Queen's speech

Did anyone else think the Queen was taking a subtle swipe at the government when she said life must go on?

@IHeartKingThistle

I've got it recorded to watch. Love the Queen.

My contribution to this thread is that I know someone who plays in the mounted band. He told me once that because they play out a lot and always finish with the National Anthem the horses now recognise the tune and when they get to the end of the National Anthem the horses just turn round and go home without needing to be told. I love that.

And this is why I love MN.

Nothing happens on this planet without a MNer sharing the cherry from the top with us all.Grin

No googling for hours to find just the right music clip for one's presentation: one just commands one's musicians to assemble. On horses.Grin

I do like the phrase

"I am so proud and moved by this quiet, indomitable spirit"

as I like the contrast to paying attention to who is shouting the most online

RoseMartha · 25/12/2020 23:11

I thought it was an excellent speech

13lucky · 25/12/2020 23:22

Normally have no time for the Royal Family...but I was intrigued by what The Queen would say. My kids were being a bit annoying an talking over it a little...but have to say I was almost moved to tears even so. Thought it was spot on.

SebastianTheCrab · 26/12/2020 00:01

I never watch it but did this year. I also thought it was excellent.

FuckOffBorisYouTwat · 26/12/2020 00:06

I absolutely detest the concept of the royal family and all they stand for. However that speech was wonderful and summed up everything it could

ScouseQueen · 26/12/2020 00:07

While she always mentions her faith, and I know it is hugely important to her, I noticed that the presence of religion and faith broadly in the whole speech was much stronger this year. That's the context for me of the 'getting on with it' bits: you've got to keep going through this dark period and faith is what carries you through, with light then at the end of the tunnel - light as another prominent theme.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/12/2020 00:11

I don't usually watch it. But thought the tone was just right.

PhilCornwall1 · 26/12/2020 00:30

She never wastes a single word.

Nice that the photograph was just Prince Philip too.

IHateCoronavirus · 26/12/2020 05:32

I also though she was spot on. I’m not a royalist by any means but I have a lot of respect for the message she delivered and how she delivered it.

Nc135 · 26/12/2020 06:02

I loved how she started by acknowledging all religious events that had been distributed this year. I thought that was a very smart thing to do as the head of the Church of England and a Christian.

Nc135 · 26/12/2020 06:02

*disrupted not distributed !!!

Fifthtimelucky · 26/12/2020 06:27

I thought it was spot on too.

itispersonal · 26/12/2020 06:58

I thought it was spot on too.

The just wanting a hug or a hand hold, made me cry and I'd manage not too, all day, even when leaving my dm and ds after outdoor garden visit for us.

daisychain01 · 26/12/2020 07:24

I love her unashamed reference to the Christmas message, but also her acknowledgment of the other main world religions. Shows her as a modern global-thinking monarch - she's represented our country well for so long. I thought she looked amazing for 92, still bright as a button, but sombre in the current situation.

I also admired her being absolutely fluent and word perfect - she obviously spent a lot of time preparing!

KnowingMeKnowingYule · 26/12/2020 07:37

@Lynchpin2018

I thought that was one of the best Queen’s speeches I’ve ever heard. I shed a few tears.
So did I.
ImAncient · 26/12/2020 07:42

Thought she pretty much nailed it. Spot on. Well done to her. Judged the mood perfectly.

TheClitterati · 26/12/2020 08:46

I enjoyed the Queens speech.

But ever since I can't stop wondering about who the Queen spent Christmas Day with. Presumably it should only be with Philip under the rules. No but trad family Christmas at Sandringham?

Does she still have full households of staff in T4 lockdown? A kitchen full of people cooking her dinner? Surely this isn't possible?

TheRuleofStix · 26/12/2020 08:55

@TheClitterati of course she does! You don’t think she’s suddenly cooking and cleaning for herself do you? All her staff have been there all along.

She hasn’t a clue what the rest of us are going through Hmm.

FiggyPuddingFiend · 26/12/2020 08:59

According to the news she was spending Christmas with just Prince Philip at Windsor where she has been living. She still has household staff in, it's their job - you are allowed to have people attending their place of work under the rules. I think the numbers have been reduced though to allow better social distancing.

EdithWeston · 26/12/2020 09:04

She has staff, some attending theit workplace normally, others who are in 'HMS Bubble' and have isolated as a protective measure.

I read an account of the Ch4 deepfake alternative speech. As well as the silliness, it was apparently a warning against misinformation, and talking about trust. Also not a bad message for this year.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/12/2020 09:05

I read that she has a special bubble household of a small number of extra dedicated staff who are willing to not see their families for the duration.

TheClitterati · 26/12/2020 09:06

Thank you for sharing this info. Hope my mind can move onto something else now. You know when it gets stuck on something ....

BalloonSlayer · 26/12/2020 09:13

I loved it and I particularly liked the bit when she described seeing the Diwali fireworks going off in Windsor. I don't know why it moved me, I think it's because it made her seem like anyone else stuck in the house and going "ooh! Fireworks!" even though the house she is stuck in is a sodding great castle.
