I cannot do this anymore. I work in an industry that has been completely destroyed by Covid and me, DH and our young DC are now facing an extremely difficult future financially. I have no option really but to retrain, which could take years - and I don't know where to start or whether there will even be any jobs at the end of it.

We've lost almost everything we've worked so hard for (including our home, which is now on the market) for a virus with a death rate of 1%. It's beyond soul destroying and I'm so tired and sad. I feel completely beaten down by life and like me and my family don't matter - it's all about Covid now. Honestly, what is the point?

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 18/02/2021 18:02

I'm so sorry OP, I really hope that new (and possibly better?) opportunities come and soon, for you and others struggling from the governments policies. I know that reality isn't that simplr though.

And this is why I am broadly against lockdown. It's a blunt tool that causes massive economic and social damage.
A short fixed term restriction to take the heat off rising cases and hospital care is one thing, but indefinitely pushing businesses into survival mode or suspended animation for umpteen months, or for some industries it is rapidly approaching a year without the ability to earn, is massively damaging to individuals like OP, and the financial strength of the country.
Plus businesses are rarely actually on suspended animation free from overheads. Owners/ employees have to keep living in the meantime.

thefallthroughtheair · 18/02/2021 18:05

It's a disgrace, and at this stage seems to be because the government appears to have no intellectual rigour or backbone in the face of moronic scaremongering. Restrictions seem to have become an end in themselves for many, as it appears to matter not a jot what the costs are or will continue to be.
Mainly I'm depressed by people's short-sightedness and selfishness, but today I feel absolutely enraged. So you're not alone.

Highfalutinlootin · 18/02/2021 18:05

I'm so sorry, OP. I do not feel we should ever have locked down at all. No one seems willing to even consider whether the preservation of a small amount of lives is worth the decimation of quality of life for literally everyone else, and disproportionately the poor. I do not believe it is. I believe we've made a grave, immoral mistake.

And to those saying we're mad at the virus not the government and the COVID zealots, no, you're wrong: this was not inevitable. There were choices in how to respond. We chose a purely emotional, cowardly option that sacrificed entire swaths of society to privilege COVID sufferers over everyone else. The economically vulnerable have every reason to be livid.

SpringtimeBluebells · 18/02/2021 18:07

@AllMyPrettyOnes

Your anger is at covid, it did this not the people trying to prevent mass death.

🙄

Actually no.....

The hysteria around some of the posts...pretending that children are or will die, throwing under the bus, mass murderers and other emotional language from the lock down forever brigade is so unfair to people like the op ....

CovidLockdownmustend · 18/02/2021 18:23

In the UK people are kept alive in nursing homes clinging onto any life far beyond many pther countries.
India and the like have a much lower population age so in percentage terms less over 80's.

Average age of death 82 .
Over the usual life expectancy .

A local nursing home lost 7 people in their late 80's and 90,s all had end stage dementia - have you seen end stage dementia _ it could be argued cruel to keep alive but in the UK people must not die - I wouldn't want to be kept alive by my fingertips clinging onto life with late stage dementia

CovidLockdownmustend · 18/02/2021 18:24

Ave age od death 82 for covid here

Sacrifice the young for what

CovidLockdownmustend · 18/02/2021 18:28

Life expectancy India 69 years old
Here people dying average 82 with covid

Maybe we have so nany deaths because we keep people alive even when quality of life is wnd stage dementia now that is cruel

Yes, it's so terrible that disabled and chronically ill people of all ages (who are often far more economically vulnerable) are in such a privileged position as to be at higher risk of dying and for government to actually want to keep them out of intensive care beds so that the valuable, generally fit and healthy, population can access them in the event of accidents, pregnancy complications, cancer and other illnesses and so that the NHS, schools, transport, mail, social care and other systems can still function.

Completely immoral. Those pesky, overprivileged disableds, elderly, BAME and Diabetics expecting the social contract to be fulfilled by society. They need to check their privilege right now and get out of the way for the unfortunate, oppressed, largely white victims of their massive power imbalance.

MarshaBradyo · 18/02/2021 18:35

I’m so sorry op. It’s heart breaking.

What industry did / do you work in?

