If you / anyone you know has had covid, where did they catch it?

I've been meaning to post this a while. I don't personally know many people who've had covid, though my number has increased a lot in the last week.

Of the people I know, one caught it off his husband who is a hospital nurse, one caught it off her boyfriend who caught it 'out and about', and one (2yr old) caught it off her dad on a contact visit. The rest have no idea.

Who does know where they caught it?

No real reason for asking, not a journalist, just interested.

Caught it just before Christmas from my eldest son. He caught it at school (we know this because he literally hadnt been anywhere else).

Ickle37 · 05/01/2021 20:46

I caught it in the first wave. I dont go out, didnt use public transport and the person i caught it off i never went within 3 metres of. We discovered everyone in the office who got it were tea drinkers so we suspect from touching the milk. Though we religiously used hand sanitiser. This is why i thought social distancing was nonsense. If you dont want covid- stay away from people and if you dont want to give it to people, stay away from those people. No bubble , or sitting two metres away from anyone will work. Dont go near people, then you wont get it. Interestingly my 2 now 3 yr old has had three contacts with full on cases and never got it. I firmly believe early years are safe.

11 people I know, all work in my school!

Newjobnewslob · 05/01/2021 23:00

That's really interesting Ickle, good thing I've been nowhere near an office for months.

Stories like that are why I posted the thread I realise now, really good to hear these pieces of the puzzle

I don't know 🤷‍♀️ I think it came from my daughter at school. She had a mild cold, or so it seemed. I haven't really been anywhere other than the park and a couple of shops.

Blueskysunsout · 05/01/2021 23:04

One person is a postman
One person is a delivery driver -

(Hermes/dpd/yodel type)
One person works on a production line in manufacturing.
Another is a teaching assistant
Another is a mum and son (son got it at school)

Everyone I know or know of, who's had it caught it where you would expect.

In February/March in crowded places, even if it's hard to say which, they had been to meetings, theatres, bars, cafes, etc. Or skiing in the Alps.

Since then from teenagers or adult children who had come home from university feeling unwell or who had been to parties, including illicit ones. Or in hospital - the most common.

Northernsoullover · 05/01/2021 23:05

Work. My partner got it from a colleague. My friends daughter brought it home from work and gifted it to the family.
I have never understood the 'take your mask off when at your desk rule' its in the air! 3 people at my workplace all got it who sit in a straight line but 2m apart. Its strict and now you can't sit down unless you have booked a desk (which is then deep cleaned) but you can still take your bloody mask off!

Seasaltyhair · 05/01/2021 23:05

Aunty and uncle from the shops.

lightand · 05/01/2021 23:06

A scaled back small wedding/church, back in March. With singing.
Had a little do in a not well ventilated small room afterwards.
Now know of course, that that is pretty much a no no nowadays. The 4 that got it were the eldest 4. Again, no surprise much, now.

LawnFever · 05/01/2021 23:07

My MIL got it, we think at the hospital (she’d not been anywhere else) and passed it on to BIL, SIL & DH - I’ve somehow not got it, but isolating anyway cos DH has

Yes a few. Colleague caught it right back in feb on holiday in Italy. Was really quite unwell. Age group 50's. Is fine now.

Friend who is front line health worker in a hospital. 40's. But feeble for a few days but was over it less than a week.

Another hcp tested positive but a symptomatic.

GPS of a friend. Approached the doc with some abdominal pains - given a routine test before hospital exam - tested positive but no further symptoms. No idea where they actually caught it don't think they know either as not an hcp. Their spouse got it with classic symptoms and was quite unwell. Whole family tested inc young children. No other positive tests.

None above have been unwell enough to need hospital.

Outnumberedwoman · 05/01/2021 23:14

A TA in a school caught it. It has run through the school.

Pinkyxx · 05/01/2021 23:17

My child, in school.

joystir59 · 05/01/2021 23:17

Nephew and his partner both caught it at work (paramedics) ex husband caught it at work ( nurse) son caught it off ex husband. Friend caught it off her daughter who visited for Christmas, from London, against the rules.

Kat2000 · 05/01/2021 23:19

My daughter from her work colleague who was coughing, at work in a nursery, and didn’t cover her mouth and then the nursery had to shut because other staff got it.
My other daughter’s best friend again at work, a football club, with someone coughing again. Luckily both had very mild symptoms and recovered.

Onlinedilema · 05/01/2021 23:20

I know someone who caught it from her dh, he is a nurse. Someone who caught it from the person they bought their car from ( a garage owner). They then passed it to their husband. Someone else caught it in hospital. Another person from their teenage child.

CarinaMarina · 05/01/2021 23:24

No idea. The only places I'd been were the supermarket and the hairdresser, so I assume one of those. I was horribly ill for 10 days, narrowly swerved hospital but I'm fine now. Slight tickly cough 8 weeks on.

Tinty · 05/01/2021 23:26

One from hospital, one health visitor from a patient. Two from supermarkets and one from workplace. Two from babies nursery. All fine nothing more than a cold, all between 40 - 60 years old.

ddl1 · 05/01/2021 23:26

Of those I know who've had it:

Confirmed cases:

3 are healthcare professionals who presumably caught from being around hospitals

1 caught it in hospital as a patient for something else

2 are university students, and probably caught it at uni

One is a secondary school pupil and caught it at school

Presumed/possible cases:

One had an illness in March with all the symptoms of Covid. She was not hospitalized though it was touch and go at one point whether she would be; and at that time you only got tested if you were in hospital, so we'll never know whether she truly had it, but probably. We don't know where she got it - at that time people weren't taking the same precautions as a bit later on.

One university student was quite unwell for several weeks, with all the symptoms of Covid including loss of taste/smell. She had a negative test, though; so maybe it was a false negative, or maybe she just had flu or something.

None of the people whom I know who had it was in a very clinically vulnerable category, with the exception of the hospital patient (though she was only in hospital for a fairly routine operation, but she has several 'pre-existing conditions'). She only had a relatively mild flu-like illness from Covid, though. None of the people I know had really life-threatening illness. The most severely affected was the least vulnerable on paper: the 15-year-old secondary school pupil, with no known pre-existing conditions, who is still suffering badly from long Covid three months later.

School

AdoraBell · 05/01/2021 23:29

Friend, her boyfriend’s daughter. She works front line. Young and healthy so got everything crossed for her.

MaggieFS · 05/01/2021 23:30

Elderly relative caught it in hospital. Admitted for something unrelated and tested negative on admission. He passed away from it without his family being able to see him.

Jenasaurus · 05/01/2021 23:30

A neighbour caught it from her DD who caught it from a nursery worker. .
