I cannot do this anymore. I work in an industry that has been completely destroyed by Covid and me, DH and our young DC are now facing an extremely difficult future financially. I have no option really but to retrain, which could take years - and I don't know where to start or whether there will even be any jobs at the end of it.

We've lost almost everything we've worked so hard for (including our home, which is now on the market) for a virus with a death rate of 1%. It's beyond soul destroying and I'm so tired and sad. I feel completely beaten down by life and like me and my family don't matter - it's all about Covid now. Honestly, what is the point?

@CautiousOptimist I really don’t think you can compare your situation with your Dh working from home with no childcare But With you as a stay at home parent to those who are desperately trying to work from home trying to deal with their dc while the other parent is either absent or working out of the home.

Your Dh is in an incredibly privileged position to be able to work from home and not having to deal with the dc at the same time and I know of many people at breaking point who are doing that at the moment.

OP, I am so sorry you are in this position. It’s so unfair you are in this position and struggling so much. You and your family do matter.

DuchessofHastings1 · 18/02/2021 12:11

So sorry OPFlowers your not alone.

I feel for you and your family and millions out there. There are some who think it's because people want to go to the pub and primark. Its destroying lives.
The new stats have came out with Covid. 99.5% survival rate, so its not even 1% death rate.

People won't stand for this any longer now we have a vaccine. The media are scare mongering with the variants but the scientists are positive and think we don't need to panic.

Get help from your GP. Cases are dropping. There is an end in sight

siestalady · 18/02/2021 12:12

@unmumsymummy21

I want all the people continuously campaigning for endless lock down to read your post and fucking listen. It's time for this to stop now. I'm so sorry and my thoughts are with you.

We need a clear way out now. Variants or no variants. This is the end of the line.

Agree so much with this. This situation cannot continue.
AyrshireAmbler49 · 18/02/2021 12:13

So sorry OP. It’s so shit for you and your family.
I too have hit the wall this month and am just about to get some anti depressants.

Champagneandmonstermunch · 18/02/2021 12:13

I'm so sorry, this is utter shit for so many people!

PhilCornwall1 · 18/02/2021 12:16

@Blessex

If Boris doesn’t lay out a very clear way out of this on Monday I think there will be a backlash.
If he doesn't, I really hope there is, a massive one!
Mulhollandmagoo · 18/02/2021 12:16

@unmumsymummy21 completely agree, I get so frustrated at the posts constantly lobbying for lockdowns!!

So sorry OP - I really really hope your luck changes Flowers

The new stats have came out with Covid. 99.5% survival rate, so its not even 1% death rate.

This is what upsets me - my family and I (and I’m sure many others like us) have lost everything we worked for, and we’ve run the economy into the ground for a disease with a 99.5% survival rate.

So sorry you are also struggling. Will anti depressants help someone like me? I’m not sure, as I will still be in the same nightmare circumstances whether I’m on anti depressants or not.

Anothermother3 · 18/02/2021 12:21

I’m so sorry for the situation you’re in OP. Healthcare is very secure job wise but don’t go into it if you don’t like the idea of the actual work. If you are serious about retraining allied health professions can be rewarding but it’s a stretched system. In the meantime it’s just awful what is happening and I hope things get better for you in the coming months.

I think you could try. There are several types of depression. One is when your brain signals misfire and the levels of chemicals in your brain are wrong (serotonin) and then this can be corrected by meds. But you can also get depression, which causes the same thing, as a reaction to events - which may be what is happening with you - if this has caused a chemical imbalance in your brain, which is definitely a thing - then yes they could help.

It's worth asking OP because you deserve to feel better if there's any way you could.

Shahira78 · 18/02/2021 12:29

Can I ask which industries you are in? Are there any transferable skills you can use in other fields? Perhaps start something online?

MaxNormal · 18/02/2021 12:30

@nomore33 I am so sorry, devastated for you. It's so hard if you're on the sharp end of these restrictions, and so totally unfair.

OakSnows · 18/02/2021 12:35

I’m very sorry you have lost everything, but so has the world. Your anger is at covid, it did this not the people trying to prevent mass death.
Say you have 3 kids, in a class of 33 each. 1% death rate is one of your kids losing their friends. The amount of people dying in hospital, including young pregnant people, well people etc with restrictions would have been apocalyptic if not. People who have lost healthy family members are also struggling and different things mean different things, to them and us things didn’t happen soon enough to protect our loved ones, but too much for others with their income, there is no good answer.

There is no good answer, we have also lost out its shit.

I’m so very sorry about your house and I hope someone has a suggestion for a job going forward,

reformedcharacters · 18/02/2021 12:37

I’m sorry to hear you’re in this situation OP and can really understand what you’re going though, I once lost everything I worked for for very different reasons.

Will you downsize or private rent? One thing that concerns me in all of this is the number of people who have made large savings wfh, if people like you are forced to sell then there could be a lot of opportunities for buying up property for BTL and that will make a chronic problem much worse.

It’s unbelievable that so many people could be made to suffer for a virus with only a slightly worse death rate than flu.

Scottishgirl85 · 18/02/2021 12:38

You matter so so much OP Flowers

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/02/2021 12:40

I’m so sorry Op- I don’t think this is worth the devastation to so many I really don’t! I wish you and your family a speedy recovery and I’m fuming on your behalf at this bullshit!

People die Oaks, that's the way of life.

The mean age of someone dying from Covid is 80 years old. 9 in 10 deaths have underlying health conditions. Most of us will get mild symptoms.

We have 1 in 2 chance of cancer, around 165,000 people each year, possibly more die of cancer along with other diseases. You could walk down the street and a drunk driver could run you over. Thousands die each year from the flu.

We can not stop life to preserve every life.

I really think you need to understand the data of who is dying, it’s not a mass of young pregnant people so don’t say blatant lies!

Flowers same here.

Both been unemployed since September/ October. (Although DH has 8 weeks work over Christmas for NMW)
We are going down the repossession route and will see from there. Not enough equity... and the little sliver of hope to turn things round.

Cantstandsmugness · 18/02/2021 13:04

I hear you too - its totally shit and they are still not giving my industry an opening date!! I honestly think the government doesn’t want it to open even though its worth over 6 billion!
I have just got a job as covid Marshall for a vaccination car park!!
It’s a job but paying a quarter of what i was on before! It is so depressing and i also hate the lockdown lovers that are sitting in their ivory towers - they wouldn’t be lock down lovers if they were about to lose everything!

Take care Flowers

Redtulipses · 18/02/2021 13:06

No, the death rate among children is far far lower than 1%!

RedcurrantPuff · 18/02/2021 13:08

It is terrible. All to shore up an NHS we didn’t fuck up and to save people who are generally older than the average life expectancy anyway. No one wants anyone to die but there has to be more to life than everyone losing their livelihood and futures to save them.
