We will all have a great British summer

Says Matt Hancock.
Personally, I am optimistic. I am struggling without my DP hugely. Have not seen him since Christmas as we live apart and with our adult kids. Normally we would be going to gigs, restaurants and holidays so I'm so pleased an end is in sight when I can stay at his and we can carry on as we did pre coronavirus times.

I don't think it will be a normal as in pre-Covid 19 summer, but it will be a lot better than it is now, or was last May/June.

The only drawback is that there are people who would never want to be near me on holiday (and vice-versa) who might be if UK holidays are the only real option.

LizFlowers · 31/01/2021 17:45

I hope we do, we certainly had some very good weather last year. I would like to enjoy it more than I did then. Small outings, not too far away, would suit me fine and be good for my health. I'm determined to make the most of it!

My hope is that people are sensible and don't flood the coast and countryside en masse so we are back to square one. There really is no need to do that in order to stretch our legs and enjoy some good weather.

FourTeaFallOut · 31/01/2021 17:49

Well that is intriguing. What the hell are you doing on holiday (so I can wait for the aibu in six months time)?

Zogstart · 31/01/2021 17:51

Cornwalls gonna be chocka!

wanderings · 31/01/2021 17:52

Was this a carefully-timed soundbite from the spin machine to try to stop the public despairing and rioting through February, March, April, May? The public is extremely BORED, watching paint dry, as well as our lives, jobs, businesses, and mental health crumbling around us. As we're now ending January, many people will be turning over the calendar page, thinking "another month, and there's still NO PROGRESS, we're still at square one..." At least it's not a leap year this year, one day less. Small mercies.

Just like the other carefully timed drip of "on 22nd Feb, we MIGHT tell you what MIGHT be eased..."

Fuckinlonely · 31/01/2021 17:52

They said we were in lockdown for 3 weeks so they could build a hospital. They will say whatever comes to mind first. If you have people willing to see you, just go and see them x

Why would people not wish to be near uou?

Op, I think it will be normal but holidays in the Uk, not abroad.

wanderings · 31/01/2021 17:58

You’re right @Fuckinlonely. See also:
We can turn this virus around in twelve weeks.
Normal by September.
Normalish by Christmas.
It would be inhumane to cancel Christmas.
Significant normality by Easter.

Why should we believe anything Saint Boris and his band of merry liars says, ever?

Fuckinlonely · 31/01/2021 18:04

People are starting to see through the lies I hope. Not the whole country has been brainwashed, there are still some sane ones left who dont think only coronavirus deaths are tragic.

Lemons1571 · 31/01/2021 18:11

The cynic in me thinks he wants everyone to book Uk holidays and have a spend up here.

I’m sticking to my France reservation.

LightTree · 31/01/2021 18:16

It's disappointing to see Matt Hancock indicate that the government are planning to open up too soon. Yet again.

Independent SAGE have been very clear that full lockdown must stay in place until COVID has been eliminated- I.e. there are no cases. In order to keep people safe and protect our NHS.

We're going to end up with tens of thousands more avoidable deaths because the far-right tories are more interested in 'getting back to normal' which really means allowing their rich mates to make money at the expense of lives.

We all need to stay at home until COVID has been eradicated. If that takes another 18 months, so be it.

catatemymind · 31/01/2021 18:18

LightTree...realistic. Hmm

mum2jakie · 31/01/2021 18:22

@LightTree stop at home for another 18 months??!!! Fuck that!!!!! I'd rather get bloody Covid

How can that possibly happen?

What will happen to people's jobs?
Kids education?
People's mental health?

Covid will not go away. The sooner we all accept this and learn to live with it the better.

Londontown12 · 31/01/2021 18:29

Flu hasn’t been eradicated lol 😂
And covid won’t be either it’s something we have to live with and when everyone has been vaccinated then the pressure on Nhs wont matter so much .
And it all depends on how good this vaccine is at keeping people from dying

Of course full lockdown can't stay in place until COVID is eliminated. What a ridiculous thought. Your comment about making rich people richer is frankly insulting to those of us who whose small businesses have been completely destroyed. There is a balance to be struck. The government is not trying to save every life; death is part of life. They are trying to stop the nhs being overwhelmed.

rosie1959 · 31/01/2021 18:38

LightTree Covid will probably never be eliminated
We cannot keep the country in hibernation for another 18 months How on earth do you think all the closed businesses will survive Nothing to do with the Tories rich mates they already have enough to survive.

Sage hasn’t remotely stated that.

Are you ok? Because this post is not just totally and utterly inaccurate it’s also a bit disturbing in terms of your thought processes.

Don't be ridiculous. It's a virus, it won't be eradicated. We have to learn to live with it and not by locking down all the time.

Feel free to live as though you're in lockdown, just don't expect the rest of us to.

CeeJay81 · 31/01/2021 18:47

If it's like last summer I'll be happy🙂. I didnt take advantage of it when we relaxed restrictions last year, was still nervous doing much due to having to use public transport. This summer we hope to visit my dad(should be vaccinated before then) and 92 year old gran in Scotland. Will be happy doing lots of outdoor activities there though. Don't need indoor attractions open.

Matteblack · 31/01/2021 18:52

I can't take another 18 months of this. My mental health will fold.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 31/01/2021 18:57

I think it will be too. I've got a holiday planned, with friends, in Cornwall (but at our own place, so don't have to worry about cancellation or whatever), and have booked a Eurotunnel ticket for the first week of the school holidays. I might lose that money, as they are non refundable, but I don't care. I needed the 'France at the end of the tunnel' feeling. We've also booked skiing for next Christmas. But that's refundable.

JazzyGeoff · 31/01/2021 19:00

I wouldn't have full confidence that Matt Hancock could find his arse with both hands, so I'll wait and see for a bit longer I think.
