Does anyone else just not bothering going anywhere at all now?? I’m exempt from wearing face masks but to avoid abuse I just stay home now, my mum keeps trying to get me to go to hers (I can she’s in my bubble) but I don’t drive so would need a bus but I don’t want to get on them for fear of being abused. Anyone else worry about this type of thing?

Well that’s kind, thank you 😊
(Though please, don’t get me started on politics and religion Grin

The thing I find really concerning on this thread is that not once does OP acknowledge she is posing a threat to other people. The whole question is framed in terms of "should I just stay at home because I might get abused", not "should I just stay at home because my medical exemption means I pose a threat to other people". It's such a selfish attitude and sadly all too common.

I think it's a very slippery slope for people to challenge mask exemptions. It's basically saying 'identify yourself as being different'. You wouldn't expect an LGBT person to wear a rainbow badge or a Jew to wear a star, so why would you expect a mask exempt person to wear a lanyard? It's no different. I'm also far from convinced that masks make much of a difference given that most people wear them incorrectly, so this has all just become another stick for people to beat others with.

That said, I would not go on public transport by choice at the moment, with or without a mask, it seems an unnecessary risk. Can you not meet your mum at a halfway point you can walk to?

The arguments on this thread are very much reminding me of the “wheelchair vs buggy” on the bus arguments that used to go on here all the time.

I was a much stronger advocate of no mask, no entry at the beginning of mask wearing, until someone else talked to me about it in similar terms as you mention above and I changed my mind.
I strongly believe that everyone who can, should, to protect other people - especially people who can’t wear one - but you’re right, othering people for something they have no control of isn’t right.

I am unable to wear a mask too, OP. When they were made law in shops (I am unable to use buses), I was willing to starve rather than face abuse. I have a dog, and I needed my medication so I had to go anyway. It was ok in the end. I have heard the odd comment but no one has directly confronted me.
I can understand why you are worried though. What helped me was avoiding eye contact with people and having headphones on. Maybe try some relaxing music or a podcast. The more you do it, the easier it gets. The videos you see online of abuse are a very tiny minority.

And shame on the posters who are adding nothing helpful in this thread apart from make the OP feel like crap.

I go out as much as the weather allows
Been out every day this week. Been in town today
I have my own car though
Try it
It probably isn’t as bad as you think

Hi OP,

I'd just go for it, I see so many people in the supermarket, on public transport and in the office without masks.

I cannot WFH and have been in the office and travelling a lot since the start. There might be once people who makes a remark, but most people will just go about their day.

As pointed out, people are selfish and probably won't even notice you 🙄