It’s unbearable atm

ChocOrange1 · 18/02/2021 18:45

Say you have 3 kids, in a class of 33 each. 1% death rate is one of your kids losing their friends.
No, it really isn't. 1% death rate is among the elderly. So it's like one of your kids friends losing a grandparent.
From June to end of Jan there have been fewer than 10 deaths in under 5s and fewer than 10 deaths on the 5-9 age group - they dont report exact number when they're so low - and 18 deaths in the 10-19 age group.(Gov.uk)
Maximum of 32 out of about 66,000 deaths.

Hollanda40 · 18/02/2021 18:56
@SpringtimeBluebells you're absolutely right. People working from home are very unaffected financially by this and they just don't understand how it is for people who've lost everything because of a virus which over 90 percent of people survive.
We're unaffected by this?? Really????

Horseshit. My mental health issues are worse than ever before. My kids still can't see their grandparents. There's nowhere we can go other than boring parks or the local shop. My husband WFH and has not left the area for three months. Our son is down with it all :( we're all depressed.

How exactly are we unaffected? People have had it worse than us granted but it's not a race to the bottom. The reality is many people are suffering badly.

If one more person say "oh we'll be back in lockdaaahhhn if they open X, y or z" I will scream.

I'm a resourceful and intelligent adult. I'm a tough person but my god, I'm done :'(

applesandoranges221 · 18/02/2021 19:11

@unmumsymummy21

I want all the people continuously campaigning for endless lock down to read your post and fucking listen. It's time for this to stop now. I'm so sorry and my thoughts are with you.

We need a clear way out now. Variants or no variants. This is the end of the line.

THIS.
Beaniecats · 18/02/2021 19:22

Agreed

HermioneWeasley · 18/02/2021 19:24

OP, I’m so sorry for you. Everyone has lost all sense of perspective. The average age of people dying is over the average life expectancy. We’ve forgotten that the elderly dying is a normal part of life, and completely wrecked our economy, our children’s education, non Covid health related treatments and the nation’s mental health. It’s horrifying. I hope things get better for you soon.

BrilliantBetty · 18/02/2021 19:29

Really sorry. It's a terrible time OP, I hope it gets better for you.
So many of my friends have lost their jobs.
We are in our early 30s, careers just getting there after putting in a decade of graft for them. For it to all turn to nothing.
Single friends lonely and worrying about there chances of meeting someone.
Friends with no way of making up their rent and tied in to contracts.
First time mums unable to share their joy and struggle with those they need there.

So much has been sacrificed.

unmumsymummy21 · 18/02/2021 19:30

@Hollanda40 I'm sorry I'm not meaning to diminish others suffering. I'm also really suffering. I can't stop crying and my anxiety is so bad the last few days that I can't breathe properly. But at least I don't have to worry about the roof over my head or the food on my table right now too. That's all I was trying to say. But it's like saying 'well you don't have problems because you're not a starving child in Africa '. Which is just too simplistic. We all suffer in our own ways and it's not up to anyone else to judge the depths of another's suffering. I hope you feel better soon. Peace to all on this thread and prayers for better times to all humanity.

My public sector pension actuaries in our set of accounts two years ago ie pre Covid said average age of death was as follows

Longevity at 65 if retiring today - men 22 years (so 87) women 24 years ( so 89).

Therefore we have demolished the economy, mental health is out of control etc etc for what?

Sorry just a bad day 😔

Enidblyton1 · 18/02/2021 19:42

OP, I’m so so sorry for you, and for the other thousands of people who have been really badly affected financially by covid. Anyone who comes on this thread to offer you anything other than sympathy is a complete bellend.

Rishi Sunak needs to compensate EVERYONE who has been affected badly financially due to Covid measures, then you and others wouldn’t be in this mess. We’ve already spent billions (including wasting a huge amount of money in fraudulent claims). It angers me so much that a family like yours has to suffer so much because you fall in between the cracks for financial assistance Flowers

TalskiddyTreacleMiner · 18/02/2021 19:50

I'm so sorry OP. I'm also in an industry which is being destroyed by the seemingly endless lockdown cycle. I'm fortunate that I am employee and still just about have a job. But, if things don't start opening up soon and there is a clear plan out of this mess then the business I work for will not survive. It's shit and it has to end...soon.
