He’s telling me that as it’s a new cough he shouldn’t be going to school tomorrow.

Do I keep him off?
Do I get him tested?

I have read all the paraphernalia but his only symptom is a sore throat and a bit of a cough. Definitely not continuous.

Any advice?
He’s giving me the teenager stare 🙄🙄🙄

I would see how it goes overnight, but if he’s still coughing tomorrow I’d keep him off. It’s not worth the risk.

ssd · 11/10/2020 17:38

Dh had a bit of a cough, he swore it wasn't symptoms, only went for a test as 'I made him'... He was positive.

Keep him off school and get him tested.

ssd · 11/10/2020 17:39

Dhs cough wasn't continuous. But it was enough to warrant a test, even though he said it wasn't.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 11/10/2020 17:40

The school will probably send him home and then you/he will be vilified by his friends/their parents if it turns out to be positive. Just book a test.

LadyCatStark · 11/10/2020 17:40

What makes you think it isn’t Covid though? Your teenager is right I’m afraid!

WhoseThatGirl · 11/10/2020 17:43

DD has a sore throat and a bit of a cough. She was positive. Get him tested, why wouldn’t you?

Tootsey11 · 11/10/2020 17:44

I had no cough and a slight sore throat at the start. I had CV. Get him tested.

ClashCityRocker · 11/10/2020 17:45

Continuous is I think defined as more than three coughing fits in a 24 hour period, or coughing a lot for more than an hour.

I would imagine it would be tricky to have a noticiable cough that doesn't fall into that category, tbh.

I think off and tested.

Whatshouldicallme · 11/10/2020 17:45

A "continuous" cough is generally recognised as any cough that is not a one off (eg from a choking episode, inhaling some dust etc). If your son has "a bit of a cough," that sounds like more than an odd one off. He needs a test and definitely needs to stay off school.

My friend's very very mild and occasional cough turned out to be COVID.

MrsVeryTired · 11/10/2020 17:46

See how it goes, if he's still coughing in the morning he shouldn't be at school and needs a test.

bengalcat · 11/10/2020 17:46

Get him tested .

lunar1 · 11/10/2020 17:46

Get him tested, don't be the parent who doesn't bother.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/10/2020 17:46

He might be pushing it so he can skive but he's right, get him tested. But tomorrow he has to stay home, not go out and see his mates or pop to Maccies etc
In the house until it comes back negative

HelloDulling · 11/10/2020 17:47

School will likely send him home if he goes in coughing. Book a test and keep him home.

WillowSummerSloth · 11/10/2020 17:47

If it's a new cough and he's coughed more than 3 times in 24 hrs, he should be isolating, testing and not going out until he has a negative result. I'm a GP and have no way of telling what is and isn't a covid cough yet am assured daily that what someone has is definitely not a covid cough....

IwishIwasyoda · 11/10/2020 17:48

Seriously? You need to test.

NormandySR1 · 11/10/2020 17:51

I'd get him a test. We've ordered one for ds, he coughed Friday morning, just the once and I honestly thought it was just his asthma as it tends to play up when the heating goes on and dust gets kicked about. Its now a continuous dry cough so isolation for us. Better to do one and it be negative, than not get one, be positive and potentially spread it.

WeLovePeaSoup · 11/10/2020 18:21

Does he have a snotty nose too?

AlexaShutUp · 11/10/2020 18:23

Thank goodness your son understands the guidance. He is right, he needs to stay at home and get tested.

OpheliasCrayon · 11/10/2020 18:52

I had covid and didn't cough at all in the day, and for about an hour solidly told every night but then nothing else for the next 24 hours. You need to get him tested. He will be sent home anyway so save yourself the drama.

eternalopt · 11/10/2020 18:54

Do you think there is something clinically wrong with his mental state?

tink09 · 11/10/2020 18:55

Keep him off and book a test. A 16 yr old at my school told me a similar story and his parent had said that it wasn’t Covid. We very quickly sent him home.

Tilly28 · 11/10/2020 18:56

Seriously!! Are people still asking these questions! If you have a cough you need a test and your whole household needs to isolate until the result comes back! So no one should be going to school or work tomorrow!

MarshaBradyo · 11/10/2020 18:57

If school will hear the cough and send him home then better off not to send him in

eternalopt · 11/10/2020 18:58

Omg - wrong thread sorry !! I was posting in the one about donal trump. Well - I thought I was!! I'm sure there's nothing wrong with your sons mental state!! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
