Lost of taste- why’s it making me so sad?

I tested positive for the virus last Tuesday after my lovely partner seemed to bring it home from work (9 others tested positive at his work)
We both seemed to have mild cases. Headache,Temp and aches and pains. On Sunday/ Monday just gone I realised I have completely lost my taste and sense of smell.

Since then I have just cried solidly. My Boyfriend is absolutely fine and dandy and I’m just sobbing.

Can anyone relate? I’m so anxious it won’t come back? It seems pointless eating or drinking and I have this horrible feeling in my throat.

I could deal with not eating if I wasn’t so blinking hungry!
I feel bad as I have no desire to cook anything or even attempt to feed my step children this weekend!

Apart from the taste/smell I feel fine!

Someone tell me it will come back soon!?!

Why can't your DP feed the kids?
Yes it will come back. It is shit and weird so pick foods that feel nice (waffles, crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle) or that give you other sensory input ie chewy.

It will come back. You need to eat and drink. Their father can make them food.

Oh he will 100% I just feel a bit naff that I can’t really be arsed! Thank you, I will try different textures. I have just been having porridge and basic food as it seems pointless!

Oh OP, I get this! DH and I both developed Covid at Christmas. Similar situation only I brought it home to DH. We both had taste issues, though fortunately didn't lose it completely. For DH, the worst thing was that he couldn't taste cups of tea and he drinks loads! It's really horrible because it takes all the pleasure out of eating, even though you know you need to. I can't reassure you that it'll come back soon, but it will come back. We're both fine now. Sending hugs and Flowers. Please try to keep your chin up. It will be OK.

It will come back! I had the complete loss of smell and taste in March, right before it was identified as a symptom. I just felt very tired with it, and I was miserable at not having being able to smell or taste anything for a good few weeks-I couldn't even tell if my baby's nappy needed to be changed.
It came back gradually, and now I seem to have developed a very thing thing where things smell very chemically. Anecdotally, my sister and dad have noticed similar.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/02/2021 01:24

My daughter lost her sense of taste and smell for a month, and it made her miserable. She had a really hard time eating anything because the feel of the food in her mouth without any flavor made her horribly sick to her stomach. I hope you get yours back very soon.

I read this article in the Observer: www.theguardian.com/theobserver

And this from Nature:[[https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00055-6]]

I hope you get better soon, OP.

I am on day 33 after losing ,y sense of smell and taste. I have a tiny amount of taste back for certain things and very occasional whiffs of smell but otherwise no return as such. I am getting stressed about it now.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/02/2021 07:19

My sense of taste/smell didn't disappear completely, but very muted for two weeks or so.
I didn't have the energy to cook, so lots of microwave curry and spicy soup.
Reappeared quite suddenly - had an M&S chilli prawn linguine that nearly blew my head off, then relatively OK sins then.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/02/2021 07:20

*since not sins Grin

I lost my taste and smell on Sunday, by far the worst bit of my illness, I love food! Yesterday a was able to smell a small amount and could taste a little bit so it might come back sooner! Hope you feel better soon.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 11/02/2021 07:33

It would make me sad too because at the moment the only thing I have to look forward to is a take away on a Saturday night!

It happened to a friend of mine & she was fine after a couple of months, hopefully you get it back soon

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/02/2021 07:33

I hate to be that person but... I'm not sure your step kids should be coming over when you are meant to be isolating!!!

LazyName · 11/02/2021 07:58

I was sad about it too!! There was no joy eating anything and it seems so minor but it is annoying!
Mine came back as suddenly as it went, only lost it for about a week Smile

PracticingPerson · 11/02/2021 08:00

You're not being silly, smell and taste are so much a part of enjoying food, and food is part of enjoying life!

Flowers I hope it returns soon

Overdoor · 11/02/2021 08:05

This man set up a FB support group for people to whom this had happened — have a look.I think it’s called Tastefree Cuisine.

Isn't it 10 days now? T, W, Th, F, S, S, M, T, W, T, F
Fiona2020 · 11/02/2021 12:05

Thank you all! I thought maybe I was being dramatic but it really is making me down in the dumps . My DP cannot understand why I’m so upset but it’s impossible to describe what it’s like until it’s gone! Hopefully it will start to come back sooner rather then Later!

I’m free from isolation tonight at Midnight (not that I’m counting!!) and I currently have no other symptoms at all so should be allowed out! I can pop to the supermarket and get myself some spicy soups and curry!

I was looking forward to the M&S Valentine’s meal as well ! Grin

We have so few joys in life right now that good food (and drink) has become a huge part of our lives. So I'm not surprised you're gutted, I would be too! There's precious little else to focus on right now if you're stuck at home. I hope it returns soon. Anecdotally I've heard if you keep having stronger, spicier stuff it helps keep some of the connections firing.

DangerousMutant · 11/02/2021 12:50

I am over 6 weeks now. I can taste a little and smell certain things but its not really got any better. I cannot taste tea at all.

Still got the dratted headache too.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/02/2021 22:24

As it was posted today I assumed last Tuesday was 2 days ago!! Blush

@Hazelnutlatteplease it’s probably my mistake! I wrote it late last night. We have been isolating 10days and by the time I see the kids it will be 12 :) track and trace say we are fine to leave the house and go about our business (me to tesco!) as we have no symptoms- well only this bloody taste thing!

I also lost my taste and smell with covid. It only lasted maybe 10 days max..

In the meantime I recommend lamb madras and whisky. They were the only things I could taste.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 12/02/2021 00:01

As soon as SleepingStandingUp said that it made sense and other people clearly got it!!!! I was partially thinking it saved you a job if you had been feeling too crappy have thought about it!!!

I left the taste thing to those more knowledgeable than me. Must be damn crappy though!

edoc · 12/02/2021 00:03

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but 11 months in I can still not smell or taste, am now trying smell training. I've found it very hard

Fiona2020 · 12/02/2021 00:28

@MrsGradyOldLady noted! I will try anything. I had ginger jam on toast today and I could slightly taste the heat!

@edoc I am so so sorry to hear that. That must be unbearable. I’m not sure how you have coped. I don’t think I would. I hope the training helps x
