How far have people been travelling in lockdown?

I’m so sick of walking around my village. How far have others been travelling for a change of scene? 3 miles, 5, 10 or just stayed at walking distance?

OP posts:

I walk an 8 mile circular most days (and good grief yes it’s boring), so about 4 miles from home is the furthest I’ve been.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 20/02/2021 11:07

Walking from places within a 20 minute drive.

toodleloooo · 20/02/2021 11:09

So far we've only really been walking from our house, having been put off by police social media posts about using ANPR in car parks to shame people for travelling a few miles...😐 the lack of variety is really getting to us now, though. I'm wondering about trying a short drive out of here this weekend but I think it's just going to be impossible to park.

A friend in another country with no restrictions heard an interview with someone in the UK where she said she was really struggling doing the same walks all the time. My friend made light of that, querying how bad it could be, and I had to swiftly change the subject. I never knew until now how much the lack of variety would get to me until now. It's not even boredom - just a really uncomfortable, unsettled feeling mentally.

bloodywhitecat · 20/02/2021 11:09

Up to 30 miles 3 times a week and up to 5 miles on the other days. Like a poster further up thread we live on a country road where it is not safe to walk from the door so build our daily walk into other things we have to do.

noideabutstilltrying · 20/02/2021 11:10

I live between 2 towns so either a 12 or 20 mile around journey for anything that we run out of so I've had to get more organised when doing my click and collect so I don't run out of things.

Drive about 3 miles to be able to let the dogs run in the Forrest. If I go to a closer place it's rammed and people want to chat.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 20/02/2021 11:11

Oh, I've driven to work, but that's required rather than choice.

Bagelsandbrie · 20/02/2021 11:12

We live rurally and have been going on walks from our front door across fields etc but last week we were totally fed up and drove 18 miles each way to our nearest McDonald’s for a drive through. Blush

MaxNormal · 20/02/2021 11:19

Not including for work, driven about 15 miles. Actually much further as we've had local council area rules only for months but just thinking about the current lockdown.
Reasons for travel have been walks, takeaway coffee, just being bored.

Whodofthunk · 20/02/2021 11:20

We live in a large village currently rammed with walkers, runners and families out on bikes and scooters etc. I walk to work but usually have to cross the road back and forward 10-12 times in order to get there because of full pavements. Mostly walk from home but not going to feel bad going on a drive for a few miles for one because actually I will come across far less people in doing so.

Pranct · 20/02/2021 11:22

Every two weeks I walk 15/20 minutes away from front door and back. It’s far too busy out there. No one else in house walks more than 5 minutes away, just for post box.

itsgettingwierd · 20/02/2021 11:23

3 miles to the beach. It's same borough council and fields around me have been too muddy to navigate in all this rain. Impassable rather than not wanting too. We have proper footwear due to location.

3 miles to our support bubble who we (ds and I) visit weekly at weekend.

I would travel further if needed but it would only be to more woods or beach and just seems silly to me when the one I drive to is mikes long so I can walk different bits of it.

Babamamananarama · 20/02/2021 11:25

We drive to the beach which is 25 mins/15 miles. But for context we'd have a similar drive to a supermarket as we are v rural. It depends on context doesn't it?

Pastanred · 20/02/2021 11:30

Well I work 18 miles away so I’ll walk anywhere of any distance as no one stopping round here

That said most of my local walks are fine so 5 miles is the norm but I’ve travelled 10 miles for a special walk

ChairinSage · 20/02/2021 11:59

I can't be bothered to leave my house for another pointless walk, no matter where it is. I do visit a variety of supermarkets within a 30 mile radius to get non-essential shopping and look at clothes & housewares. I'm that bored.

oh dear that's not good at all. Do you have a car available to go a bit further afield? I live in the suburbs of a big city and I find it is possible to avoid the crowds with a bit of creative thinking
RedskyBynight · 20/02/2021 12:09

If it's just for a walk, I've only been walking from my house.

DD has regular physio at a centre that is 10 miles away. It is the highlight of both our weeks just for the element of going somewhere different.

ChocOrange1 · 20/02/2021 12:11

I travel about 10 miles to visit my support bubble.
I have travelled about 10 miles to meet a friend for a walk.
If this is still going on in the Spring, I will travel 10+ miles to visit beaches and more interesting places to walk. Its too cold to make the effort at the element

Icequeen01 · 20/02/2021 12:23

The furthest I have been was 25 miles from my home to be vaccinated. My 80 year old mum asked if she could come with me for a drive and change of scenery. She had her second jab on 9th Jan and I had Covid just over 5 weeks ago so we are about as safe with each other as we are going to get I think. She loved that drive bless her. I'm not sure if the police would have felt the same if we were stopped but I decided to risk it - it's possibly the only rule I have broken (if indeed I did break one).

TheAuthorityofJackieWeaver · 20/02/2021 12:26

I travelled about 35 minutes in the car yesterday to meet a friend for a walk. Otherwise we have just been driving a mile or two to green space, or walking from the front door.

BrideofBideford · 20/02/2021 12:28

We drove up 2 miles, to have a different starting point, and were promptly apprehended by Police

They said it was not essential

BrideofBideford · 20/02/2021 12:29

So the furthest I’ve been is 2 miles and even got told off for that

Should really get a discount on my car insurance!

VeryScary · 21/02/2021 19:25

I walk from the front door and drive to the supermarket (2 miles) once a week.

DenisetheMenace · 21/02/2021 19:52

By who? Wow, would certainly think 2 miles is “local”: the average walking speed of a healthy adult is 4mph.

mummyof2boys30 · 21/02/2021 20:00

We went the furthest today, about 20miles from home. We havent left our 10 mile area since before Christmas. The police where stopping people going into park and out. I had checked with local Councillor and only guidance she said and not get to hung up by it

Whatever9999 · 21/02/2021 20:09

Well up to now I've been going from my front door, anything up to 10miles run, but seeing as we have had loads of people traveling here, churning up the local footpaths, not respecting the farmers fields, not shutting gates behind them and letting their dogs off the lead in fields full of livestock, I'm going to get on a (usually empty) train to a even more out of the way village, and run back on hopefully less crowded and churned up footpaths.
