Says Matt Hancock.
Personally, I am optimistic. I am struggling without my DP hugely. Have not seen him since Christmas as we live apart and with our adult kids. Normally we would be going to gigs, restaurants and holidays so I'm so pleased an end is in sight when I can stay at his and we can carry on as we did pre coronavirus times.

Thousand milling around the beaches. Yes, that would work.

UK is small, and not enough room for everyone.

Oysterbabe · 31/01/2021 19:04

I've booked a (UK) holiday for June half term 🤞 I can get a refund if Covid scuppers it. I really, really hope it doesn't, we all need it.

rosesinmygarden · 31/01/2021 19:12

I booked a week at center Parcs this morning. They guarantee money back if covid means you have to cancel or even just change your mind.
I needed something to look forward to!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/01/2021 19:15

@JazzyGeoff

I wouldn't have full confidence that Matt Hancock could find his arse with both hands, so I'll wait and see for a bit longer I think.
I don't know, he's usually such a doom sayer if he's saying things will get better I think they might.
Doomsdayiscoming · 31/01/2021 19:34

It will be back to normal. Probably big events are a non-starter, but that’s more cos they take a long time, money, and effort to plan, so it’s too risky.

I’ve been pessimistic and mostly correct in my predictions thus far. But sunshine + a lot of people having some sort of immunity + a lot of people vaccinated = as good as it will get. People will still die, but it will be low.

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2021 19:39

@LightTree Independent SAGE are a bunch of experts who are pissed off they are not part of SAGE, they generally take what SAGE proper say and make it more extreme for media coverage, when this doesn't work they pop up and say something controversial, again for media coverage.

The Government should and probably does listen to SAGE proper - they couldn't care less what "Indy" SAGE say.

wanderings · 31/01/2021 19:43

Reminder: life has a 100% mortality rate.

At the moment we are being kept alive for an extremely miserable existence. The fight back will start. It has to. People will not put up with this shit show and government brainwashing for much longer.

Rollergirl11 · 31/01/2021 19:49

I’ve booked a UK holiday in Devon today too. I’ve been thinking about it all week but was spurred on by the Travel section in The Sunday Times today predicting that all UK holiday accommodation will be fully booked come Easter.

Hmm. I’m not a fan of the govt, but they haven’t really had much choice. 40k people in hospital wasn’t exactly manageable.

Once we are sitting at sub 25k in hospital and steadily falling, and cases are are 2-3% positivity rate, then the relaxation can start. I’d say we are 3-4 weeks away from that, on current trends.

frozendaisy · 31/01/2021 19:56

Don't think anyone should get their hopes up too much for "great and free this summer".

PinkFondantFancy · 31/01/2021 21:53

Even the phrase makes my teeth itch. I'm so sick of being patronised by this government. I really hope the fightback starts soon, the rest of Europe is starting to wake up

southeastdweller · 31/01/2021 22:45

Dear Matt Hancock, tell that to the millions of people whose lives have been screwed over, in many cases destroyed, because of these lockdowns you and your cronies implemented.

How the hell will be it a great summer? Social distancing will still be in place, and we'll probably have to still wear masks in shops, restrictions on air travel, gigs like they used to be won't be happening and many bars and restaurants will be out of business by then. I expect it will be a summer much like last year's.

LizFlowers · 01/02/2021 00:20

Seems hopeful - if it works out that way.

Kokeshi123 · 01/02/2021 01:58

Independent SAGE have been very clear that full lockdown must stay in place until COVID has been eliminated- I.e. there are no cases. In order to keep people safe and protect our NHS.

Erm, vaccination of kids may not even START till 2022. How are you going to pay for your precious NHS if the country goes bankrupt?

What about the hundred thousands family mourning for their loved ones who have passed away?

Life doesn't always just "go on" and I'm pretty sure if you're mother died because of covid and there was never any national lockdowns put in place you would blame the government for not doing enough prevention.

Inkpaperstars · 01/02/2021 03:29

I hope we do, but whether we do or not I wish the govt would stop saying things like this because some people take it as a pledge rather than a hope and it just fuels their disillusionment if it can’t happen. Let’s hope it does and enjoy it if it does but not have govt promising things.

WanderingFruitWonderer · 01/02/2021 03:45

Summer is surely bound to be normal ish? The Covid-vulnerable people will almost all have been vaccinated by then, and the hot weather will keep the virus at bay. Also, vitamin D levels will be naturally higher due to sun, so most people will be better protected that way.
I honestly think this current time will seem very dream-like and distant. Lockdown #1 feels like that to me now, very abstract, and so will this one, I'm sure.
I have to say that I do think the current lockdown was essential & unavoidable at its beginning, for the NHS. But, I don't want it to continue longer than is absolutely necessary. I presume most people feel the same...

inquietant · 01/02/2021 04:01

The one thing politicians can't say is the truth - they don't know how things will be by summer.

Vaccination is going well in the UK. That should seriously reduce hospitalisations by summer.

Beyond that, they can't know what will happen next.

yaboo · 01/02/2021 04:45

I believe we're going to have a decent summer. It'll still be a bit queue-y, and you'll still probably see masks and sanitizers everywhere, but we'll make do, won't we?

PhilCornwall1 · 01/02/2021 05:04

Says Matt Hancock.

Oh fucking he'll is the Head Boy at it again, "ordering" us to do something, like in lockdown 1.0.

Incyra · 01/02/2021 06:42

Matt Hancock has a holiday booked to Cornwall, in the summer holidays, he said it on one of the government briefings the other day!

IncidentsandAccidents · 01/02/2021 07:49

I think it will be a good summer. There may be some restrictions but we'll be able to go on UK holidays, eat out, go to the pub, visit tourist attractions and see friends and family indoors and outdoors (though probably with limits to numbers). I would certainly take that!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 01/02/2021 07:53

@Fuckinlonely

They said we were in lockdown for 3 weeks so they could build a hospital. They will say whatever comes to mind first. If you have people willing to see you, just go and see them x
The things you say, repeatedly, might explain why you're lonely.

Covid deniers are a huge part of the problem.
