I didn't know about the 300,000 Chinese that is wonderful ❤️❤️

Not to the Brexit voting community I work with, who thought that leaving the EU would mean that the local British Pakistani population would be 'sent back to where they came from'
@CarolEffingBaskin

Absolutely agree. I’ve lost friends due to my decision to vote Leave, called racist and xenophobic (ignoring the fact that my job is immigration lawyer so I have literally dedicated my career to helping people move to the U.K.).. My reasons were always due to excessive bureaucracy and the unaccountability of the Commission. I do not want to see any more deaths from this terrible disease for any country, but it’s nice to have my husband finally say to me ‘maybe you did have a point about the EU’.
I voted remain then started a degree in law, if I knew then what I know now I would have voted to leave.

Honestly, EU is really truly bureaucratic with very little democracy.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 29/01/2021 20:51

It's not a hard border. Soldiers and checkpoints and barbed wire across roads is a hard border.

ZooKeeper19 · 29/01/2021 20:52

OK so let me get this straight.

 1. UK says UK comes first in AZ vaccine so they will not provide EU with what they promised.
 1. EU says "ok, but we keep Pfizer vaccine for EU then"
 1. UK says "cool, NI is still in EU, we will use NI as backdoor to get what WE want"
 1. EU says "nah bro, sorry, YOUR deal that YOU drafted and YOU presented as YOUR massive win says we can stop that kind of BS and we are stopping that now"
 1. UK cries "about the EU being aggressive, shameful" and what not because....

Anyone else finds this hilarious? UK wanted Brexit, they knew what they voted for, they wanted to control their borders so there. Go. Enjoy.

That is not correct. A hard border is one with immigration and custom controls. Which the EU has effectively imposed on Ireland, without consulting either the British or the Irish governments.

But you're fine with that so long as you get your jab?

I did my law degree before the referendum and it’s exactly why I voted leave.

I just ignored the ‘leave voters are thick’ comments.

The EU has done the impossible and unified all parties in Ireland

All parties in Ireland ? or all parties on the Island that is Ireland and Northern Ireland ? If it has unified all parties across the board then its achieved more in a couple of days than has been achieved over many decades.

IcedPurple · 29/01/2021 20:54

UK says UK comes first in AZ vaccine so they will not provide EU with what they promised.

What the hell are you talking about?

The EU's vaccine supply issues are a matter between them and AZ. Britain has nothing to do with it.

Well yes, pretty much everyone in Ireland - and indeed all rational people everywhere - agree that this has been a dangerous and reckless move by the EU.

redsquirrelfan · 29/01/2021 20:56

It is totally astonishing that they would go to such lengths to prevent the Pfizer vaccine getting into GB via the back door. And without consulting with the Irish government. I am at a loss as to how they think that the UK government is responsible in any way for a contract they made with a commercial entity.

I think the UK government is being very sensible, staying quiet, other than a brief Gove statement to say he was concerned about the Art 16 situation.

Do we have enough Pfizer vaccines to do the second doses for everyone who has had one so far?

I do wish you'd all stop going on about the Germans though. This isn't about Germany, it's about some moronic officials in the Commission.

EU member states can do their own thing, Hungary for example has bought the Russian vaccine/been involved in trials for it.

Exactly, just what we voted for...what a future....this with every decision. Fisherman not happy either.

Zoo keeper, no, quite a few threads on the legal sides of this, really helpful in trying to understand what's gone on.

But U.K. hasn’t said U.K. comes first. The U.K. signed a deal with AZ very early on, AZ said it will honour the agreements of those who signed first - which is usually the case in an event of a backlog of any type of product.
FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 29/01/2021 20:57

It's one product that is already available.

We can't get batteries and loads of other stuff posted here from GB, that makes more impact on my life than this.

I think than England made this mess mostly and we're having to put up with the shit show they created so I don't have much sympathy for their government not being able to bring vaccines in by using us as a back door.

 1. No - UK has a separate and unrelated contract, and there is no connection to contracts that AZ makes with other parties
 1. That wouid be unfortunate - one hopes that Pfizer will honour its contacts
 1. ??
 1. ?? But agree that appear to be having a tantrum and trying to draw the UK government in to their contract with AZ (something UK has nothing to do with)
 1. UK government has said very little, and what has been said is measured and non-confrontational - linked above
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 29/01/2021 20:58

Captain Marvel and reformedcharacters, if a cousin who is a lawyer and who voted leave, based on what she learned while doing her degree.

Claiming first dibs on a product because it is made in your territory despite preexisting orders elsewhere.

What is that?

Erm no. It's nothing like that.

EU ordered lots of Sanofi vaccines. Sanofi vaccine doesn't work.

Most manufacturers are having supply issues, including Pfizer and AZ. AZ tells EU they will have to wait for a lot of doses. EU gets panicky because of aforementioned Pfizer shortages and lack of Sanofi vaccine even though it hasn't even approved AZ vaccine yet.

EU doesn't like fact that UK is doing vaccines fast and efficiently (only thing this government has got right) and throws a hissy fit and decides it's the UK's fault and will block Pfizer vaccine supplies to it. Then it thinks of NI and decides GB will nick vaccines from NI.

Oh dear oh dear.

EU law is also torturously boring. It’s the one thing that makes me regret choosing law to study.
Theunamedcat · 29/01/2021 21:00

I voted remain feeling we were better off as a large group but without the moderate capabilities of the British they have gone collectively crazy (other countries claimed that the British were a calming influence in Europe although im not sure how)

Your post makes little sense, especially as you seem unaware that 'England's' supply of vaccines greatly outstrips that of the EU. Hence the hissy fit, using NI as a pawn.

I can’t imagine Joe Biden is going to be very impressed either. Interesting to see how/if the US weighs in

Err...why is his opinion specifically relevant? He has enough problems to tacklet at home

Well number 1 didn’t happen. The UK have not involved themselves. This is between the EU and AstraZeneca. You seem quite muddled.
