Queen's speech

Did anyone else think the Queen was taking a subtle swipe at the government when she said life must go on?

She is an amazing woman. I dread the day she is no longer here. I predict the country will go to pieces.

EdithWeston · 25/12/2020 18:21

Wiki on the Queen's Christmas Broadcast - including links to many of them

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Christmas_Message

It says they're almost entirely written by the Queen herself. I don't think age affects eloquence, and indeed I would expect it brings the experience which improves the skilll

MarcelineMissouri · 25/12/2020 18:23

I think she’s just wonderful. I wish she was actually in charge of the country.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/12/2020 18:26

I don't remember that bit but I thought the whole speech was weird this year.

When did it switch to channel 4- usually the BBC init?

bearlyactive · 25/12/2020 18:31

I was impressed by the horses too, every horse I know would run a mile if someone started waving a stick around on their back, let alone playing a brass instrument!

MarshaBradyo · 25/12/2020 18:31

No

I agree with pp and thought it perfectly done

SMaCM · 25/12/2020 18:33

The channel 4 thing was a spoof I think. I didn't watch it thought.
Whiskas1Kittens · 25/12/2020 18:33

I liked the part about the unknown soldier. She was basically referring to all the nameless people working away. I listened to that and for obvious reasons.

Lynchpin2018 · 25/12/2020 18:37

I thought that was one of the best Queen’s speeches I’ve ever heard. I shed a few tears.

AlohaMolly · 25/12/2020 18:39

I didn’t watch and I’m no royalist but I secretly love the queen, even more so after binge watching the crown recently Grin

I’ve had too much prosecco and just reading this thread about the speech has made me well up. I’ll have to search for it in a bit.

megletthesecond · 25/12/2020 18:45

No.
Life is going on anyway. Just doing it differently until the virus numbers are lower and vaccination is higher.

megletthesecond · 25/12/2020 18:46

Did some of you watch her CH4 one and not realise what was up Wink?

I watched her BBC speech but must watch CH4 later.

Viviennemary · 25/12/2020 18:50

I thought it was very good. I liked the bit about lots of people going about helping others in a quiet way.

RememberSelfCompassion · 25/12/2020 18:58

I dont normally listen but was curious as to what she could possibly say.

I founs it quite emotional and very well done. She really was referencing all the unnamed people who have helped or cared or kept things going. The horses were amazing! And the nhs choir! So proud of the NHS.

I loved the reference to her zoom calls too.

Genuinely impressed and touched.

Pechanga · 25/12/2020 19:09

I thought she hit the right note completely, I shed a tear (although that may be all the gin I've consumed)

MarshaBradyo · 25/12/2020 19:10

I shed a tear too

I felt it hit exactly the right note.

Whatayear1234 · 25/12/2020 19:24

I thought her speech was excellent, especially when she was talking about people needing a hug when they couldn't have one and not being alone. For once I saw her as human and not just 'The Queen'.
I am a Christian so probably biased (as she talked about Jesus which I liked) but I really liked how she acknowledged all faiths and people. It was spot on.
The NHS choir were excellent too.
I really didn't read it as taking a swipe at the government.

SophieB100 · 25/12/2020 20:04

I shed a tear, and I don't cry easily and I'm not a royalist.
She hit the right note - it was touching and perfect.

MintyMabel · 25/12/2020 21:12

I loved the reference to her zoom calls too.

“Oh sorry, one was on mute” 😆

Utterlyshafted · 25/12/2020 21:55

Made me cry. Just perfect.

ofwarren · 25/12/2020 22:07

I'm no royalist either but also got a bit emotional.
Brilliant speech.

LiJo2015 · 25/12/2020 22:10

Who honestly cares?

WillowintheUK · 25/12/2020 22:19

Everybody who’s replied to the OP apart from you I think.

I thought it was lovely.

IHeartKingThistle · 25/12/2020 22:25

I've got it recorded to watch. Love the Queen.

My contribution to this thread is that I know someone who plays in the mounted band. He told me once that because they play out a lot and always finish with the National Anthem the horses now recognise the tune and when they get to the end of the National Anthem the horses just turn round and go home without needing to be told. I love that.

saffire · 25/12/2020 22:27

Brought a tear fo my eye.
