Greenwich schools closing tomorrow

Leader of Greenwich council tweeted an open letter this afternoon asking schools to close from Tuesday. Our school is complying.
I need a meltdown emoji. Work is stupid f*king busy this week for me and DP and I cannot do it with 4 & 7 year old at home

I live in Bromley and my goodness, people can be very stubborn about being part of London or not.

Especially the ones who lived her prior the creation of Greater London or the children of these families. Even our phone numbers are split.

But for the couple of weeks where Kent was already in Tier 3 most people suddenly loved being in London as they could go out for dinner.

Sorry to have started this derailment re Kent being near Greenwich. Until yesterday, I thought Kent was South West of London - bordering on Devon and Cornwall

I would tend to differentiate between London, London and somewhere that I'd class to be in Greater London.

Interestingly, I remember reading a period novel a few years ago and was fascinated to read that the main characters had a 'country' house, outside London - all the way out in ............Richmond. They would ride out there in carriages for a period to get out of the city...

I'm in what I would deem suburbia. I don't deem suburbia not to be London proper. It certainly feels like I'm in Outer Mongolia at times as it's a 20 min bus journey to nearest tube station. I border on another county. It is very much Range Rover territory here - not really what you'd associate with London's well connected public transport system.

I suppose there are a lot of places that I'd consider sort of satellite towns of London City - albeit I know that they're in the County of Greater London. I would have considered Greenwich to be London City though.

@YikesMusthaveusername But what is "London Proper" for you? In all these type of threads it always comes down to how people "feel" and vague notions of "postal towns and counties" and transport facilities....

@reluctantbrit Same in SW London, you get the die hards who insist they live in "Surrey" when they are in LB Richmond.

I suppose when Kent is cut off from the rest of the UK by Brexit it’ll all be moot anyway.

I think what’s London and what’s not is sort of irrelevant now given how large the commuter belt is as people try to find affordable housing (although I still couldn’t buy in any of the county’s gone up!).

Had cross rail been up and running I’m pretty sure the west would have gone up as well.

I will then insist that the post code is the only way to determine if I live in London or Kent and will ask for citizenship of the free Kent state

My borough has now backtracked on their closure.

Doesn't make much odds to me but I feel so sorry for the teachers and SLT's who have to work within these parameters. They are undermined at every turn.

Is Bromley London or Kent?? Dn lives there and isolating due to close contact with a child who has tested positive.

Bromley is Greater London

I have had many a discussions about this today and am still sticking to my opinion - Bromley is not 'proper' London.

My London is what is known to us all as Inner London.

Outer London boroughs are those which surround London forming a ring around inner London and were added on as people mentioned in 1965. Bromley fits here.

Bromley acted as a stooge for central government in the early 80s and caused London transport fares to be massivley raised on the argument that they have no benefit from the tube.

Which side of the river are you on because if the south side my husband's family will tell you you're not a proper Londoner.
