That’s that then. DH’s shops can’t survive this again. My nursing work (agency) in schools is cancelled. No income, no way through this.... Fuck. (And I never swear in real life, just needed to get it out.)

I understood why Macron shut the border, if I lived in France I would have approved!

HibernatingTill2030 · 04/01/2021 22:14

Being in or out of the EU wouldn't have mattered re: borders. We, and every other EU state, had the power to close our own borders to the rest of the EU in exceptional circumstances.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 04/01/2021 22:17

Fine, but at least you are consistent.

Comfortzone · 04/01/2021 22:17

So sorry OP
Just an idea - easy to set up
www.shopify.co.uk for online commerce for your DH, if relevant.

umpteennamechanges · 04/01/2021 22:20
@Canwecancel2020 I really wish there were... but I’m mental health so, although I’m more than capable, others are better qualified. Plus I’m only agency (NHS was impossible with 4dc and a DH who works/ worked long hours) so not likely to be used... they seem to be redeploying existing/ retired staff. I’ve looked into it though, so maybe if they’re desperate enough?
OP - they are recruiting vaccinators in a lot of areas and I'm pretty sure you'll meet the criteria.

This link is for Basingstoke (as an example).

Have a look on Indeed

umpteennamechanges · 04/01/2021 22:20

It's not great pay, but better than nothing...

GretaGip · 04/01/2021 22:24

So sorry about this, @Howmanysleepsnow. Thanks

Does your DH business operate online? Could you link?

peasoup8 · 04/01/2021 22:29

@inquietant you just don’t get it do you? My family is facing financial ruin tonight thanks to this lockdown. Years of hard work have been poured down the drain. Lockdowns don’t work - we locked down in November and look at where we are now. Isn’t the definition of stupid continuing to do the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome?

Anyway, people like my family and my DC don’t matter a jot in this fucking shitstorm. I don’t know why I’m even bothering to reply to be honest.

midgebabe · 04/01/2021 22:30

Lockdowns do work , they have prevented NHS and society collapse, we are crap at exiting them
They are like chemo, necessary but awful

umpteennamechanges · 04/01/2021 22:33

Sorry OP, have just seen that you've already seen it.

We too are in the same situation. Facing bankruptcy any day now really.

I worked so hard to buy the house we live in and make it nice.

It will probably mean we don't get to have a family either. I'm 39 this year, we were supposed to TTC last year. Now I can't see us being financially able to start a family while I'm still able to.

All that being said. I still support lockdowns.

Letting the virus run rampant would result in just as much economic pain but with a lot more dead people and from all kinds of things as the hospitals become overwhelmed. I suspect we may have a sneak peek of what that might look like in some areas in 7-10 days (let's hope not).

Good analogy.

They're fucking horrible...it has all kinds of impact beyond what it's main aim is but the alternative is even worse.

CherryPieface · 04/01/2021 22:37

Maybe look at universities - they are massively increasing mental health support for their students.

barbites · 04/01/2021 22:41

@Howmanysleepsnow from one mental health nurse to another Thanks
You may find some vaccination work or how about nursing homes? Expect that's already been said. Sorry you're in this situation x

PurpleMustang · 04/01/2021 22:42

If nights did suit you, though imagine would be tough with kids home during the day, I have heard they are vaccinating through the night. Someone got a 2am appointment. If you could do student testing when the kids go back heard that is £65 a day

PurpleMustang · 04/01/2021 22:44

If you felt comfy too, mention the general area you live and someone may have an idea to help

Cheerios444 · 04/01/2021 22:49

I'm so so sorry OP, it sounds extremely tough Flowers

Motnight · 04/01/2021 22:51

I'm so sorry Op that you and your family are in this position.

alex1889 · 04/01/2021 23:04

No they aren't.

Countries in Asia haven't locked down. They've invested in rigorous track and trace. NZ didn't lockdown, they closed borders.

Lockdowns are the only option for us because our gov haven't made any sensible decisions since this started. Today is a classic example of yet another u-turn

Pyewhacket · 04/01/2021 23:15

Plenty of Bank available in NHS . We’re desperate for additional qualified staff.

Howmanysleepsnow · 05/01/2021 00:02

@PurpleMustang nights are hard when the dc are home in the day, but last lockdown I learnt I could parent pretty well on 2 hours sleep! Plus the dc were happy to snuggle up to me and watch tv for those 2 hours while I dozed (much happier than being without me if I work a 12 hour day shift).

OP posts:
Whammy · 05/01/2021 04:37

Countries in Asia have locked down. As did NZ, during March-May last year - and for the first four weeks it was a harsher lockdown than what the UK is about to undergo.

withaheyandahoandaheyheyho · 05/01/2021 04:51

Have you thought about helpline work for your local MH trust? They were crying out for people to do that in my area and it was done from home

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/01/2021 17:33

OP, could you do something like this from home?
Track and Trace Clinical Case Worker

Your DH might have to step up his parenting a bit, but if it means you can pay the bills then so be it.

IEat · 05/01/2021 17:45

I swear like a sailor
apply for unemployment benefits
Sign up to agency’s
You know some schools are open, agency staff will be used!
