That sounds good @GrumpySausage can you tell me which thread? I may have a nose.

FuzzyPuffling · 21/12/2020 11:14

I bet our mutant virus is everywhere (or a similar one) ...it's just that we've been the first to find it.

OP posts:
GrumpySausage · 21/12/2020 11:21

@chri55ie it was on the Oxford Vaccine thread.

feelingverylazytoday · 21/12/2020 11:22

Typical that it's the UK with the bloody mutant strain
It's already been detected in Denmark, Holland, and one case in both Italy and Australia. I've heard that some people think it might be responsible for the current rapid growth in California as well.

chri55ie · 21/12/2020 11:25

There is no way we are the only country that have it right now...just the first to detect it.

Thanks @GrumpySausage I’m a bit scared to go on that thread!

GrumpySausage · 21/12/2020 11:28

Yes @chri55ie it's a bit daunting, but that comment is near the bottom so maybe start from there! 😁

cathyandclare · 21/12/2020 11:34

That's great to see about the students. Thanks for sharing. I'm another stressed out one, got up to work at 3.45 am and just back from queuing in the rain for my Xmas shop. It feels like bedtime Grin

Student DD's housemate tested positive and track and trace were so useless they told them they only had to isolate until the Monday BEFORE the girl developed symptoms! They all did the right thing though.

I'm off to search for nuggets of joy!

mrshonda · 21/12/2020 11:35

Today is when the year turns, and we will have more light each day now. Something to be glad for. x

Spiratedaway · 21/12/2020 11:37

@webetotallyscrewed

but are the vaccines going to work now with this mutant version??
I had to change my user name :-) but this is what I was worried about Can it not be tweaked for the new strain ?
cathyandclare · 21/12/2020 11:41

Most experts have said that they expect the vaccines to still work. I think the Germans have confirmed that. It's also been reported that they can tweak existing vaccines for future mutations (like with the flu jab) without having to restart clinical trials.

In other news, research in Singapore (in the Lancet) confirms that spread is less likely when contacts are asymptomatic.

When adjusted for age, gender, and serology of index case, the incidence of COVID-19 among close contacts of a symptomatic index case was 3·85 times higher than for close contacts of an asymptomatic index case. Our findings suggest that people with asymptomatic COVID-19 are infectious but might be less infectious than symptomatic cases

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/12/2020 11:43

Cathyandclare, that will be excellent news in terms of vaccines lessening spread, no?

GrumpySausage · 21/12/2020 11:44

@mrshonda I'm taking that to heart today and viewing it as a sign. Flowers
