/2021 21:23

2.7 miles to one of my nearest green spaces once a week.

TinkleyZebra · 21/02/2021 21:32

Hardly anywhere during this lockdown except up to the local village (roughly a mile and a half round trip) to visit the park or shops, or occasionally walk along the local river in a loop (about the same distance).

Went more places during the last lockdown / summer because of the better weather and lighter evenings. Occasionally ventured as far as the local National Trust property - about five miles.

Flower234 · 21/02/2021 22:10

Depends if I'm meeting a friend- Have driven 40 minutes to see a friend who I hadn't seen in a year for a walk. If I'm going alone, then normally a local park, field or beach, anywhere's between 2 and 10 miles. I live in the countryside and can drive for miles without seeing another car easily. Changing the location of my daily walk definitely helps me a lot mentally.

For shopping, I end up driving 15/20 miles as our local supermarket is terrible and always packed, so I drive to the quieter one in the next town.

mootymoo · 21/02/2021 22:12

I go to work 5 miles away, hospital and healthcare centre is 8 miles

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 21/02/2021 22:13

From my village to the next town which is 2 miles away is the longest I’ve been by foot and thats not often either...usually i walk to the boundary and back in a 3 mile loop

Thats it apart from shopping, medical appointments etc

Flower234 · 21/02/2021 22:13

Sometimes I go on night drives at 3am and I just drive and stop somewhere random for another walk. I have insomnia and it's become my nightly routine to help me sleep. Grin I've found so many beautiful places I didn't know existed- that's one positive of lockdown. I've never been stopped, but if I was I assume it wouldn't be an issue as I'm driving for exercise- Yes, at 3am but still perfectly legal and safe.

Flower234 · 21/02/2021 22:15

I also live rurally and prefer exercising in the more populated areas- It feels much safer, both as there's actual pathways but also the fact there are more people around.

MummyPop00 · 21/02/2021 23:09

Usually my whole existence has been within a 5 mile radius of home.

On the very odd occasion, for the sake of my mental wellbeing I’ve drove up to 20 miles away for a change of walking scenery.

Glitterblue · 21/02/2021 23:34

Out the front door, or 5 minutes drive to walk by the river, to the beach.

Mockolate · 21/02/2021 23:37

I've been doing local walks.
About 5 miles or so and mixing it up with different routes every now and again lol

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/02/2021 00:07

The furthest we’ve driven for a walk is 6 miles. Mostly we don’t go that far. We also do some very short drives - so a five minute drive will give us a variety of walks in different locations, but there’s only one main walk or our local (small) park in walking distance.

Katie517 · 22/02/2021 00:10

Drive 80 miles once a week to see support bubble. Up to 15 miles for walks to meet friends. Can’t see the point in making myself more miserable by inventing a stricter version of the rules than necessary. Local is guidance and open to interpretation, my nearest supermarket is around 7 miles away and walking from our front door is not possible with a push chair, roads with no pavements or fields that are like mudpits!
